Site Survey
• A Site Survey consists of:
• Unobstructed line of site to satellite
• Antenna Placement
• Modem Placement
• Determining grounding placement
• Determining cable runs
• Customer considerations

www.Yahsat.ae HUGHES PROPRIETARY

2 H47194 3/27/2018
Satellite Modem Placement Considerations

● Modems use convection cooling

● Recommended ventilation space is approximately 6 inches

● Ensure that the modem is not installed near any heat sources

● Do not place modem inside enclosure or on its side

www.Yahsat.ae HUGHES PROPRIETARY

3 H47194 3/27/2018
Mounting Antenna Requirements

● Approved surfaces: solid wood surface, cement, pole mount (contact utility
company prior to digging), non-penetrating roof mount, asphalt shingle roof
● Do not mount on these surfaces: brick, tile, cedar shingles, stucco, aluminum,
vinyl and asbestos siding
● Antennas must be mounted a minimum of 5 ft. from ground to bottom lip of the
reflector to ensure it is out of reach of children

www.Yahsat.ae HUGHES PROPRIETARY

4 H47194 3/27/2018
Approved Tri Mast Mount for 0.74m Antenna
● Trusses or rafters must be spaced from 16 inches to 24 inches apart
on center.
● The roof surface must consist of relatively thin, resilient materials,
such as asphalt or composite shingles, sheet metal, or similar
materials, over wood sheathing with a thickness that must not exceed
¾ inch.
● A satellite antenna cannot be installed on slate roofs or Spanish tile
roofing made of clay or other brittle materials.
● The roof pitch (also called slope) must be between 3:12 and 12:12.
Type A or C uses support leg
eyelet with 4-hole mounting
● Center hole lag screws must be centered in the truss or rafter.
bracket plate
● The wood-frame roof interior must be unfinished so that placement of
lag screws can be verified and the roof reinforced if necessary.
● The minimum size for roof truss members is 2 inches × 4 inches.
Roof rafters must be nominal 2× material (such as 2 inches × 4
inches or 2 inch ×. 6 inch)
● Large timber roofs with frequent spacing of members are also
This drawing shows a type A permitted. These are constructed of wood members larger than the
trimast, but it applies to both nominal 2× sizes, and include post and beam structures with
type A and C members from 4 inches × 4 inches and larger. The members cannot
be spaced more than 24 inches on center. Their physical properties
must match or exceed those of Spruce-Pine-Fir No. 2

5 H47194 3/27/2018
Determine the Centers of Trusses and Rafters
Use a Stud finder as a primary method for determining where the
center of the roof trusses and rafters.
Alternative method requiring attic access:
● Lift a shingle and drive a nail vertically through the roof beneath the shingle such
that the nail projects above and below the roof at least ¼ inch
● Measure from the nail to the rafter within the attic
● Transfer this measurement onto the roof to locate the rafter and its center.
Ideally this measurement should be accurate to within 1/16 inch.
● After installing the lag screws, check inside the attic to make sure each screw did
not miss the rafter of split out the side of the rafter (even partially)
● Do not leave the nail protruding on the shingled side of the roof

Approved Wall Mount for 0.74m Antenna
Wall Mount
● Verify mast is plumb
● Use tri-mast
● Mount mast so bottom of
reflector is at least five
feet above ground
● Secure all mounting
points of the tri-mast in
studs on wood
construction
● Foot must be at least 12
inches from discontinuous
surface to allow room for
mounting struts

DiSEqC Antenna Pointing Tool (DAPT)
● The DAPT is used to coarse point, fine point, and
then validate the pointing process
● DAPT2, orange in color, has a built in audio feature to
enhance the pointing process for single IFL only
● The return path from the DAPT to the HN9X00 IDU
allows the installer to indicate when he is ready to 1
move from one pointing step to the next. It is also
2
possible to navigate through the pointing process 3
● The DAPT is necessary to perform installation and

Using DAPT2
● Once the DAPT2 is correctly installed, the first thing to notice is the
displayed information. It will be showing you the actual voltage on the
Rx IFL cable. This value could be anywhere between ~11vdc and as
high as ~18.2vdc. This is based on Horizontal or Vertical receive of
the system.
● On your laptop, access the remote’s commissioning page by typing in
192.168.0.1 into a web browser → enter site latitude and longitude,
and select the satellite and beam, if necessary. By pressing the
‘Advance’ button on DAPT (#3, on the right), it will change from the
IFL cable voltage and go through a startup sequence.
● Once you see Logging Done, hit the #3 advance button. The remote
and DAPT should now be in the pointing state. The signal quality
values indicated will be the same as those on your laptop.
● Adjust antenna azimuth and elevation until you obtain the highest
signal quality value.
● The tone from the DAPT2 will be louder and the cadence will
quicken as the beacon is acquired.
● Store and exit pointing mode once maximum signal quality has been
obtained.

Squinter

● The squinter is used to fine-point the

antenna once coarse pointing is
completed. The squinter is placed on the
feed horn and blocks a portion of the RF
signal, thereby capturing the satellite
signal from different portions of the
reflector. The squinter is placed
alternately in four positions: two for
measuring azimuth and two for
measuring elevation.
● Set back plate (tilt) to 0 degrees before
leveling the squinter

4. From the opposite side of the reflector bracket,
place a hex flange nut on each bolt and tighten the
nuts lightly, only until snug. The reflector bracket
should rotate freely between the Az/El mount and
the tilt plate.
When the reflector bracket is correctly attached to the
Az/El mount, you can see the tilt scale numbers above
the tilt pointer, as shown. In the figure, the tilt is set to 0.

Verifying the Polarizer Setting
• The polarizer should come configured to
match Yahsat’s settings of L for LHCP
• If you need to modify the polarization, using
an M3 Allen wrench, remove the four screws
that secure the feed horn to the radio
• Separate the feed horn assembly from the
radio and reposition it so that the marker on
the base aligns with L label on the radio for
LHCP
• If the O‐ring comes out of the feed horn
groove, ensure that it is properly re‐seated
and that the blue mark is visible, as shown, Reflector
before reinstalling the feed horn assembly to
the radio
• Re‐attach the feed horn assembly by
replacing and tightening the four screws to
13in‐lbs +/‐ 2in‐lbs. Ensure that the feed horn
face is flush to the housing on all sides.
