NEWS
FLOODS IN PAKISTAN
On June 14th, the Pandora's box of climate change was pried open, and one-third of Pakistan was hit with an
unprecedented flood. Affecting mainly the provinces of Baluchistan and Sindh, 33 million people including 16 million
children were harmed, and At least 1700 people have died. The floods were triggered due to excessive monsoon
raining as well as glacier melting following a severe heat wave. Moreover, survivors and their families signify their
disappointment in the delayed response and help from the Sindh government. The lack of prioritization and funding
towards preventative measures and infrastructure can no longer be concealed and the government will continue to
face the repercussions of such mismanagement. The United Nations called this flood an "unprecedented climate
catastrophe". This flood alone is already the main reason for the rapid spread of cholera, dengue, polio, malaria, and
COVID-19 these days.
Severe Food shortages as well as economic damage to the already weak economy of Pakistan, are the issues to be
faced at the tip of the iceberg. If left undealt with, climate issues like such will recur, trigger a snowball effect and harm
our lives ahead of us. Demand for preventative infrastructure, investing in damage control, and helping those in need
in these dire times are needed. Provisions of sanitary products and care for pregnant women are feigned with
ignorance. More is less. However much help can be provided should by all means be given by all privileged and able
citizens of the nation.
UKRAINE- RUSSIA WAR
Vladimir Putin, The Russian President, warned the world of his intentions to launch what he
described as ‘a military operation’ on Ukraine. Whether the West took his threats seriously
did not matter because on February 24 Thursday 2022, Putin ordered a full-scale invasion,
crossing a force of some two hundred thousand troops into Ukrainian territory from the
south (Crimea), east (Russia), and north (Belarus), in an attempt to seize major cities,
including the capital Kyiv, and depose the government.
Putin justified his actions by saying it was to demilitarize & denazify Ukraine. Thereon, the
annexation of Ukraine commenced, starting with Kyiv. Buildings, houses, offices, churches
and temples were demolished. People started fleeing the country to find safe havens for
them and their families. Poland, its next door neighbor, was soon greeted by thousands of
people of Ukraine homeless. President of Ukraine, Zelensky, debunked all rumors of fleeing
the country amidst war, saying he would proudly defend it till the end. Now foreign aid from
all over the world started pouring in as countries like US & profound international
organizations such as UN condemned Putin’s actions and did not conceal their enthusiasm in
helping the refugees. In late August, Ukraine launched a major counteroffensive against
Russian forces, recapturing thousands of square miles of territory in the Kharkov and
Kherson regions. The campaigns marked a stunning setback for Russia. Amid the Russian
retreat, Putin ordered the mobilization of some three hundred thousand more troops,
illegally annexed four more Ukrainian regions, and threatened to use nuclear weapons to
defend Russia’s “territorial integrity.” Most security analysts see little chance for diplomacy
in the months ahead, as both sides have strong motives to continue the fight.

"IVY has broadened my vision and has brought so much diversity
in me. I have met so many people from different backgrounds
and lifestyles but if there's something common in all of us is that
we all move through life with so much grace, as if nothing is
bothering us while in reality there is so much going on in our
heads. Everyone is dealing with issues but that never stops us
from being compassionate toward others and this quality is so
inspiring to me. This is what makes me grateful for studying
