IEEE 802.3bt standards and notes the minimum power per port to be supplied to the
powered devices. This minimum requirement accounts for power loss over the length of
the cable, with a maximum length set at 100m.
With each power increase, cabling requirements also increased, with Cat 5 cabling
being the minimum requirement for Type 3 (60W) and Type 4 (90W) PoE.

Great Market Approach

The standard also includes a mechanism to protect devices that do not support PoE: A
25-kW resistor is added between the power pairs on the powered device, and the power
source provides power only if something close to that resistive value is detected.
IEEE 802.3bt standard offers a host of new features and capabilities, such as support for highly
efficient 4-pair power delivery, and channel definitions for 2.5 gigabits per second (Gbps), 5
Gbps, and 10 Gbps PoE operations, among others. Ratified in September 2018, the new
specification also boosts the maximum power that power sourcing equipment (PSEs) are
capable of by a factor of three, expanding it from 30 to 90 watts, and elevates the power level
for powered devices (PDs) to 71.3 watts. Additionally, IEEE 802.3bt doubles the number of
supported classes from four to eight, addressing Type 3 and 4 devices for both PSEs and PDs
between 4 – 90 watts and 3.84 – 71.3 watts respectively.
The Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA), “worldwide PoE are
expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 11-13% until 2023,
exceeding 180 million ports sold yearly by the end of the period.”
The proliferation of IP-connected network devices in the enterprise has not only driven the need
for faster data rates, but also increased power. This has thrown the door wide open for power
over Ethernet (PoE).
PoE allows connected devices to share data and power connectivity over a single copper Ethernet
cable—streamlining infrastructure and simplifying operations. While PoE has been part of the
enterprise network since 1999, its capabilities and importance have taken big leaps forward in
recent years with the development of higher-wattage PoE devices. These devices include
common enterprise fixtures such as desktop telephones, security cameras, video monitors and
wireless access points for Wi-Fi or in-building wireless services, among others. With today’s
advanced PoE technologies and devices, enterprise networks no longer need to run a separate ac
(alternating current) power feed to every connected device. And that’s just the beginning. The
benefits of PoE also include better-designed electrical safety features, better device management
and lower cost of installation and maintenance.

Whether it’s Wi-Fi access points, security cameras, LED lighting, IP phones, RFID security or
building management systems, the increasing range of PoE devices means there is a great
opportunity for the Enterprise to leverage remote power and better manage infrastructure-related
expenses while using existing cabling.

By using communications cabling to deliver remote power, PoE enables cost-effective power
delivery to a wide range of devices. Other advantages include:

 Smaller size of cables and connectors (versus ac line power) enables higher density.
 Continuous monitoring of the circuit for faults and other operating conditions
 Low-voltage cabling can be installed as part of the ITC network for safer, lower-cost
installations.
 Improved control and operation of devices for better facility management
 Synergies between power delivery and communications enable intelligent infrastructure.
 UPS backup, enabling robust and reliable operation.

Power Management Modes in POE Sources to Safeguard POE Powered Equipment’s

A switch or line card that supports PoE has a PoE controller. The controller determines
how much power to allocate to the PoE interfaces. If the power consumption of a
connected PD exceeds the maximum power allocated to that interface, the controller
turns off power to the interface.

The method used to allocate power depends on the power management mode:

Class Mode Power is allocated dynamically using the classification process. This is the
default mode.

Static Mode Power is allocated based on the maximum power configuration.

These methods are described below.

Classification
Classification is a process by which the power sourcing equipment (PSE) and powered
device (PD) exchange information to dynamically determine the power allocation. The
process begins when a PD is connected to a PoE interface and presents a class signature.
The PoE IEEE standards define classes for devices based on the levels of power they
require.

The PSE responds with a power allocation based on the class of the PD. If LLDP is
enabled on the interface, the allocation can be adjusted using LLDP power negotiation.

LLDP Power Negotiation

In class management mode, LLDP power negotiation can be used to refine the power
allocation to the PD though an exchange of LLDP messages. (If the actual power
requirement of the PD is a lower amount of power than it was allocated based on its
class designation the PSE can reduce the power allocation.

The negotiation power allocation will include some additional power guard to
accommodate cable length. This additional allocated power is approximately 15 percent
of the requested value, and it can allocate the power in small increments. For devices
that use LLDP power negotiation the power reserved for the interface is always greater
than the LLDP-requested power value by the external POE device.

LLDP power negotiation is enabled by default in class management mode for LLDP
interfaces. On interfaces that are in class management mode but are not enabled for
LLDP, the power allocation is determined solely by the class of the PD.

(Once power is allocated based on LLDP power negotiation LLDP power negotiation
remains in effect even if the interface link status goes off and on, or if the LLDP
configuration is changed.)

Maximum PoE Power Consumption The maximum PoE power consumption is the total
amount of power available for the PoE controller to all the PoE interfaces. In allocation
power, the PoE controller cannot exceed the maximum PoE power consumption.

If your switch supports power supplies of different Capacities keep the following points
in mind:

If you change your existing power supply to a lower-capacity power supply, the
maximum PoE power consumption might no longer be Sufficient to power all the PoE
ports on the switch.

If your switch supports redundant power supplies and you have installed power supplies
of different Capacities the maximum PoE power consumption is based on the wattage of
the lowest-capacity power supply.
You cannot increase the number of PoE-capable ports on a switch by installing a power
supply that has a higher capacity.

The evolution of PoE: standards, Types and Classes

PoE cabling design and deployment.

Over the past decade, PoE has been seen as a key powering strategy—allowing network
managers, installers, and integrators to use structured cabling to provide both power and data to
many of their network devices. While the ability to run low-voltage power and data over the
same cable could significantly simplify deployment and management of PoE networks, planning
and designing them to achieve the best balance of cost, performance and manageability can be
tricky. Engineers must consider several key variables. Key factors that affect and influence the
efficient design and operation of your PoE network include:

 Channel topology: cable pathway infrastructure

 Managing thermal loads: cable bundling, spacing and lengths
 Selection of cables, cords, and connectors

802.3bt power over Ethernet standard (also known as four-pair PoE or simply 4PPoE)
stipulates support for a full 120 watts, deliverable via Category 6A cabling.

The number of PoE-enabled edge devices—such as HD/4K digital signage; pan, tilt and
zoom (PTZ) cameras; and smart LED lighting—is expected to continue to increase
demand.

PoE will likely also be considered as increasingly important as a stable backup power
source for converged edge devices where uptime is critical. For example, an HD camera
may feed data to multiple applications such as security systems, people counting,
machine learning (ML) analytics and occupancy sensors. By combining and centralizing
power and data at the network switch with dedicated power circuits, PoE simplifies and
automates troubleshooting and management.

The classes of powered devices and associated power levels. Because of line loss, the
power range of the powered device is less than the maximum power delivered at the PoE
port for each class. Line loss is influenced by cable length, cable quality, and other
factors and is typically less than 16 percent of the maximum power.

IEEE 802.3bt

The IEEE 802.3bt standard includes enhancements to Existing PoE Functionality by such
as power management, Negotiation and Classification.

Four Pair Standard

Previous IEEE PoE standards have used two pairs out of four pairs of twisted wire in an
Ethernet cable to deliver power. The pairs used depend on the mode of PoE Operation
mode A or mode B. In mode A, PoE delivers power on the same pairs used to deliver
data (pair 1-2 and pair 3-6). Mode B separates the power delivery from data delivery by
using the spare pairs for power (pair 4-5 and pair 7-8).

PoE-bt is the First IEEE standard to deliver power over all four pairs of wire. Pre-
standard of Implementation that provided power over four pairs, such as PoE-4P, are
replaced by this standard.
Power Class Levels

PoE standards define classes of powered devices based on the levels of power that they
require. The IEEE 802.3bt standard introduces two new types of PoE powered devices,
type 3 and type 4, which add an additional four power class levels (5 through 8). Type 3,
which includes classes 5-6, can support up to 60 W of power, and type 4, which includes
classes 7-8, can support up to 120 W.

Powered Device Signatures

Before the power sourcing equipment (PSE) can deliver power to a connected powered
device (PD), it performs a series of checks on the PD. The First check is known as
signature detection The PSE uses a low voltage to measure the resistance of the PD. If the
correct level of resistance is detected, the switch knows that the PD is capable of
receiving power. In PoE-bt, signature detection is performed on each set of pairs: the data
pair and the spare pair. The connected PD must present a valid signature for each pair set
to show that it can accept 4-pair power.

The PSE then performs a connection check to determine if the PD is a single-signature or

a dual signature PD. Single-signature PDs have one signature that applies to both sets of
pairs: the data pair and the spare pair. Dual-signature PDs support two signatures, one for
each pair set. Dual-signature PDs can support two power channels on a single interface,
and each channel can support a different| power class.

LLDP Power Negotiation

IEEE 802.3bt supports enhanced power negotiation using Link Layer Discovery Protocol
(LLDP). LLDP power negotiation enables the PSE to refine the power allocation to the PD. (A
PD using LLDP can request a lower amount of power than it was allocated based on its class
designation)

PoE-bt extends the set of fields in the LLDP protocol to allow the PSE and PD to exchange
Information about the maximum amount of power that the PSE has available. This is not an -
allocation but can be used to inform the power request from the PD.

Auto Classification

The IEEE 802.3bt standard introduces automatic class functionality. The auto-class feature
allows the PSE to determine the actual maximum power drawn by the PD. The PSE measures the
power consumption of the PD over a define Time period. Based on that measurement, the PSE
sets the maximum power output for the PD.

PoE-bt Feature Support

PoE-bt supports the same features as previous versions of PoE, with the exception of the
following, which are not supported:

• Static power management mode

• Maximum power consumption

• Guard band

Outdoor Networking Solution

33 | P a g e w w w. L i n kv ue syste m. com
LINK VUE SYSTEM PVT LTD

One of the greatest challenges in modern networking is spanning large distances while staying within
a budget. Unfortunately, cheap hardware usually fails to accommodate longer ranges or succumbs to
harsh outdoor environments. That forces you into more expensive technologies, like fiber optics, which
may not be affordable.

34 | P a g e w w w. L i n kv ue syste m. com
LINK VUE SYSTEM PVT LTD
For Wi-Fi communication to reach spans further than the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standard of a few hundred
feet, point-to-point wireless bridging could be the perfect solution you seek. Bridging helps networks
transmit across miles using traditional Wi-Fi, cuts installation costs by orders of magnitude, and offers
better performance than many competing solutions. Take a minute to explore point-to-point wireless
bridging and all that it offers. You might have found the best way to solve your networking challenges.

The Architecture of Point-to-Point Wireless Bridging

Point-to-point wireless bridging is one of the most
reliable ways to connect remote Wi-Fi assets. For
outdoor applications and campus-level
networking, it presents an option to connect access
points and clients over an area without the need
for excessive and costly cabling.

The technology typically works using directional

line-of-sight antennas, which concentrate the
signal to each point in the bridge, enabling
stronger reception and transmission and less
power consumption. The architecture also
mitigates signal-to-noise problems and data loss.
For these reasons, line-of-sight Wi-Fi typically
maintains 99.99% reliability.

SURGE PROTECTOR’S PARAMETERS

Uc (Maximum continuous operating Voltage)

Maximum effective voltage that can be applied permanently to the terminals of the protection device.
In (Nominal current)
Peak current in 8/20 μs waveform the protection device can withstand 20 times without reaching end of
life.
Imax (Maximum discharge current)
Peak current with 8/20 μs waveform which the protection device can withstand.
Iimp (Impulse current)
Peak current with 10/350 μs waveform which the protection device can withstand without reaching end
of life.
Up (Voltage protection level)
Maximum residual voltage between the terminals of the protection device during the application of a peak
current.
Ures (Residual voltage)
Residual voltage of the surge protector during an 8/20μs current waveform injection at a determined
rating.
TOV (Temporary Overvoltage)
The temporary overvoltage is the maximum AC voltage the surge protector can withstand during defined
durations (5 seconds and 120 mn), without failure or with controlled disconnection. This parameter U T is
greater to Uc. An additional test is required for TT AC system, to simulate a temporary «high voltage»
overvoltages (TOV) between Neutral and PE (application of 1200 Vac, 300 A for 200 ms): the compliance
with this test requires the use of the CT2 diagram (specific gas tube between N and PE)
2. CLASSIFICATION OF SURGE PROTECTORS
Protection devices are classified into types according to discharge capacity:
Type 1:
Tested with a 10/350 μs waveform (Class I test), which simulates the current produced by a direct
lightning strike. Ability to discharge very high currents to earth, providing a high Up - voltage protection
level. Must be accompanied by downstream Type 2 protectors. Designed for use in incoming power supply
panels where the risk of lightning strike is high, for example in buildings with an external protection
system.

37 | P a g e w w w. L i n kv ue syste m. com
LINK VUE SYSTEM PVT LTD
Type 2:
Tested with a 8/20 μs waveform (Class II test), which simulates the current produced in the event of a
switching or lightning strike on the distribution line or its vicinity. Ability to discharge high currents to
earth, providing a medium Up - voltage protection level. Designed for use in distribution panels located
downstream of Type 1 protectors or in incoming power supply panels in areas with low exposure to
lightning strikes.
Type 3:
Tested with a combined 1.2/50 μs - 8/20 μs waveform (Class III test), which simulates the current and
voltage that can reach the equipment to be protected. Ability to discharge medium currents to earth,
providing a low Up - voltage protection level. Always installed downstream of a Type 2 protection, it is
designed to protect sensitive equipment or equipment located more than 20m downstream of the Type 2
device.

A grounding system is a fundamental element of any electrical installation, which protects

equipment and people from dangerous voltage differences. Effective grounding requires a
low ground resistance because the step and touch voltages are directly dependent on this
value. The status and functionality of the grounding system must be guaranteed by periodic
inspections, since both safety elements (protections, insulation, etc.) and functional
elements (filters, measurement lines, screens, etc.) can be affected, causing serious risks to
goods, equipment, and people. Grounding is the common element where structural,
electrical, piping, etc. elements are directly or indirectly connected. Any malfunction or
defect generates certain activity in the grounding system that can be detected and used as
an indicator of failure or degradation to anticipate risk situations, optimize maintenance,
etc. Incorporating sensorization, communications and digital platforms, Big Data and
Artificial Intelligence in grounding revolutionizes the management, maintenance, and global
control of the installation. Continuous and automatic monitoring of the grounding resistance
value allows maintaining adequate safety levels for people and equipment, being able to
identify risk situations that require preventive or corrective maintenance, reducing

maintenance costs and possible damages caused by a non-optimized grounding system.
SMART EARTHING MONITOR is an
intelligent grounding monitoring system that measures the status of the grounding systems
(grounding resistance and continuity of the grounding conductor) at regular and
programmable.
