Chemsheets As 1038 Le Chatelier 1

Le Chatelier's principle states that if a stress is applied to a system at equilibrium, the equilibrium will shift to reduce the effect of the stress. Specifically: - For an endothermic reaction, increasing temperature shifts the equilibrium right to counteract the increase in temperature. Increasing pressure shifts the equilibrium left as there are fewer moles of gas on the left side. - For an exothermic reaction, increasing temperature shifts the equilibrium left to counteract the temperature increase. Increasing pressure has no effect as there are an equal number of moles of gas on both sides of the equilibrium. - These principles can be applied to predict how changing temperature and pressure will impact the yield of hydrogen

LE CHATELIER’S PRINCIPLE 1

1) Complete the table to show what would happen to the position of the following gas phase equilibria if the following
changes were made. Tick the correct column in each case.

Increase temperature Increase pressure

Equilibrium Energy change
moves no move moves no move
(forward reaction) left move right left move right

A(g) + 2 B(g) ⇌ X(g) + Z(g) exothermic

P(g) + Q(g) ⇌ 2 X(g) endothermic

A2(g) ⇌ X(g) + Z(g) exothermic

2 P(g) ⇌ 2 C(g) + D(g) endothermic

2) The hydrogen used in the Haber process is made in the reaction shown below, which is an equilibrium.
CH4(g) + H2O(g) ⇌ CO(g) + 3 H2(g) ∆H = +206 kJ/mol

a) i) If the temperature of this equilibrium was increased, what would happen to the yield of hydrogen?
it will increase
-----------------------------------------------

ii) Explain your reasoning. ------------------------------------

because when increasing the temperature, the equilibrium position moves to the right in endothermic reaction
-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

b) i) If the pressure of this equilibrium was increased, what would happen to the yield of hydrogen?

it will decrease ----------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

ii) Explain your reasoning. ------------------------------------

the equilibrium position moves to the side with fewer gas molecules, i.e. to the left
-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

3) Hydrogen can also be made in the reaction shown below.

CO(g) + H2O(g) ⇌ CO2(g) + H2(g) ∆H = –42 kJ/mol

a) i) If the temperature of this equilibrium was increased, what would happen to the yield of hydrogen?
it will decrease
-----------------------------------------------

ii) Explain your reasoning. ------------------------------------

because when increasing the temperature, the equilibrium position moves to the left in exothermic reaction
-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

b) i) If the pressure of this equilibrium was increased, what would happen to the yi
yield
eld of hydrogen?
no change
-----------------------------------------------

ii) Explain your reasoning. ------------------------------------

because number of gaseous molecules are equal on both sides
