Course Objective
The objective of this course is to familiarize the prospective engineers with techniques in calculus,
multivariate analysis and linear algebra. It aims to equip the students with standard concepts and tools at
an intermediate to advanced level that will serve them well towards tackling more advanced level of
mathematics and applications that they would find useful in their disciplines. More precisely, the
objectives are:

1. To introduce the idea of applying differential and integral calculus to notions of curvature and to
improper integrals. Apart from some applications it gives a basic introduction on Beta and
Gamma functions.
2. To introduce the fallouts of Rolle’s Theorem that is fundamental to application of analysis to
Engineering problems.
3. To develop the tool of power series and Fourier series for learning advanced Engineering
Mathematics.
4. To familiarize the student with functions of several variables that is essential in most branches of
engineering.
5. To develop the essential tool of matrices and linear algebra in a comprehensive manner.
UNIT-I Calculus
Evolutes and Involutes; Evaluation of definite and improper integrals, Beta and Gamma functions
and their properties, Applications of definite integrals to evaluate surface areas and volumes of
revolutions.
UNIT-II Calculus
Rolle’s theorem, Mean Value theorems, Taylor’s and Maclaurin theorems, Indeterminate forms and
L’ Hospital’s rule, Maxima & Minima (one & two variables).
UNIT-III Sequences and Series
Convergence of sequence and series, tests for convergence; Power series, Taylor's series; Fourier
series: Half range sine and cosine series, Parseval’s theorem.
UNIT-IV Vector Spaces
Vector Space, Vector Sub Space, Linear Combination of Vectors, Linearly Dependent, Linearly
Independent, Basis of a Vector Space, Linear Transformations.
UNIT-V Matrices
Rank of a Matrix, Solution of Simultaneous Linear Equations by Elementary Transformation,
Consistency of Equation, Eigen Values and Eigen Vectors, Cayley-Hamilton theorem and its
applications to find inverse.
Course Outcomes
The objective of this course is to familiarize the prospective engineers with techniques in calculus,

Boiler problems their causes, effects and prevention, Caustic embrittlement, Priming, foaming, boiler
Corrosion, Conditioning of water and simple numerical problems on water softening and water analysis.
UNIT – II
FUELS
Introduction and Classification. calorific values, fuel resources in India, Proximate and Ultimate
analysis of coal, clinker formation, pulverized coal, Carbonization methods of manufacture of coke,
cracking, cracked gasoline, varieties of fuel oils, their properties and uses, knocking, antiknocking
compounds, Problems based on combustion, air and oxygen calculation.
Lubricants
Types, classification of lubricants, mechanism and process of lubrication, physical and chemical
properties, testing of lubricants, application of lubricants.
UNIT – III
Use of free energy in Chemical Equilibrium and Corrosion
Thermodynamic functions, energy entropy and free energy, emf cell potential, the Nernst equation and
applications. The use of free Energy, primary and secondary batteries, Types of battery, thermal battery
and fuel cell.
Theories and mechanism of Corrosion, factors affecting the rate of Corrosion, cathodic and anodic
protection of metals, Various measures to prevent corrosion, important Inorganic metallic and non-
metallic Coatings and organic-Coatings.
UNIT-IV Materials
Cement and Refractories: Types of Cements, manufacture, properties and uses of Portland
cement, chemistry of setting and hardening of cement. Definition, classification, property and uses of
refractory.
Chemistry of High Polymers: Introduction and classification, Mechanism of Polymerization, PE,
PVC, PMMA, Nylons and Bakelite Polymers, plastics their preparation, engineering properties and
uses, Natural and Synthetic rubbers compounding and vulcanization, properties and uses of Silicones
Adhesives.

Basic Environmental Chemistry
A. Pollution: Causes of pollution, Air pollution and its types, Green House Effect, importance of ozone
layer, control of air pollution, water pollution sources, methods of prevention, soil or land pollution and
its control, radioactive pollution and its control.
B. Instrumental techniques in chemical analysis. Introduction of spectroscopy, Principle and application
of Infrared, Ultra violet, Nuclear magnetic Resonance, Chromatography, Gas- Chromatography,
Colorimetry, Lambert’s Beer’s law.
Course Outcomes
After successfully finishing the course, the students must possess skills to think critically and able
to analyze and solve chemical problems with an engineer’s purview. Laboratory work is intended
to learn conducting experiments and analyzing data and their interpretation to suggest the solution
of the problems.

Course Objectives
After the completion of the course, the student shall be able:

(ii) Metal Bench Work: Use, care and maintenance of hand tools such as hammers, cold chisel

(iii) Fitting Operations: Chipping, Filling, Drilling, and Tapping.

1) Preparation of job piece by making use of filling, sawing, and chipping operation.

2. Black Smithy Shop:
(i) Smithy Furnace Maintenance, control of fire and fuel used in smithy shop.
(ii) Uses of various smithy tools: Swage block, Anvil, different types of Hammers, Tongs,
Flatters, Coldset, Hotset, fullers set Hammers, Punches, Drifts and Rivet headers, Calipers
(outside and inside) Templates used in forging.
(iii) Introduction to Forging and Forging methods: Heating metals for forging, Forging Operations,
Upsetting, Drawing Down, Fullering, Swaging, Platening, Cutting Down, Forge welding,
Punching and Drifting.
