Class will meet on the following days:
January 12, 19, February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 2 (1st Midterm Exam), 16, 23, 30, April 6 , 13, 20
(2nd Midterm Exam)

Objectives
This course provides students with principles and methods in forecasting for managerial planning.
Major topics include multiple regression analysis, time series analysis (with emphasis on smoothing
techniques), decomposition methods, Box-Jenkins ARIMA procedures, big data, and text mining, etc.
Applications of the methods to both short-term and long-term forecasting to business, industries, and
national business trends are also emphasized.

Prerequisites: DSME2010/2011 and DSME2020/2021

Expectations of Students
 Students taking this class are expected to have a solid understanding of multiple regression
analysis. (Very important)
 Attend all classes and participate in class discussions.
 Complete all assignments, projects and computer applications independently.
 Use statistical software for forecasting applications.
 Apply the forecasting techniques to real economic and business data.

A Outstanding performance on all learning outcomes.
A- Generally outstanding performance on all (or almost all) learning outcomes.
B Substantial performance on all learning outcomes, OR high performance on some learning
outcomes which compensates for less satisfactory performance on others, resulting in
overall substantial performance.
C Satisfactory performance on the majority of learning outcomes, possibly with a few
weaknesses.
D Barely satisfactory performance on a number of learning outcomes.
F Unsatisfactory performance on a number of learning outcomes, OR failure to meet
specified assessment requirements.
