beginning of the school year teachers are provided with the initial active shooter training and
go through the appropriate lockdown procedures. Teachers will have professional
development sessions that will focus on specific school safety training and awareness. The
focus of each month is documented on the calendar and this PD can be handled both in
person as well as virtually/self-paced lessons.

Revisiting/ After each drill, it is important to conduct a debriefing to ensure that we are making the
Debriefing after appropriate improvements that are necessary. The debriefing team should include the
each drill principal, assistant principal, school resource officer, and the nurse. The team will come
together and go through all the aspects of the drill and take apart all the parts to figure out
what can be learned from this scenario in the event of an actual emergency. During the
debriefing, the points that should be discussed will be:
● The areas of the drill that were effective.
● Issues that occurred during the drill
● What improvements need to be made in the future to make the drill more effective in
the future and in case of a real event.
Once the debriefing is concluded any necessary changes will be made to the school’s safety
plan immediately. Any changes will be discussed with the staff during a meeting and the
updated plan will be shared through the live email link that provides the updated changes.

Rationale: Collaboration, Vision/Mission, Moral Legal Considerations

The safety calendar was developed with the collaboration of stakeholders with a focus on

all aspects of school safety. Stakeholders included administrators, teachers, parents, and the

districts. On the calendar the focus this year is to have enough drills to ensure that students are

getting adequate practice however it was important to also not overdue the number of drills that

they have to go through. The school’s vision and mission are upheld through the safety calendar

by promoting a safe and secure environment for our students. Ensuring that they have a place to

learn where safety is a priority our students will be able to focus on what is the most important,

which is their education. Students will also learn about safety and how to stay safe in different

situations.

The moral and legal considerations in making the decisions for the calendar are the

priority of school safety. Through the input of multiple stakeholders, the calendar is outlined to

meet state and federal regulations. This is an important part of the overall safety plan showing

the exact steps necessary in various situations to ensure the safest outcome. Through the living

document, updates can be made after each drill to keep changes fluid and prove best practices.

Through this continuous review process, the safety committee makes sure that the information is

updated and meets the needs of the community that the school serves.
