9 19-11-2020 Honing instructions updated. 003389
Introduction
Whenever new piston rings are mounted, the cylinder liner must be honed. Normally a
light honing is sufficient. If the honing is done when the cylinder liner remains installed in
the engine block, the crankshaft under the cylinder liner being honed must be protected
by a suitable bucket or barrel below the cylinder liner and plastic cover or similar covering
the crankshaft and bearing housings.
CAUTION:
Honing debris must be prevented from falling on the crankshaft, bearings or into oil sump
of the engine.
NOTE:
The honing oil must be clean and of good quality to achieve good honing results. Take
care of proper flow of the honing oil during honing. It is important that the liners are
cleaned thoroughly after the honing as any remaining debris will cause rapid wear of
piston rings and liner.
· The honing is carried out by means of “Plateau honing”.
· Use honing oil as coolant. A light fuel oil of 2-15 cSt could also be used. The condition
and cleanness of honing oil has big effect for the end result
· The pitch angle of the honing lines in the crosshatch pattern should be about 30°, see
Figure 1.

Table 1, Surface parameters according to EN-ISO-13565-2:1997
Definition Symbol Value
Reduced peak height Rpk [μm] 0.7 max.
Core roughness depth Rk [μm] 1.0 - 2.5
Reduced valley depth Rvk [μm] 2.0 - 4.2
Peak material ratio Mr 1 [%] 10 max.
Valley material ratio Mr 2 [%] 70 - 90
If the roughness measuring gauge cannot measure above mentioned units, the surface
parameters in Table 2 may be used.
ATTENTION:
For evaluating the honing result, the values in Table 1 must be used.
Table 2 can only be used for the honing evaluation in such cases when the correct type
of roughness meter is not available. With the parameters in Table 2 plateau honing
cannot be confirmed.

Rz = 4-9 μm
Ra = 0.7-1.2 μm
Tp = 60-85% at 2 μm level. Tp reference line at 2% or Ry
A. Basic instructions for honing with ceramic stones
ATTENTION:
Only ceramic honing stones with a coarseness of 80 and 400 grit should be used.
Step 1. Honing with coarse ceramic stone
1. Dress and mount the coarse grit 80 ceramic stones.
2. Perform for about 20 strokes or until the polished areas in the cylinder liner are
removed. Dress the stones every 10 strokes with a dressing stone.
Step 2. Honing with fine ceramic stone
1. Dress and mount the fine grit 400 ceramic stones.
2. Perform for about 30 strokes. Dress the stones every 10 strokes with a dressing stone.
Step 3. Cleaning the liner
1. Clean the liner by using a suitable brush, water (preferably hot) and soap or cleaning
fluid. Alternatively, light fuel oil can be used.
2. Dry with a cloth and lubricate with engine oil for corrosion protection.

B. Instructions for honing with ceramic stones using “DGL” –deglazing tool
The following instructions should be followed when using Chris-Marine “DGL” deglazing
tool.
Step 1. Honing with coarse ceramic stone
1. Dress and mount the coarse grit 80 ceramic stones.
2. Set stone pressure to 5 bar.
3. Perform 20 strokes. Dress the stones every 10 strokes with a dressing stone.
4. Measure the surface roughness. Average Rk value should be 3-5 µm (normally only
needed if the liner has been honed with diamond stones as a first step).
5. If the surface is too coarse, repeat Step 1 until Rk reaches the target range (normally
only needed if the liner has been honed with diamond stones as a first step).
Step 2. Honing with fine ceramic stone
1. Dress and mount the fine grit 400 ceramic stones.
2. Set stone pressure to 2.5 bar.
3. Perform 10 strokes.
4. Measure the surface roughness. Average Rk value should be just below the maximum
(2.5 µm, see Table 1).
5. If the surface is too coarse, dress the stones and do 10 more strokes until Rk reaches
the target range.
6. If the surface is too fine, go back to Step 1 and then reduce the number of strokes
from 10 to 5 in Step 2.
Step 3. Cleaning the liner
1. Mount the cleaning brushes.
2. Use water (preferably hot) and soap or cleaning fluid. Alternatively, light fuel oil can
be used.
3. Perform 50 strokes.
4. Dry with a lint free cloth and lubricate with engine oil for corrosion protection.
C. Instructions for honing with diamond stones as a first step
In order to increase speed and effectivity of the honing process it is also possible to use
medium coarse diamond stones as first step for honing. However, using diamond stones
is very sensitive and with wrong settings and stone types it can cause too coarse end
results and piston rings scuffing. Please contact Wärtsilä for more advanced diamond
honing services.
NOTE:
Diamond stone honing is rarely needed on gas engines and engines running on LFO
due to low wear rate of cylinder liners.
ATTENTION:
Both grit 80 and grit 400 ceramic stones MUST be used after diamond stones. Plateau
honing with only grit 400 after diamond stones leaves unfavourable flaking to the surface

Stone pressure
Vibrations can occur during the cylinder honing process. Such vibrations can create
unfavourable striping and scratches in the liner and should therefore be avoided.
Lowering the stone pressure will normally reduce the vibration level and may be
necessary especially when using new stones. The stone pressure can then be increased
step-wise as the stones and liner surface “run in”. With new ceramic stones “running in”
will take some minutes.
NOTE:
It is recommended to use exchange stone holders equipped with different grit stones
ready mounted to avoid cracking of ceramic stones and reduce time during switching of
stones.
Ordering
Honing stone ordering information for Chris-Marine "DGL" -deglazing tools are presented
in Table 3. For the other type of honing tool previously delivered with engines, see the
engine specific Spare Part Catalogue.
When ordering, please specify:
· Bulletin number 3210Q011
· Engine serial number(s)
· Part number and Version.
NOTE:
For an installation with engines of several “Ref. types” the same tool can be used for all
of them regardless of the different spare part numbers. This means that only one part
number from each group (A, B and C) needs to be ordered per installation.
