FOREWORD
‘the First Program For Strings (for string orchestra) may be started when the class reaches Page
32 in Volume fof the String Builder. It may, however, beused inconjunction with any standard string
chase Method, as this bookis acompletaunit in itself and may beused separately for class or individual
instruction.
‘the students are gradually trained to read ahead, to listen to the voice that is carrying the mel
cody, ani to develop peripheral vision inorder to follow the Conductor. Each part is carefully mare
Sey sat the player knows just what instrument is playing the melody. He is encouraged to gauge is
‘ynamie level So that he develops an awareness of balance and musical phrasing,
VIOLIN, VIOLA and CELLO- a
Suarting on Page 2, we have the 2% finger pattern, (4 finger pattern for Cello), which means
that te dnd snd 2rd fingers are a half-step apart and are placed close to each other. Starting from
Page 7, (Page 8 for Viola), F natural and C natural are introduced, which gives us the x patter
age lu firevand second fingers a half-step apart. As always, the remaining fingers are 2 whole step
apart.
‘the two slanted lines (//) moan that the bow is to be lifted from the string. This is done usually
at the sad of a phrase. Ite purpose 1s to make the pupil cognizant of the architecture of each piece by
‘Pointing out the phrases. Lifting and resetting the bow helps to develop control of the bow arms
‘the comma (9) means a slight pause, also usually at the end of a phrase, with the bow remain~
Ing on ts string. ‘This usually ooours when the phrase ends on the down-bow above the middle of the
bow,
‘Toconform with the String Builder, the acoldentalsareplaced before each note Father than in the
signature.
