What are fanfics?

Fanfic, which can also be called fanfiction or fic, is a fictional narrative

about celebrities or other stories and characters that already exist in real
life written by fans. Initially they existed in printed fanzines , later being
published on blogs , websites and other platforms belonging to
cyberspace . It consists of the non-profit appropriation of characters and
plots from media products such as movies, series, comics, bands,
celebrities, video games, etc. It usually aims to build a parallel universe
to the original, and also to expand the fans' contact with the works they
appreciate to broader limits. With regard to copyright, in general, it is
considered that writing a fanfic does not constitute an infringement of
intellectual property as long as the work is not commercialized and does
not seek profit. Even so, jurists recommend that the ficwriter add at the
beginning of the text a small legal note (or disclaimer) declaring who the
copyright holder really is, in addition to clarifying that the story in
question is not intended to obtain any form of financial gain. There is no
concrete data on the appearance of fanfics in Brazil. I believe that the
phenomenon was consolidated with the exhibition of Knights of the
Zodiac, in 1994, by Rede Manchete. Some magazines, such as Herói
(1994) and Heróis do Futuro (1995), even published fan stories in their
numbers, related to the Knights of the Zodiac universe. However, the
dissemination of fanfics had greater reach thanks to the exhibition of
Sailor Moon, in 1996, also by the extinct Manchete. The main
responsible for this promotion may have been sites like Moonies (closed)
and SOS Sailor Moon, which made available, in mid-1998, the files in
doc.

Types of fanfics

It is difficult to classify any contemporary fictional text, knowing that it

presents itself as a mixture of several genres. In the case of fanfics, this
is greatly amplified, the mixture being part of its nature, taking into
account that the author mixes an original story with a pre-established
context, joins completely different universes (creating a single story
based on the scenarios from Harry Potter and Twilight, for example)
creates new characters that interact with those who are already part of
the “original” story, extends the participation of certain supporting
actors, modifies the plot, structure and language of the stories used as a
starting point. Even so, I, assuming responsibility, would risk
“sheltering” fanfics between the narrative and dramatic genres,

I can see that these stories, written by a heterogeneous audience, were

structured and subdivided in an almost empirical way, roughly speaking,
far from traditional classifications. In this way, the classification of
fanfics follows a different logic, mixing concepts taken from the
manga/anime universe, cinematography and North American
classifications of an undefined nature. Given this, fanfics are categorized
as follows:
4

● a) About the extension:

I. Drabble: Fanfic written with 100 words.

II. Double Drabble: It's a fanfic with a maximum of 200 words.

III. Oneshot: Fanfic that contains only one chapter (one-shot: one-shot - for being a
quick read), be it short and posted all at once or long and posted in parts.

IV. Short Fics: Short fanfics, written in a few chapters.

V. Longfic/Saga: Long fanfics, written in many chapters.

● b) About the structure:

I. Canon: Fanfics that follow the "canon", that is, stories faithful to the "original",
mainly in terms of characterization of characters and maintenance of couples (or
shippings).

II. CrossOver: Fanfics in which different universes (fandoms) are mixed. Eg:
Pokemon/Digimon, Harry Potter/Star Wars.

III. PWP (Plot? What plot?): “Plot? What plot?” This type of fanfic doesn't have much
plot, giving priority to sex scenes.

IV. Side Story: Short fanfics that explain an event that happened in another fanfic, as
a kind of "bonus". It's a chapter that doesn't fit in the middle of the original story.

V. Songfic: Fanfics written accompanied by the lyrics (and/or translation) of the song,
chosen by the author as a soundtrack. Usually their genre is drama and they are
Oneshots or Shortfics.

SAW. TWT (Time? What time?): Stories that do not follow a chronological time.

VII. Darkfic/ Angst: Fanfics abounding in depressing scenes, gloomy atmospheres

and distressing situations. It is the opposite of fanfics defined by the term "waffy".

● c) About the theme

I. Friendship: Fanfics about friendship in general.

II. Citrus: Adult Romance Fanfics; may or may not contain sex scenes.

III. Femslash/Yuri: Fanfics about female homosexual relationship.

IV. Lolicon: Fanfics about romance between a younger woman and an older
woman/man - The term derives from the story "Lolita".

V. Shonen-ai: Fanfics about relationships between men, usually platonic.

SAW. Shoujo-ai: Fanfics about relationships between women, usually platonic.

VII. Shotacon: Fanfic with romance between an older man/woman with a boy.

VIII. Slash/ Yaoi: Fanfic whose main theme focuses on the usually loving relationship
between two men. "Slash" is the English word for "slash".

○ Examples of Fanfics and similar types of stories

● Comics: North American style, similar to comics that we have in Brazil. (Examples of
most popular companies: DC comics and Marvel)

● Manhwas: Korean style, focused on epic literature, medieval romance, drama.

Acclaimed with many awards, Solo Leveling, for example. (Examples of companies:
(NewPOP, Redice Studio)

● Manhuas: Chinese style, focused on wars, drama and political satire. (Example of
company: Bilibili Comics)

● Mangás: Japanese style, focused on anime scenarios and fairytales with non-realistic
style of drawings. (Examples of companies: JBC, Weekly Shonen Jump)
6

● Fun Fact

● One of the biggest literary successes of this

decade, the book “50 shades of grey”, by the
American author EL James, was inspired by a
fanfic about him called “Masters of the
Universe”.

● Fanfics Apps and Websites and more

● Spirit, Wattpad and Fanfics Brasil.

● You can write your own fanfics.
● You can leave comments and ask for other
chapters.
7

● Bonus: Why did I choose this theme?

● You can learn other languages with fanfics, It

helped me a lot on my journey of English
compression.

● Take notes of words you don't understand is a

good way to put these words on your daily basis.
You don't have to memorize, but if you start to
use them and practice, It won't be a difficult
thing anymore.

● If you read or listen to fanfics everyday you will

notice the difference. Listening is very
important to learn another language and listen
to things you like can help a lot.
