Figure 1-5 AAU function implementation

An AAU performs the following functions:

● Receives downlink baseband data from the BBU and sends uplink baseband
data to the BBU.
● On the RX channel, receives RF signals through the antenna and feeder,
down-converts the RF signals into intermediate frequency (IF) signals,
amplifies them, and performs analog-to-digital conversion. On the transmit
channel, filters signals, performs digital-to-analog conversion, and up-
converts the RF signals to the TX band.
● Multiplexes RX and TX signals, which enables these signals to share the same
antenna channel. It also filters the RX and TX signals.
● Transmits or receives radio waves and forms beams.
An AU performs the following functions:
● Provides AU arrays, RF combination, feed power, phase-shift network, and
drive system.
● Provides a built-in remote control unit (RCU) to control circuits.
● Reports information about the AU capability and RU in-position status.
● Provides the power supplying channel and communication ports between the
RU and the MU.
● Provides ports for AAU mounting kits.
An MU performs the following functions:

AAU3902
Hardware Description 1 AAU3902 Hardware Description

● Provides a –48 V DC power port.

● Provides CPRI ports to converge and distribute CPRI signals.
● Provides protection and filtering functions.
● Provides operation and management of the AAU and management of the
RUs.
An RU performs the following functions:
● Performs down-conversion, amplification, and analog-to-digital conversion for
RF signals through the RX channel.
● Performs filtering, digital-to-analog conversion, and up-conversion for
downlink signals through the TX channel.
● Multiplexes RX signals and TX signals on the RF channel.
● Provides active antenna calibration and compensation and parameter
configuration.
● Exchanges data between the AU and MU.
A CU performs the following function:
Protects a vacant slot from dust and water.

1.2.6 AAU RET System

The remote electrical tilt (RET) system of an AAU consists of the remote control
unit (RCU), motor, gearing, and phase shifter. In the RET system, the RCU is used
to remotely adjust the downtilts of AU beams.

RET Function
The RCU receives the control signals from the base station and drives the gearing
inside the AU through the step motor to drive the phase shifter in the AU,
adjusting the downtilt of the AU.

RCU RET consists of the following:

● Internal control: Signals are received through CPRI ports on an MU, as shown
in the following figure.

Figure 1-10 RCU internal control

● External control: Signals are received through AISG ports at the bottom of an
AU, as shown in the following figure.

Issue 10 (2021-06-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 17

AAU3902
Hardware Description 1 AAU3902 Hardware Description

Figure 1-11 RCU external control

There are three arrays in an AAU, including active high-frequency AU array,

passive low-frequency AU array, and passive high-frequency AU array. The RCU
RET has the following characteristics:
● The three AU arrays are independently controlled by the RCU.
● The active high-frequency AU array supports only internal control mode.
● The two passive AU arrays support both internal and external control modes.
● In external control mode, the RET port does not support OOK signals.
Therefore, if OOK signals are transmitted, an SBT must be installed to
separate OOK signals from the combined signals and convert the OOK signals
to RS485 signals.

RCU Serial Number

The following figure shows the positions and silkscreens of the three RCU serial
numbers on an AAU.

field

Year 1 It represents the year in which the product is produced.

One character is used to represent the last two digits of
a year.
For example, the last two digits of the years 2001 to
2009 are represented by the characters 1 to 9,
respectively. The letters from A to Z are used to
represent the years starting from year 2010. The letter
A represents 2010 and the subsequent letters represent
the years following 2010. To avoid confusing O, I, and Z
with 0, 1, and 2, skip these letters.

Month 1 It represents the month in which the product is

produced. Hexadecimal is adopted.
For example, characters 1 to 9 represent January to
September, respectively. A represents October, B
represents November, and C represents December.

number

DIN 1 It represents the position of the RF ports which are

position counted from the bottom of the AU.
0 represents the bottom of the AU. The digits 1 and 3
are reserved.

Array 1 0 represents the low-frequency (790 MHz to 960 MHz)

position array, and 1 represents the high-frequency (1710 MHz
to 2690 MHz) array.

RET Configuration Principles

The RET configuration principles are as follows:

Issue 10 (2021-06-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 19

AAU3902
Hardware Description 1 AAU3902 Hardware Description

NOTE

For descriptions of the RET solution for the AAU and detailed engineering guidelines, see GSM
BSS AAU Feature Parameter Description, WCDMA RAN AAU Feature Parameter Description, or
eRAN AAU Feature Parameter Description.
● The RET port inside the AU can scan any RCU serial number carrying no link.
The RET port on the bottom of the AU only can scan the RCU serial number
carrying no link corresponding to passive arrays.
● Links are not prioritized, and the first-come first-served principle applies to
the links. Only one AISG link can be established for an RCU serial number. If a
link needs to be switched, you must delete the configuration on the link so
that the link can be released.
● After an RCU link is established, the corresponding RCU serial number is not
displayed in the scanning result of other RET ports.

1.2.7 Optical Modules

An optical module transmits optical signals between an optical port and an optical
fiber.
Optical modules of various types must be used in pairs on both ends of an optical
fiber. The following table describes the mapping.

NOTICE

● Each type of optical module has its own mapping. If different types of optical
modules are used, performance risks may arise, for example, alarms, bit errors,
and interrupted links.
● To ensure that optical modules are connected and working properly, Huawei
equipment must be used with the original optical modules. As the compatibility
and quality of third-party optical modules cannot be guaranteed, using such
modules may cause connection exceptions or even damage to the main
equipment.

maximum distance supported by an AAU power cable is 100 m (328.08 ft).

NOTE

If the power equipment is provided by the customer:

● When a single RU is configured, circuit breakers of 20 A are recommended for the
power equipment.
● When two RUs are configured, circuit breakers of 30 A are recommended for the
power equipment.

Exterior

A single-mode optical fiber consists of a single-mode pigtail and a trunk single-
mode optical cable, which are connected through an optical distribution frame
(ODF). A single-mode pigtail is 20 m (65.62 ft) and 70 m (229.66 ft) long at most
on the BBU and AAU sides, respectively.

1.3.7 AISG Multi-Wire Cable

An AISG multi-wire cable connects an RRU and an AAU to transmit control signals
from a base station to an RET antenna. When the RRU is connected to the RET
antenna, an AISG multi-wire cable transmits RS485 signals. The length of an AISG
multi-wire cable is 5 m (16.40 ft).

NOTE

● An AAU contains built-in RCUs.

● An RCU is a driving motor used for the phase shifter in the RET antenna. It receives
control commands from a base station and runs commands to drive the step motor.
Using a gear, the step motor drives the adjustable phase shifter in the antenna to
change the downtilt of the antenna.
