The story of FC Gorlitz began in 1904 when a group of locals gathered in the city’s

public square and declared their intention to form a football club. The enthusiasm
was infectious and soon enough they had enough players to field a team, and the
first game was played on a local pitch in the shadow of the city’s old castle.

The team’s colours were chosen to reflect their city’s proud heritage – a deep red
and black, the colours of the old Count of Gorlitz. The team’s first home stadium
was a modest affair, located on the edge of what was then the city’s industrial
district, but it soon became a source of great pride for the local population.

In the early days, FC Gorlitz’s main rivals were local teams from nearby towns and
villages, and these rivalries often spilled over into the stands. But as the years
went by, the team’s reputation grew and they began to take on other teams from
across the region.

By the 1930s, FC Gorlitz had become one of the most successful teams in the region,
and their main rivals were the teams from the nearby cities of Halle and Leipzig.
