What makes the earth’s surface able to sustain life? There are five (5)
essential ingredients that support life on the surface of the earth.
1. Energy - Steady input of either light or chemical energy from the sun
enables cells to operate chemical reactions essential for life.
2. Atmosphere - Protects the surface of the earth from harmful solar
radiation and collision with meteorites. This mixture of gases, vapor
and dust traps heat to some extent keeping the earth’s surface
warm. It also provides chemicals such as nitrogen (N) and carbon
dioxide (CO 2 ), which support life.
3. Temperature - Affects how atoms and molecules move. Life exists
within a certain range of temperature, from -15 o C to 115 o C. Within
this temperature window, liquid water (H 2 O) is available most of the
time.
4. Water - Dissolves and carries chemicals or nutrients within a cell, and
to and from one cell to another. Life can go dormant in periods when
there is less or no water, but water needs to be regularly available
to sustain life.
5. Nutrients - Necessary to build and nourish the body of an organism.
Nutrients need not only be present, but mechanisms should be also
available to circulate them. For example, the water cycle and
volcanic activity can move and replenish essential nutrients for living
organisms.
Exercises:
Draw a diagram or cartoon of the earth, showing the essential ingredients
or their representative component(s) that support life. Label the essential
ingredients, accordingly.
