Workflow to Prepare and Cut Curb Ramp Detail Sheets using
MicroStation CONNECT
The steps outlined below will cover the main steps to use MicroStation CONNECT in a CONNECT
Design Platform project in ProjectWise, to cut sheets for Curb Ramp Detail drawings in a Detail
Sheets document.
Prepare the CAD Base File
The CAD Base file should be created in the 3_Base_files folder with a model named Base_Refs.
Base_Refs should have direct reference attachments to all design base models necessary for
plan sheet and detail sheet creation.
Create the Detail Sheet File and the Named Boundaries Model
Use Document>New>Advanced Wizard… in ProjectWise and select Seed2D.dgn from the
CAD_Resources\Seed folder as the template. On the Document Naming Tool page of the
wizard, add the extension .dgn to the Document Name field before clicking [Next >].
In ProjectWise, right-click on the file and select “Open With…” from the pop up menu. On the
Open document with dialog, select MicroStation CONNECT Edition, then click [OK].
In MicroStation CONNECT, open the Models dialog and click the Create Model icon. Choose a
Type of “Design From Seed”, which should automatically use the Default model of Seed2D.dgn.
Name this model Named Boundaries and set the Annotation Scale to the intended print scale –
something like, 1”=10’.
Prepare the Named Boundaries Model
In the Named Boundaries model, attach a reference to the Base_Refs model of the CAD Base
file. Set the Nested Attachments setting to “Live Nesting” and set the Nesting Depth to “1”.
Zoom in to the intersection area, adjust the level and reference display for the curb ramp
details, then place borderfull cells and rotate the cells to the orientation of the intended sheets.
Clip shape cells can be found in the ODOT Plan Sheet Creation ribbon workflow and the Sheet
Borders group.
Do not be concerned that the clip shape cells overlap. The cells are compose entirely of
construction class elements which may be toggled off for display in the View Attributes and will
not print using ODOT’s print styles.
Place the Named Boundaries
Set the active level to S_NamedBoundary. Using the View tab of the Drawing ribbon workflow,
select “Place Named Boundary”. Set the tool settings of the Place Named Boundary command
as shown on the picture below.
It is important that the “Detail Scale” match the intended print scale; uncheck “Create
Drawing” in order to place more than one boundary.
It is fastest method to place rotated named boundaries is to use AccuDraw and AccuSnap. Click
into the AccuDraw window to give AccuDraw the focus. Hover the mouse over the lower left
corner of the first cell that was placed, and when AccuSnap displays the yellow X, type an <o>
key on the keyboard to set the origin for AccuDraw. Next, use the Rotate Quick shortcut key-in
by typing <r><q> on keyboard and select the lower right corner of the cell.
That will rotate the named boundary to align with the cell. Set AccuSnap to the midpoint snap
and finally select the midpoint along the left edge of the cell to place the named boundary.
Use the “Place Named Boundary” command three more times – each time setting the Name to
the intended name of the sheet and the Group to the previously created group Curb Ramps.
Cut the Sheets
Launch the Named Boundaries dialog from the small icon in the lower right corner of the
Named Boundaries group. Select the group, right-click and choose “Create Drawing” to open
the Create Drawing dialog.
The only setting change that is necessary on the Create Drawing dialog is to set the Annotation
Scale for the Drawing Model to match the intended print scale.
With “Open Model” checked on – clicking [OK] will create the drawing and sheet models in the
Detail Sheets file. The last sheet model created will automatically be opened. The picture
below shows the sheet, the reference to the design, the title block, and drawing aids that are
available.
In the image of the sheet, the curved red lines of the design reference data can be seen along
the left side. A red arrow points to a construction cell with guidelines for adjusting boundaries.
A yellow highlight shows the title block cell that is placed in the sheet. A red rectangle outlines
the callout below the sheet and the menu that appears when the mouse hovers over the
callout.
Adjusting Named Boundaries
The easiest method of adjusting the reference clipping in the sheet is to use the Callout to open
the “Named Boundaries” model and adjust the named boundary there.
The picture below shows the design model already oriented to the sheet. The “borderfull” cell
was placed in the “Named Boundaries” model and the construction guidelines are available for
snap points.
The Modify command can be used to adjust the boundary to leave space at the right for notes.
Previous View Group can be used to re-open the Sheet model to see that there is now space for
notes on the right side above the title block.
