Group Activity
• Form a set of ordered pairs that will satisfy the following
conditions:
Group 1: (animal, offspring)
Example: (goat, kid)
Group 2: (planet, number of moons)
Example: (Earth, 1)
Group 3: (country, capital)
Example: (Japan, Tokyo)
Group 4: (animal, name of grouping)
Example: (sheep, flock)
Group 5: (name of group member, age)
• Present the relation in arrow diagram
• Each group will present their output to the class.
REPRESENTING
FUNCTIONS
UNIT 1.1
WHAT ARE A relation is a set of ordered
RELATIONS?
pairs that represent a
relationship.

Example:
Names and their age are a
set of ordered pairs that Name Alex Jude Arlo Casey
we could put into a table.
Age 9 12 11 11
WHAT IS A FUNCTION?
• A function is a special type of
relation where each input has only
one output.
• A function is defined as “a
relation in which each element
of the domain corresponds to
exactly one element of the
range”.
• The relation is a function if, for every
x-value, there is exactly one y-
value.
WHAT IS A FUNCTION?
Functions are a way of connecting input
values to their corresponding output values.
Example:
Ordering a coffee for ₱40

Pay ₱40, and you get 1 coffee.

Pay ₱80, and you'll get 2 coffees, and
so on.
The input affects the output in a predictable way.
FUNTION RULE

DOMAIN FUNCTION RULE RANGE

(Set of Inputs) (Rule of Correspondence) (Set of Outputs)
FUNCTION MACHINE
The figure shows how a
function machine works. An input x
is entered into the machine, then
the machine processes it by
performing operations defined by
the function f on the input, and that
gives a result as an output, f(x). This
special relationship guarantees that
for every input, there is a unique
output from the machine.
FUNCTION NOTATION

𝒇 𝒙 =𝒚

Common Mistake!! o read as “f of x is equal to y”

𝑓(𝑥) does NOT imply
multiplication. We are not multiplying
the variables 𝑓 and 𝑥. it as a “married”
symbol; they should not be brought
apart.
DOMAIN & RANGE OF A FUNCTION

The domain of a function is the set of

all possible values for the independent
variable 𝑥, while the range of a function
is the set of all possible values for the
dependent variable 𝑦.
EXAMPLE!
Identify the domain, function rule, and
the range of the following:
EXAMPLE: SOLUTION:
a. The volume of

Function Rule:

b. A jeepney
passenger pays b. Domain: 𝒅|𝒅 > 𝟎

km fare, and an 𝟖 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝟎 < 𝒅 ≤ 𝟓
𝑭 𝒅 =ቊ

additional ₱0.50
for every Range:
₱8, ₱8.50, ₱𝟗, ₱9.50,₱10, …
succeeding
distance d in
kilometer.
EXAMPLE: SOLUTION:
c. The interest earned by a
principal invested at 5% a. Domain: 𝑷|𝑷 > 𝟎
compounded annually Function Rule:
for 3 years is computed 𝒊 = 𝑷(𝟎. 𝟎𝟓)(𝟑)
using the relation Range: 𝒊|𝒊 > 𝟎
𝒊 = 𝑷𝒓𝒕, where 𝒊 is the
interest, 𝑷 is the principal, 𝒓
is the rate, and 𝒕 is the time.
DEFINITION OF PIECEWISE FUNCTION

A piecewise function or a compound

function is a function defined by multiple
subfunctions, where each subfunction
applies to a certain interval of the main
function domain.

function rule, and the set of
