Lesson 6

The document is a study guide about freehand sketching techniques. It discusses drawing lines, boxes, and shapes without instruments. It provides steps for sketching an isometric box including drawing construction lines first and then highlighting the object lines. It suggests line exercises for students to practice, including horizontal, vertical, inclined, and curved lines. It provides criteria for accurately assessing freehand sketches based on accuracy and neatness of the drawings.

LESSON 6: FREEHAND SKETCHING

Artist’s drawing is generally called freehand drawing. Freehand drawings are made without
the use of drawing instruments or straightedges. This technique is necessary in any area of
drafting and an important skill for everyone.
In this module you will learn the techniques of freehand drawing of lines and isometric box.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the module the students will be able to:

● describe the steps in drawing isometric box, and
● perform freehand line sketching.

No part of this module may be reproduced in any form including photocopying without permission from the writer.

Activity
1. In the second row of the table below, draw a square and inside of it draw a circle. You can
use drawing instrument (ruler, compass). (5 pts)
2. On the fourth row of the table below, draw the same shape but do not use any drawing
instrument except pencil. (5 pts.)

LINE SKETCHING
Free Hand Sketching is such a drawing which is drawn without measuring instruments. This
drawing is drawn with the help of pencil and eraser only. Such drawing is drawn before every type
of actual drawing because it takes less time. One advantage of freehand sketching is that it
needs only patience and continuous practice.

For basic line sketching the table below will show you how to do it.
Kind of Lines Direction of Strokes
Horizontal Line

For right-handed Strokes are drawn from left to right for right-
handed.

For left-handed For the left handed strokes are from right-left.

Vertical Line

Strokes are drawn downward

Inclined Line

Inclined line to the right must be drawn from

the upper-left down to the right

Inclined line to the left must be drawn from the

upper-right down to the left.
Curved Line

Curved Strokes are drawn downward for either

right-handed or left-handed.

SKETCHING AN ISOMETRIC BOX

Isometric projection is a method for visually representing three-dimensional objects in two
dimensions in technical and engineering drawings.
Steps in sketching isometric box:
Step 1. Draw a vertical axis using the 4h Step 2. Draw left and right axis.

the box then draw a vertical line. determine height of the box.

Step 5. Project a line parallel to the left and Step 6. Highlight the object line by using
right axis darker and thicker pencil grade.
Step 7. Erase the construction lines. Step 8. Label the views of the box.
