VISUAL QUALITY OF THE STREET - ANALYSIS

02. T HE MAIDAN WEST ASCENT Urban design - street and buildng intervention
THE MAIDAN WEST ASCENT - STREET DESIGN
The Mangalore smart city has proposed to shift the market in the near future. The users identified along the Maidan west street and the fish
market were the fish mongers, the pedestrians, the street vendors, the shop keepers, the customers, the bus commuters, the passerby and the auto
rickshaw drivers. The street faced problems such as narrow unshaded footpath, unorganized bus stops, no dedicated space for on street parking, no
shop spillover and street vendor space, as well as lack of barrier free access. The street did not have a landmark or an identity of its own. The fish market A
lacked a clear and recognizable entry point and was congested and dark. The requirement was to redesign the Maidan west street and design a EXISTING
LAND USE
temporary fish market and work around it for smooth functioning and an improved user experience of both the street and the fish market.

The Britto house is a 124 years old house which was to be
renovated and converted into a museum. Since the authorities did
not posses the original and existing plan of the house, myself and
6 classmates formed a group to volunteer to draft the same. We
utilized measuring tapes and lazers for documenting measure-
ments.

The Britto house was owned by the well-known prosperous

land lord, John Joseph Britto in the early 1900’s. The bungalow
came to the use of the St.Anthony’s Charity Institutes in 1935 and
the land was acquired in auction for Rs.45,000 as per records.

This age old structure is built in a typical old Goa model of

bungalows with lime mortar (Chunna) plastering, a combination
of red oxide flooring and managlore tile roofing.

The structure was originally symmetrical with a left and a right

wing. The kitchen and utility space were added later on which
were accessed through the backyard.

The portico which housed the horse carts used by the residents
was initially in level with the ground and was raised later in the
later stages . The bungalow has arched windows and doors with
intricate mouldings and unique system for airflow.
