FOREWORD

All praise be directed to Allah SWT, because of his graces and blessings, I was
able to be given this opportunity to write a thesis in full English, something that I
thought I would never be able to do. I would also like to thank the people who
were involved in the creation of this thesis :
1. My parents, who both contributed into this thesis, my mother who pushed
me into giving my all into writing this thesis, and also my father who was
kind enough to show me an example of his thesis back when he was a
university student (which came in handy, thanks dad).
2. My English teacher, Ustadz Heru, who worked tirelessly reviewing my
thesis, making sure that it is in it’s utmost perfect state.
3. Dhani, my friend from probolinggo. He always gave me sage advices and
always prevented me from doing stupid things (which i ended up doing
anyways, sorry bro) and introduced me to a circle of very supportive people
who lifted each other up.
4. My circle of friends, Komunitas Jomblo, who laughed with (and sometimes
at) me, and helped me go through tough times.

ABSTRACT

Bumi, Indra Pandita Wahyu Sakti Lingga. 2021. Analysis of the intrinsic elements
on the novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth, by Jules Verne”. Thesis, Tunas
Luhur Senior High School (Full day school), Science Course. Supervisor : Heru
Nur Ikhwan

Keyword(s) : Novel, Intrinsic Elements

Novel was described as a fictitious prose narrative of book length, typically
representing character and action with some degree of realism. Novels have
created some of the most intriguing works of literature that spans over many
genres, most notably science-fiction. Why? Us humans often ask ourselves
ridiculous questions, such as what is in the interior of the earth, though it is
possible, we humans have never explored the earth to such depths, so we have
only imagined what lies beneath our planet, the answers that some authors have to
these questions are what drew in the readers to read that specific author’s book.

The writer had taken an interest in writing a thesis about this specific type of
literature, in an effort to share the information that he has procured in the process
of writing his thesis, and hopefully to increase the rate of interest in reading. Of
course every thesis requires a source material, in this case, a Novel that served as
a basis for this thesis’ materials

The basis of this thesis was a Novel titled “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”
written by Jules Verne, it consists of 408 Pages and 44 Chapters. The writer
would attempt to write down and discuss about the intrinsic elements that were
present in this novel, including; 1) Plot; 2)Characters; 3)Setting; 4)Point of View

x
It told the story of a young boy, who lives with his uncle, a German Archaeologist,
all of his life, he has lived with his uncle, often getting involved in his mad
researches. Until one day, a maddening discovery would take him and his uncle to
a journey that they would never forget, a journey to the centre of the earth.

This thesis would break down this specific form of literature using what was
called a “qualitative method” meaning this thesis will use a set of pre-written data
that would serve as a basis for this thesis’ contents, by reading the full contents of
this book, writing down points of interest and important set pieces, characters, and
plot points that were true and accurate to the contents of the book, and inserting it
in a table with that specific elements’ page and sentence that indicated said
element, and arranging it in a way that was comprehensible to the general
populace.

After thorough research, the writer has found that this novel was told through a
first person point of view, in order to capture the feeling that this novel was the
protagonist’s journal, published to the general public, it contained 2 protagonists,
with some notable side characters that were crucial to the story, the first one was
Harry, a child prodigy who often questions his uncle’s research, the second one
was Harry’s uncle, Professor Hardwigg, who had a deep curiosity in everything,
often leading to him making reckless decisions, a few characters that were worth
mentioning included the prideful but responsible M. Fridriksson and the
optimistic sailor, Capt. Bjarne

The writer had also found out that the story initially took place in an unspecified
town somewhere in germany, before setting off to Iceland, there the protagonist
visited a very notable landmark, Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland.

xi
All in all, this novel was a product of combined efforts of interesting characters, a
solid plot, an atmospheric First person PoV and a very scenic place, this novel
was full of life lessons that we can take away from the characters, such as the
importance of family, and the pursuit of knowledge. This novel was a great classic
that would greatly amuse literature enthusiasts

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the study

A novel is a fictitious work of narrative of considerable length and
complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequential
organization of actions and scenes, a novel usually contains fictitious
elements, i.e. magic, fictional beings brought to life, and a dark force
opposing all that is holy, the situations portrayed in such novels are often
times ridiculous, but such scenarios – if treated and explored correctly – can
make for a very suspenseful, action-packed, sweat-enducing, and sometimes
tear-jerking storyline, with each chapter keeping you at the edge of your seat,
with a cast of complex characters of whom you will come to love (or hate).
Such fictitious works can often contain the “what if?” question, often
presenting scenarios that questions the outcome of certain scenarios, and if a
different outcome is possible by orchestrating a certain chain of events,
these scenarios often contain events that has happened before, like World
War 2, the Bubonic Plague, the French Revolution, and many more. But the
one that has piqued my interest the most is the novel “Journey to the Centre
of the Earth” by Jules Verne, in which He asks the question “what if
someone were to somehow find a way into the interior of the Earth? What
secrets would he find along the way? And when he does find the interior of
the earth, what would he do next?” technically, one could dig his way to the
centre of the earth, but no one – not even mining corporations – would even
think of digging into the unknown and possibly lose a ton of their budget,
even more so when faced with the risk of not finding anything worth selling.
So the next best thing would be to imagine what could be found beneath the
surface of the earth and beyond, and this novel is a perhaps the most
liberating answer to that question. That and I’d like to think that after

1
2

reading this novel, someone, somewhere in the world is trying to dig his
way into the Earth without regards to his wallet.
1.2. Statement of the Problem
A novel must contain some elements in it which represents the main focus
of a character, place, time, or setting. The question is how do we analyze
one? And how many elements can we find during analysis?
1.3. Limitation of the Study
This thesis will also include boundaries of research :
1. I will only be discussing the intrinsic elements of this book
2. This thesis will be covering 44 chapters out of 44
1.4. Purpose of the Study
1.4.1. General Purpose
This thesis is written to fulfill a requirement to continue studying to
grade XII
1.4.2. Secondary Purpose
This thesis is written to know how to identify the setting,
characterization, place, and time of the novel “journey to the centre
of the earth” and to find as much of these elements as possible
1.5. Significance of the Study
1.5.1. For the Writer
1. To get a better understanding of how to properly analyze intrinsic
elements
2. As a way to challenge the writer
3. As another way to apply the writer’s skills into something of
significance
1.5.2. For the Readers
1. To provide a media for studying English
2. To make them learn how to appreciate literature
3. To make them be able to notice an intrinsic element just by taking
a slight glancefinition of key terms
3

1.6. Definition of key terms

1. Intrinsic : according to the Merriam-webster dictionary, a belonging to
the essential nature or constitution of a thing
2. Literary element : according to Wikipedia, a constituent of all works
of narrative fiction – a necessary feature of verbal storytelling that can
be found in any written or spoken narrative
3. Fiction : according to the Cambridge dictionary, the type of book that
is written about imaginary characters and events, not based on real
people and facts
CHAPTER II
REVIEW TO LITERATURE

2.1. Novel
2.1.1. Meaning
According to Margaret Doody, the novel constitutes "a continuous
and comprehensive history of about two thousand years", with its
origins in the Ancient Greek and Roman novel, in Chivalric romance,
and in the tradition of the Italian renaissance novella. The ancient
romance form as revived by Romanticism, especially the historical
romances of Walter Scott and the Gothic novel. Some, including M.
H. Abrams anWalter Scott, have argued that a novel is a fiction
narrative that displays a realistic depiction of the state of a society,
while the romance encompasses any fictitious narrative that
emphasizes marvellous or uncommon incidents.
In short, a novel is a work of fiction of book length. that tells
a continuous story involving a character, or a group, as they try to
find a solution to an arising problem, completely unheard of, which
in turn triggers the event of the novel. Despite this, novels often
retain some realism to them. Such works of fiction can be so long,
that they often have to be split into separate books, often stretching
into anthologies.

2.1.2. Types/Genresof Novels

Novels are a type of literature, therefore novels must have a wide
variety of genres to choose from to cater for such a huge
demographic of literature enthusiasts, here are some of the most
popular genres

4
5

1. Crime : mysteries often involves the unknown, or the unsolved.

Whether that be a murder case, a missing person, or even the
supernatural. The plot always follows an amateur detective.
2. Science-fiction : This genre – arguably – possesses the most
fanbase. This genre – often shortened as “sci-fi” – often tackles
“what if?” scenarios. Like, what if the earth had died out and
humanity had to venture out into space to colonize other planets?
What if A.I. started to become intelligent and deem humanity as
obselete? Or what could possibly be at the very bottom of the
earth? These are all questions that we sometimes ask ourselves.
Given that we have no means of actually finding the answers to
these questions, this genre exists to serve such purpose.
3. Fantasy : Fantasy is similar to Science-Fiction, where the two
genres tackle imaginary scenarios. The two genres differentiate
themselves by their approach of the human imagination, whereas
sci-fi has a more logical and theoretical approach with support
from existing real life principles, Fantasy steers clear of scientific
and macabre themes,
4. Romance : Romance is a genre which follows the budding
romance of two people as they try to approach and cross all
obstacles in the name of love. A popular example of this genre
would be Romeo & Juliet. Usually it involves a man and a
woman, but in recent times, the orientation has varied.
5. Horror : A genre whose sole purpose is to frighten or disgust the
readers. Although it often involves the supernatural, it is not
required. Early horror stories take inspiration from romanticism
and gothic fiction, but modern horror, such as cosmic horror and
splatterpunk tends to be less melodramatic and more explicit. It is
not uncommon for this genre to be mixed with other genres
6

2.1.3. Elements of a Novel

Every novel has it’s building blocks, and these elements are the
building blocks of every novel. Because of a novel’s capability to
become a long term series, these elements can often turn out quite
complex, and could evolve and turn in different directions. This is
what we call “development” where a certain element is changed to
accommodate for the story, this includes the plot, the characters, the
settings, and even the point of view.
2.2. Elements
No good novels are written without a neatly packed ensemble of these
elements, these elements are actively tied to one another, and if one fails to
deliver, then down goes the others.
1. Plot
The plot is the overall story of the novel, neatly arranged to fulfil the
purpose of enticing the reader to buy the book, sit down with a cup of
tea, with a blanket, and enjoy a good book on a Sunday night.
2. Character
Characters also helps to build up the world and plot, because the
behaviour of a character will affect how he will approach an event in
the plot. Many great characters are often remembered through their
specific traits. For example, James Bond. Because of the way he shakes
his martini, his occupation, and his womanizer attitude, another one
would be L. Lawliet from the novel L : change the World with his
abnormal case of sweet tooth, also the way he sits, he often squats
despite being on a chair most of the time also his way of picking things
up, and also his abnormally large eyes and almost deadpan stare. The
point is, make your characters great by giving them a distinct look,
behaviour, and eating habits if you must. But also, give them depth so
they’re not just one dimensional.
3. Setting
7

Settings of a story is very important, whether that be your characters’

traits, the time of day, the location, the incident that has just been
caused. All of this will contribute to creating an immersive atmosphere,
making the story more enjoyable.
4. Point of View (PoV)
Point of view (PoV) is the perspective in which the writer or the
narrator chooses to tell the story from, this is very important because an
inconsistency in POV could lead to confusion. Because if the narrator
knows what’s going to happen next, and then say “i did not expect this”
then that would contradict the chosen POV altogether.
Some of these PoVs include :
- First person
First person means that the story is being told to the readers
through the eyes of the characters, an example of this would be
Brandon Sandersons’ The Reckoners trilogy, where in all three
instalments, the story is being told through the eyes of said book’s
protagonist, David Charleston.
- Second person
Second person is the most uncommon method of telling a story in
fiction . In this type of PoV, the narrator speaks directly to YOU.
This type of PoV is more commonly seen in speeches, poems, and
instruction manuals
- Third person
With the third person point of view, the narrator is describing the
story to us as a spectator. This narrator has 3 possible perspectives
• Limited : the narrator only describes what he/she sees in front of
him/her, a spectator of events as they watch the story unfold,
unable to predict what comes after.
• Omniscient : the narrator is basically god. He sees everything,
he knows everything that has and will happen
8

• Limited omniscience : limited omniscience is almost the same as

omniscience, being that both can see into things that would
otherwise be unknown to the naked eye. The difference lies in
the range, limited omniscience means that the narrator could
only see so much of what’s going to happen, like tapping into
the character’s inner thoughts.

CHAPTER III
METHOD OF RESEARCH

Type of Research
This thesis’ method of research falls into the category of descriptive
qualitative research, Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing
non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts,
opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a
problem or generate new ideas for research. (Pritha Bhandari, 2020)
3.1. Location and Time of Research
3.1.1. Location of Research
Due to the current pandemic, which has prompted the government to
carry out a lockdown. This research will be carried out in the privacy
of the writer’s own home. The writer will remain in his house in
complete isolation.
3.1.2. Time of Research
This research will be conducted from the 22nd of December, 2020 to
the 4th of February, 2021.
3.2. Population and Sample of Research
3.2.1. Population
A population is the entire group that you want to draw conclusions
about. In research, a population doesn’t always refer to people. It can
mean a group containing elements of anything you want to study,
such as objects, events, organizations, countries, species, etc. (Pritha
Bhandari, 2020)
The population of this research is the novel “Journey to the Centre of
the Earth”
3.2.2. Sample

10
11

A sample is the specific group that you will collect data from. The
size of the sample is always less than the total size of the population
(Pritha Bhandari, 2020)
The sample of this Research includes 400 pages of the novel
“Journey to the Centre of the Earth”
3.3. Method of Research
The method of gathering data for this thesis includes Reading and Writing
3.3.1. Reading
This method of Research involves reading the whole story in each
chapter from start to finish, this method may take more than 1
attempt to get the most accurate data as possible.
3.3.2. Writing
This method involves writing down parts of the source material that
could be viable as research material, this method will be useful for
the purpose of re-evaluation for this thesis, should the need arise.
3.4. Procedure of Research
3.4.1. Phase of Research
Preparing sufficient source material

Reading the source material

3.5. Instrument of Research
This research will involve the many intrinsic elements of the novel “Journey
to the Centre of the Earth, the instrument involved in this procedure is a
research table, for which the writer will write down the cited source of each
element one by one.

DATA OF AN ALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

4.1. Data of Analysis and Discussion

After extensive research on the novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”
the writer has achieved results as written below :
Plot :
- based on the novel “journey to the centre of the earth” the plot follows a
young boy named harry who currently lives with his uncle, Professor
Hardwigg, he also serves as his personal assistant in his archeological
endeavours. One day, Professor Hardwigg found a manuscript written
in runic Icelandic, something that he finds peculiar, he deducted that
whatever is written in that manuscript could lead to a great discovery,
prompting him to not stop working until the content of said manuscript
is deciphered. Weeks they have spent on deciphering said manuscript,
but little progress has been made in translating the ancient runic
alphabet, they’ve only found a name “Arne Saknussemm”. Harry then
decided to take it upon himself to translate the manuscript, and to his
joy, he managed to translate it using unorthodox methods, but what he
woud find written on the text would be less joyous, it reads of a journey
so horrifying, so mortifying, no man would dare to take the journey and
frankly no one should. He planed to burn the manuscript, so that his
uncle would never find out, but he found out anyway. Knowing that his
uncle would not let up, he decided that it would be better to accompany
him, and so they embark on a journey that Harry and his uncle would
remember for their whole lives, a journey to the centre of the earth.

Life Lessons
18

- From Professor Hardwigg : it’s okay to take extreme interest in

something, and to pursue it further, but be aware of who it would
affect, and how it would affect your behaviour, and to also have
complete faith in your companion(s) skills, and to always let other
people judge for themselves of another person’s worth. If they wish
to do so.
- From Harry : as the next generation of leaders, we should strive to
be as knowledgeable as Harry, and to find creative ways to solve a
problem, we should also know when to back down from a
dangerous situation, and also to actively prevent your loved ones
from making reckless decisions.
- From Capt, Bjarn : the Captain’s optimistic outlook on life is a very
impressive one, and is a very rare quality nowadays. With that kind
of outlook on life, no matter how bleak the situation is, we won’t
ever give up hope.
- From M. Fridriksson : this man has his priorities straight, his
awareness of what is important can prevent him from making bad
decisions, who knows what could’ve happened to him if he head
followed Prof.Hardwigg’s journey, this awareness is what we need
as students.

Conclusion

- As a human being, especially a teenager, we should strive to

become as knowledgeable and creative, while also remaining
sensible and responsible to what has been handed to us, we must
also remain optimistic and have a deep curiosity for anything that
interests us and leads us to a better life.
