Questions:
1. How did you find the nth term of an arithmetic sequence?
2. How did you answer the problem that involves arithmetic sequence?

Present and answer the given sequence:

1. Insert 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25?

2. Find the arithmetic means between 8 and 20.

2. Let x = be the arith. mean
X = (8+20) / 2 = 28/2 = 14
What is arithmetic means? All terms between any two terms in an arithmetic
sequence are called arithmetic means.
How did you get the 4 arithmetic means between5 and 25? By finding d using the
formula a n = a 1 + (n-1) d
What about that in number 2, how is it done? It’s just like getting the average of the
two terms.

Finding a certain number of terms between given terms of an arithmetic sequence is a common task

DISCUSSIONS:

ARITHMETIC MEAN
The numbers between arithmetic extremes are called arithmetic mean, found in an
arithmetic sequence wherein each term is obtained by adding a fixed value called the
common difference.
Example : 4, 7, 10, 13 16 the arithmetic means are 7, 10 and 13
Example : 9, 15 , 21 the arithmetic mean is 15
The arithmetic mean or the “mean” between two numbers is sometimes called the
AVERAGE of two numbers. It is also possible to insert any numbers of terms between any
two given terms such as that the whole set of numbers will form arithmetic sequence.
Example: Insert 3 arithmetic means between 1 and 17
Use the arithmetic sequence formula to find the common difference (d).
an = a1 + (n-1)d a 2 = a1 + d a3 = a1 + 2d a4 = a1 + 3d
a5 = 1 + (5-1)d a2 = 1 + 4 a3 = 1 + 2(4) a4 = 1 + 3(4)
17 = 1 +4d a2 = 5 a2 = 9 a4 = 13
16 = 4d
d=4 or use the formula for d= an – a1 / n-1
Example: Insert arithmetic mean between 95 and 185
95, ____, 185
an = a1 + (n-1)d OR Let A = 95
B = middle term
185 = 95 + (3-1) d C = 185
185 = 95 + 2d
185-95 = 2d Since B is the middle term of the two, then
90 = 2d
( A+C ) 95+185 280
d = 45 B= = = = 140
2 2 2
a2 = a1 + d
a2 = 95 + 45 a2 = 140
SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES

ARITHMETIC MEANS

Solve what is asked:

 Write the first five terms of arithmetic sequence when a1 = 8 and d = -3.
Expected answers: a1 = 8, a2 = 5, a3 = 2, a4 = -1 a5 = -4
8, 5, 2, -1, -4

DIRECTION: Find the missing term or terms in each arithmetic sequence.
