a. Semi modal « used to » :


 Expresses habit in the past
 It can be replaced by : had the habit to +stem or had the habit of + verb+ ing
 Negative form : didn’t use to/ hadn’t the habit to
Eg : people had the habit to wear traditional clothes in occasions
People used to wear traditional clothes in occasions
b. Had to :
 Expresses obligation in the past
 It can be replaced with : was or were obliged to/ was or were forced to
 Negative form : didn’t have to, wasn’t or weren’t obliged to
Eg : People had to work their lands to get food

c. Were able to :
 Expresses ability in the past
 It can be replaced with : managed to/ could/ was or were capable to

Expressing time with as soon as, before, after, until and when

Tenses needed : Past simple (verb+ed if it is regular)


Past perfect (had+ past participle)

 If students are suppoed to link sintences with a connector of time they have to find action 1
first
Rules :
a. After, as soon as , when + subject+ past perfect+ subject+ past simple
b. Before + subject + past simple+ subject+ past perfect
c. Until ( in the middle) subject+ didn’t +stem+ until+subject + past perfect

 Ps : if the subject is the same, students have to write a word that can refer to in the second
action to avoid repetition
Eg : Sumerians invented new irrigation systems. Sumerians failed in agriculture
Students have to identify action 1, subjects and verbs
- Before sumerians invented new irrigation, they had failed in agriculture
- After Sumerians had failed in agriculture, they invented new irrigation system
- Sumerians didn’t invent new irrigation system until they had failed in agriculture

Expressing concession (In spite of/ Despite)


Connectors : however, whereas, although, though, eventhough, but, unlike, while+ subject + verb (no
changes)
- But is put in the middle

 We can use : In spite of and Despite but with necessary changes


+ ing form (verb+ing) or noun phrase

 In spite of the fact that and despite of the fact that have the same work as the connectors
above (but, although ………….) no changes
Eg : Sumerian civilization witnessed great amount of achievements. Sumerian civilzation callapsed
- Although Sumerian civilization witnessed great amount of achievements, it callapsed
- In spite of the great amount of achievements, Sumerian civilization callapsed (noun phrase)
- Despite witnessing a great amount of achievements, Sumerian civilization callapsed (ing
form)

Forming nouns and adjectives / forming opposies with


prefixes
Nouns : we use suffixes (tion, ment, y(ity, phy, gy, cy), ist, ence,ance)
Adjectives : we use suffixes (ive, ed, able, full, less, call, ic, ible…)
We can use prefixes to form opposites keeping the same root as : im, ir, il, un, in, dis, mis
Under and inter are considered as prefixes but not for forming opposites

Stress Shift

► If the words ending with: tion, sion, ssion, ic ,


the stress is put on the second from the end
► If the words ending with: cal, gy, cy, ity, y, phy the stress is put on the third syllable from the
end
► When you have a noun with its adjective you will notice that the stress is shift from a syllable
to the next one in the adjective. Eg: technology technological

Suggested introduction that can be written in any topic of civilization (adding just the topic done
in the subject)

Thousands of years ago, there were many major civilization in the word. Most of them were
know by their growth and development in all fields of history. All civilizations went through three
steps: rise, flourish and collapse and they were all rose along rivers.

Suggested conclusion:

To sum up we can say that all civilizations left a big thumb in history and they made great
contributions to the development of today’s world, the reason why we have to protect them because
they are considered as the identity of any country.
