Values Development

VALUES
- derived from the latin word, Valere, to be worth, be strong-something intrinsically valuable or
desireable.

VALUES DEVELOPMENT
- is the act, process or result of developing the values for human dignity.

OTHER MEANING OF VALUES:

According to Clyde Kluckhold

“A value is a conception, explicit or implicit, distinctive of an individual or characteristic
of a group, of desireable which influences the selection from available modes, means and
action.”

According to Cornelius Van Der Poel

“Value refers to the understanding of a certain good for an individual or society which is
considered worthy of realization.”

According to Brian Hall, Michael Kenny and Maury Smith

“Value is something that is freely chosen from alternatives and is acted upon, that which
the individual celebrates as eing part of the creative integration in development as a person.”

A value is something or someone who is considered good or worthy and is desireable or

useful. It can be a one-word standard by a person or a group. A policy that everyone in an
organization adheres to and believe in. Society depends on certain values like cooperation and
honesty. To function, values may also be concepts considered important by a select group, and
not by others. It may be explicitly stated as they are more and more accepted in organizations or
maybe unspoken, yet recognized by all.

Values Education

Values Education is the process by which values are formed in the learner under the
guidance of the teachers and parents as he/she interacts with his/her environment.
1. Values are subject matter must have a direct and immediate relevance to the personal life of
the learner.
2. The process must involve all the faculties of the learner. It must not just be cognitive. It must
appeal not only the mind but to the heart, recognizing the total human person.
3. The teacher’s and parents’ personal values play important roles in values learning.

1. Two Factors Affecting Values Formation
a. Influences
b. Experiences
2. Four Types of Experiences
a. Liturgical Experience - As a religious phenomenon, liturgy represents a communal
response to and participation in the sacred through activities reflecting praise, thanksgiving,
remembrance, supplication or repentance. It forms a basis for establishing a relationship with
a divine agency, as well as with other participants in the liturgy
b. Bible Experience - Bible use of the word is not different from the ordinary, which means
"the sum of practical wisdom taught by the events and observations of life," or, to go a little
farther, the personal and practical acquaintance with what is so taught. Hebrews 5:13 gives a
good practical example.
c. Learning Experience - refers to any interaction, course, program, or other experience in
which learning takes place, whether it occurs in traditional academic settings (schools,
classrooms) or nontraditional settings (outside-of-school locations, outdoor environments), or
whether it includes traditional educational interactions (students learning from teachers and
professors) or nontraditional interactions (students learning through games and interactive
software applications).
d. Human Experience - is a term for the realities of human existence including the mental,
emotional, spiritual and physical characteristics of human life.
Values Clarification
- Is a psychotherapy technique that can often help an individual increase awareness of any values
that may have a bearing on lifestyle decisions and actions. This technique can provide an
opportunity for a person to reflect on personal moral dilemmas and allow for values to be
analyzed and clarified

Goal of Values Clarification

- Values clarification is the process of defining one's values. By clarifying our values,
it helps to guide us in our daily activities and helps to align what we say with what we do.
After someone has clarified his or her values, they should be able to quickly name the
values held most dear.

Values are a person's beliefs about what's important, or what matters most to them. For
example, someone who values family might become overwhelmed by work, and
neglect their relationships.

Values clarification is a difficult task. There are three (3) basic steps that are useful in values
clarification.
1. Choice
2. Value
3. Action

Values are better than rules.

Values serve as outline goals.

Values send a message.

Values shape an organization.
