Common Emitter Amplifier

This document describes an experiment using a common emitter amplifier circuit. The purpose is to demonstrate the operation and characteristics of the amplifier and investigate factors influencing its voltage gain. Components, formulas, procedures and results are provided. Measured voltage and current values are close to expected. Voltage gain is measured under normal circuit conditions, with no load, and with the emitter bypass capacitor removed, showing the expected changes. Review questions are answered at the end.

The Common Emitter-Amplifier

NAME: Abdulrahman Ghaleb Mohammad Moh.

Micatronics Engineering
UNI. No.: 399070389
INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Farooq Altawil
DATE: 2/12/2001
Purpose
1- Demonstrate the operation and characteristics if the small signal
common-emitter amplifier.
2- Investigate what influences its voltage gain.

Required parts
 150Ω, 2.7kΩ, Two 3.9kΩ, 4.7kΩ, 10kΩ
 Two 2.2 μF, 10μF
 2N3904 npn silicon transistor
 0-15 V dc power supply
 Generator + oscilloscope
 VOM or DMM

Useful formula
Voltage gain from base to collector
1) Av = Vout / Vin
2) Av = Rc || RL / (RE1 + re) (normal circuit)
3) Av = Rc / (RE1 + re) (no load )
4) Av = Rc || RL / (RE1+RE2 + re) (no bypassed capacitor)
Transistor ac emitter resistance
5) re = 25 mV / IE
Quiescent dc base voltage
6) VB = (R2 / R1 +R2) * Vcc
Quiescent dc emitter voltage
7) VE = VB - VBE
Quiescent dc emitter current
8) IE = VE / (RE1 – RE2)
Quiescent dc collector voltage
9) Vc = Vcc – Ic Rc
Quiescent dc collector emitter voltage
10) VCE = Vcc – Ic (Rc + RE1+RE2 )

Procedure
1- Wire the circuit as shown in figure.
2- After you have checked all connections, apply 15 V supply voltage
to the breadboard. With VOM individually measure the transistor
dc base, emitter, and collector voltages.
3- Connect the channel 1 of oscilloscope to point I (Vin) and channel
2 to point O (Vout). Then connect the signal generator to the circuit
as shown in figure, and adjust the sine wave output level of the
generator at 0.2 V p-p at a frequency of 5 kHz.
4- Using the measured value for the dc emitter voltage obtained in
step 2, calculate the dc emitter current.
5- With an oscilloscope, measure the ac p-p voltage at the junction of
RE1 and RE2 measure the ac p-p voltage at the transistor emitter lead.
6- Calculate the expected voltage gain from base to collector. Now
measure the actual voltage gain by dividing the p-p output voltage
by the p-p input voltage.
7- Now remove RL and measure the output voltage.
8- Reconnect RL and remove 10-μF emitter bypass capacitor and
measure Vout.
