Boiler and Engine Classification Guide

A boiler is a closed vessel, usually made of steel, that transfers heat from fuel combustion to water to generate steam. Boilers can be classified in several ways, including by their steam circulation method (forced or natural), fuel source, pressure level, and more. Key factors in selecting a boiler include steam generation needs, cost, maintenance requirements, and fuel/water availability. An ideal boiler efficiently produces the required steam at low expense while allowing easy access for repairs.

Boiler: A steam generator or boiler is, usually, a closed vessel made of steel.

Its function is to transfer

the heat produced by the combustion of fuel (solid, liquid or gaseous) to water, and ultimately to
generate steam.

Classification of boilers:

 Fire tube and water tube

 Internally fired and externally fired
 Vertical, horizontal and inclined
 Stationary and portable
 Single tube and multiple tubes
 High pressure and low pressure
 Forced Circulation and Natural Circulation
 According to the source of fuel

Forced Circulation: circulation of water is done by a forced pump.

Natural Circulation: Circulation of water in the takes place due to natural convection currents
produced by application of heat.
Factors to be considered while selecting of a boiler:

•Steam generation rate. •Quality of steam.

•Floor area available. •Accessibility for repair and inspection.
•Comparative initial cost. •The fuel and water availability.
•Operation and maintenance cost. •Whether the steam raised is used at a
•Ease of erection. steady or
Ease of erection. fluctuating load.
•The working pressure.

Essentials of a good steam boiler

•Maximum steam at minimum expense. •Accessibility for repair and inspection.

•Steam production rate should be as per •Lower initial cost.
requirement. •Ease of Erection facility.
•Reliable. •The portable load factor.
•It should occupy minimum space. •The fuel and water availability.
•Accessibility for repair and inspection. •Lower Operation and maintenance cost.
Heat Engines: A machine or device which derives heat from the combustion of fuel and converts part
of this energy into mechanical work is called a heat engine.

Stroke: Movement from BDC to TDC.

According to-
1) Number of cylinders
a) Single cylinder Engine
b) Multi-cylinder Engine

2) Method of cooling the cylinder

a) Air cooled engine
b) Water cooled engine

3) Method of Ignition
a) Spark Ignition
b) Compression ignition

4) Type of fuel used

a) Gas
b) Petrol
c) Diesel

5) Number of strokes
a) 2 Stroke
b) 4 stroke

6) Cycle of operation
a) Otto cycle
b) Diesel cycle
c) Dual Cycle

7. According to the method of fuel injection

a) Carburettor engines, and b) Air injection engines.
8. According to the arrangement of cylinders
a) Vertical engines, b) Horizontal engines, c) Radial engines,
d) In-line multi-cylinder engines, e) V-type multi-cylinder engines,
f) Opposite-cylinder engines, and g) Opposite-piston engines.
9. According to the valve mechanism
a) overhead valve engines, and b) Side valve engines.

What is multi point fuel injection (MPFI) system?

The MPFI is a system or method of injecting fuel into internal combustion engine through multi ports
situated on intake valve of each cylinder. It delivers an exact quantity of fuel in each cylinder at the right
time.
