Bridge Crossbeam Correction Guide

The document provides a method statement for correcting crossbeams at bridge KM 18+300. It outlines that stiffener beams will be constructed across main girders to improve aesthetics. Steel reinforcement bars will be bound to existing bars and distributed bars added to extend the crossbeams. Formwork measuring 700mm width and 1250mm length will be prepared between girders before concrete is cast and cured for 7 days. Quality control testing of slump and concrete cubes will ensure proper water-cement ratio and strength.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR CORRECTING CROSSBEAMS AT KM 18+300

BRIDGE
1.0 Purpose and scope

The project entails the construction of stiffener beams across the main pre-stressed
girders. The correction of the zig-zag shaped cross beams will improve the bridge aesthetics
on the underside. These installation works, thereof, will be in accordance with the associated
details from the design, drawings and project specifications.

2.0 Materials and Equipment

1. Steel reinforcement bars of sizes 12mm diameter approved by the engineer shall be
used.
2. Marine board formwork prepared as per drawing shall be used.
3. All equipment to be deployed for the construction of the stiffeners (transportation of
materials, steelfixing & concreting etc.) will be in good working condition and well
maintained throughout the duration of the works.

3.0 Methodology and Procedure

 T12 steel bars shall be binded to the existing T20 main bars to run
perpendicular to the installed pre-stressed girders at 150 mm c/c spacing.
 The modified crossbeams shall then be doubly reinforced with ribbed
distribution steel bars of 12mm diameter at a spacing of 150 mm running
parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pre-stressed girders. The distribution bars
shall extend on either side of the existing bars thus extending the crossbeams’s
transverse width to not more than 700mm in length (See drawing attached).
 Marine boards shall then be prepared to have a crossbeam formwork measuring
700mm width in the transverse direction and 1250mm length between the
girders.
 Concrete shall then be casted to the crossbeams after which the formwork shall
be removed and curing shall proceed for the subsequent 7 days.
4.0 Quality control
 Slump tests shall be carried out from time to time when casting concrete to the
crossbeams regulate the water-cement ratio of the concrete. Concrete cubes shall
also be taken for ascertaining the strength.
