Recount Writing

Week One
Recount writing tells the reader what happened at a particular event. This might involve the
author speaking from his or her own interpretation of what happened. There are a variety of
recounts, including factual recounts (a news story), personal recounts (my trip to the zoo) and
imaginative recounts (character viewpoints). It is organised by setting, events in chronological
order and a concluding statement (where the events are summarised and the author may
state how he/she feels about what happened). The main features of recount writing are specific
participants, action verbs and past tense.

Task: Write about an important day in your life. It could be your communion, a wedding
you attended, your birthday or a special day you spent with your family. Discuss with
people at home to jog your memory before writing.

Introduction: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
