CO-DOMINANCE / INCOMPLETE DOMINANCE
1. Explain the difference between incomplete and codominance.
Incomplete dominance is when the Dominant phenotype does not cover the whole body of a
specimen, whereas codominance is when both dominant traits are present in a specimen.
Codominance
Data: In some chickens, the gene for feather color is controlled by codominance. The allele for
black is BB and the allele for white is WW. The heterozygous phenotype is known as speckled
(black and white spotted).
Expressions:
What is/are the possible combination(s) or genotypes using the two alleles?
Genotype Symbol Genotype Name Phenotype (expressed trait)
BB Dominant Black Black feathers
WW Dominant white White feathers
BW Mixed color Black and white feathers
Problem: If two speckled chickens were crossed, what is the probability that:
a. They would have a black chick? 50%
b. They would have a white chick? 50% Parents: BB X WW
BB BW
BW WW
Incomplete dominance
Data: An offspring of Andalusian chicken produced shows incomplete dominance in its feathers
as the parents (a white feathered Ww male and a black feathered Bb female chicken)
Expressions:
What is/are the possible combination(s) or genotypes using the two alleles?
Genotype Symbol Genotype Name Phenotype (expressed trait)
Ww Dominant-recessive white White feathers
Bb Dominant-recessive black Black feathers
Bw Dominant-recessive black and Dominant black feathers, partial
white white feathers
Problem: What phenotype would be expressed between a white feathered Ww male and a black
feathered Bb female chicken? The possible Phenotypes of the chicken may be A white-spotted
black chicken or vice versa.
Parents Ww X Bb
Ww Bb
Ww Ww Wb
Bb Wb Bb
MULTIPLE ALLELE INHERITANCE
2. Briefly explain regarding the multiple allele inheritance.
When a trait has three or more distinct alleles, we refer to it as having multiple alleles
inheritance. The human ABO blood type alleles/trait is an example of a trait with multiple
alleles. Three distinct alleles exist: allele A (IA), allele B (IB), and allele i (IO or i).
Multiple allele
Data: Parents, Termina and Yuga both have a blood type of B is having a hard time in
determining the legitimate new-born child between Zelda, with a blood of A, and Ravio, with a
blood type of O.
Expressions
What is/are the possible combination(s) or genotypes using multiple alleles?
Genotype Symbol Genotype Name Phenotype (expressed trait)
IBI Blood type B Blood type B
IAIA Blood type A Blood type A
ii Blood type O Blood type O
Problem: Which new-born is the possible legitimate child of the parents?
Parents: BB X BO Parents: BB X AB
B B B B
BB A
AB AB
B
BO BB BB
SEX ASSOCIATED INHERITANCE
3. What is sex-linked, sex-limited and sex-influenced trait inheritance?
Sex-linked traits are genes that are located either in the X or Y chromosome. Sex-
limited traits are controlled by sex-linked or autosomal genes and are limited only to one
sex due to anatomical differences. Sex-influenced traits are autosomal traits that are
influenced by sex. The gender that is more affected shows gene dominance.
Sex-influenced Traits
Data: Baldness B among humans is a dominant trait.
Expressions
Provide three possible combination(s) for each male and female using sex-influenced traits?
Genotype Symbol
Phenotype (expressed trait)

XbXb No baldness
XBXb Slight baldness
XBXB Moderate baldness
Genotype Symbol

XbYb No baldness
XBYb Slight baldness
XBYB High baldness
Sex-limited Traits
Data: Only female mammals could produce the hormone progesterone that helps in lactation L.
Expressions
Provide three possible combination(s) for each male and female using sex-limited traits?
Genotype Symbol
Phenotype (expressed trait)

XLXl Can experience lactation
XLXL Can experience lactation
XlXl Can experience lactation

XLYL Cannot experience lactation
Sex-linked Traits
Data: If a carrier woman and a hemophilic man is expecting to have a daughter.
Expressions
What is/are the possible combination(s) or genotypes using sex-linked traits?
Genotype Symbol Genotype Name Phenotype (expressed trait)
XHXh Non-Hemophiliac Does not have hemophilia
XhY Hemophiliac Has hemophilia
Problem: What is the percentage that the daughter will have hemophilia?
Parents: XHXh X XhY
Xh Y
XhY 100% chance of hemophiliac daughter
XhY
Reflection: I have learned many things from answering this. From Sex limited, influenced, and
linked traits to mastering the process of the Punnett square.
