Rational Inequality
A rational inequality is an inequality that
contains a rational expression
Rational Inequality
It is a rational expression combines with
any of these inequality symbols;
≥ ,≤ , < , or >
EXAMPLE
2x+10
≥ 1
x+3
3x-15
≤ 5-x
x
INTERVAL AND SET NOTATION
An inequality may have infinitely many solutions. The set
of all solutions can be expressed using set notation or
interval notations
Set Notation Interval Notation
Uses sets to say explicitly where Used parenthesis or brackets to
the function is or isn’t defined. imply where the function is.
D:{x|x=0} D : (- ∞ , 0 ) U ( 0 , ∞ )
The domain is from negative infinity to less
The domain is set of all real numbers
than zero and from greater than 0 to
x, such as x is not equal to zero positive infinity

Ex
If -2 < x < 2 Interval : ( -2 , 2 )
Set notation : { x | -2 < x < 2 }
-2 2
PROCEDURE FOR SOLVING RATIONAL
INEQUALITIES
1.
Rewrite the inequality as a single fraction on one
side of the inequality symbol and 0 on the other
side and solve.
2. Determine over what intervals the fraction takes
on positive and negative values.
Mark the numbers found in (i) on a number line. Us a
3. shaded circle to indicate that the value is included in
the solution set and hollow circle to indicate that the
value iiis excluded.
Select a test point within the interior of each interval in
4. step 3. The sign of the rational expression at this test
point is also the sign of the rational expression at each
interior point in the intervalz.
5. Summarize the interval containing the solutions.
Take note
It is NOT VALID to multiple both sides of an inequality by a
variable
Multiplying both sides of an inequality by a positive
numbers RETAINS the direction of the inequality
Multiplying both sides of an inequality by negative
numbers REVERSES the direction of the inequality
Since the sign of a variable is unknown, then it is not valid to multiply
both sides of an inequality by a variable
Example
x-7
< 0
x+3
Result
x-7=0
x+3=0
x=7
x=-3
Example
2x+10
≥ 1
x+3
Result
2x+10 2x+10
≥ 1 -1 ≥ 0
x+3 x+3
2x+10-x-3 2x+10-1(x+3) ≥ 0
≥0
x+3 x+3
Result
2x+10-x-3
≥ 0
x+3
2x-x+10-3
≥ 0
x+3
x+7
≥ 0
x+3
Result
x+7=0
x+3=0
x=-7
x=-3
