Culture
A “complex whole” which encompasses beliefs,
practices, traits, values, attitudes, laws, norms,
artifacts, symbols, knowledge, and everything
that a person learns and shares as a member of
the society.
“Complex whole” – suggests
that culture cannot be simply
broken down into a set of
characteristics.

Culture
Material Culture

and visible parts of
culture.

societies, differ as each
society is configured by its
environment and history.
Non - Material Culture
▪ Includes all intangible
parts of the culture.

knowledge

Characteristics
of Culture
Culture is learned
Culture is a set of beliefs, attitudes, and
practices that an individual learns
through his or her family, school, church,
and other social institutions.
Enculturation
▪The process of learning
your own culture
▪You learn the values
and accepted
behaviors in your
society
Acculturation
▪Due to constant
interaction between
societies, culture
can be modified to
accommodate
desirable trait from
other cultures
Culture is shared
The set of behaviors attitudes, and beliefs that a
person possesses is part of a greater collection
of values and ideas that is communally owned
and practiced by the member of a society.
Culture affects biology
Humans are born into cultures that have
values on beauty and body. They alter
their bodies to fit into the physiological
norms that are dictated by culture.

Culture is a tool for survival that humans
use in response to the pressures of their
environment.

Society
Society
Refers to people who live in a defined
territory and share a way of life or culture.
Derived from the latin word “Societas”,
which means companion or associate.
Characteristics
of Society
1. It is a social system

individuals
interacting with
each other
2. It is relatively large
▪ The people must be
socially integrated to
be considered
relatively large than if
the people are
individually scattered
3. It socializes its members
▪ Since most of
society’s members
are born to it, they
are taught the
basic norms and
expectations.
4. It endures, produce, and sustain the
members for generation
▪ For the society to
survive, it must have
the ability to
produce, endure, and
sustain its new
member for the latest
several generation
5. It holds its member through a
common culture
▪ The individuals in a
society are held together

vision and mission
Sources of Change
in Society
1. Conflict
▪ Inequalities based on
class, race, gender,
religion, and more
foster dissatisfaction
and anger.

▪ When the demographic

changes, social change
is inevitable.
