1. Piña Fabric- Dubbed as the Queen of Philippine textiles, piña fabric is often used in
making the country’s national costumes, i.e. barong and terno. Is largely produced in
Kalibo, Aklan, where communities of indigenous weavers still use traditional weaving
and dyeing techniques to this day. The time-honored tradition was nominated by the
National Commission for Culture and the Arts to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural
Heritage Lists in 2018. Piña cloth is prized locally and internationally for its luxurious
sheerness and durability. It comes in different varieties such as piña seda (woven with
silk) and piña jusi (woven with abaca). Piña silk is popular among the Philippine elite
as well as high fashion producers in North America and Europe.
2. Abaca- Earlier Visayan textiles were traditionally made from hemp materials. This
comes from the abaca plant, also known as Manila hemp. It is a wild banana species
that doesn’t bear edible fruit but produces a strong fiber.Abaca cloth is produced in
many regions in the Philippines. But the T’boli tribe of Southern Mindanao is most
popular for their artistry and special hand-woven abaca fabric called Nalak.
3. Jusi- is the lovechild of abaca and piña fibers. Still sheer but made with a stronger and
tighter weave. When woven along with locally grown silk threads, cotton, and rayon,
jusi fibers make the iconic Hablon textile. Hablon is the fast-rising star of Philippine
textiles. It is currently making waves in local and international haute couture. Though,
traditionally, it is used for products such as the colorful, checkered patadyong skirt and
bandanas.
1. The “Bagay” movement. It is the kind of poetry which uses colloquial language and
is built on concrete images which tend to describe experiences. Poets Jose F. Lacaba,
Rolando Tino, Bienvinido Lumbera, Antonio Samson, and Edmundo Martinez started
the Bagay Movement. An example of Bagay Poetry is the Valediction sa Hillcrest
written by Rolando Tinio, which employs Taglish. Later on, national consciousness
was inserted into bagay poetry
2. Amado V. Hernandez introduced another form of poetry through his work “Ang
Bayang Malaya”. It is a long narrative piece about a peasant leader. Oppression and
fighting for human rights are the main themes of the said piece.
3. The ambahan is a literary product and poetic expression of the Southern Mangyans
of Mindoro, Philippines. Although there are about seven different ethnic groups living
in Mindoro, collectively called the Mangyans, these groups are quite distinct from each
other as to language, customs, and way of living.

aiming to analyze the Philippine writings. Informal essay, on the other hand, also took
the scene which was developed by women writers. The Contemporary Philippine

innovative techniques of writers.
Philippine Cinema
• The film became popular in 1912 when foreigners Edward Gross and Harry Brown
produced a film about the life of Dr. Jose Rizal. This started filmmaking in the country.
The first Filipino, who produced a film and is also tagged as the “Father of Philippine
Movies” is Jose Nepomuceno. His work was entitled “Dalagang Bukid”.
• Philippine film during the early times was greatly influenced by Hollywood since the
local director set Hollywood movies as their model. However, the Filipino producers
still cannot level with quality of American movies due to outdated technology and
limited budget.
• Apart from the mainstream movie industry, there are also other filmmakers producing
alternative cinema or independent films. These filmmakers produced movies through
lightweight technologies. Their usual screening venues are schools, international film
festivals, and outreach programs. One of the known independent film director is Kidlat
Tahimik.
• In the contemporary period, Philippine film revolved around a variety of subjects and
themes like martyr wife, superhero, action, melodramas, comedies, etc. Among all the
art forms, the film has the largest audience.
• In the regional setting, through CCP’s Coordinating Center for Film, educational and
outreach programs which promote quality film and conducts film training courses has
been established.
