Nationals come up short in first tune-up
game
The national women’s volleyball team absorbed a five-set defeat at
the hands of Thailand U-23 team.
The national women’s volleyball team had a great start only to falter in the end as the
Filipinas fell short in their first of a series of tune-up games in their training camp in
Bangkok, Thailand.
The Thailand U-23 team dealt the Nationals a 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 13-15, loss
on Monday at the FIVB-Development Center.
All of the 10 members of the squad who were already in Thailand saw minutes on the
floor as the Nationals took the first two sets before the host university team regrouped to
steal the match from the Filipinas, who are preparing for the ASEAN Grand Prix in
Nakhon Ratchasima on Sept. 20.
Thailand’s powerhouse senior squad will host the Filipinas on Tuesday at the Sports
Authority of Thailand (SAT) Gym. The PHI team will then take on Thailand's U23
national team on Sept. 11.
On Sept. 12, Bangkok University will play the Nationals and on Sept. 15, the Filipinas
will face Japan's V-League runner-up Toray Arrows, who also bagged the championship
of 2018-19 All-Japan Kurowashiki tournament.
Already in Thailand are skipper Aby Marano, Fil-American spiker Kalei Mau, Alohi
Robins-Hardy, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Mylene Paat, Majoy Baron, Ces Molina, Roselyn
Doria, Dawn Macandili and Kath Arado.
Other members of the squad Alyssa Valdez, Jia Morado, Maddie Madayag, Eya Laure
and Jovelyn Gonzaga are set to join the team on Sept. 15 in the team’s first step in its
buildup for the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila in November.
FIBA: Iran sends Gilas home with a 20-
point World Cup rout
At -147, Gilas is in the running to finish in last place unless
Japan (-115), and Jordan (-132) also finish with 0-5 records and
end up with worse point differentials than the Filipinos. (FIBA)
It was false hope.
Gilas Pilipinas had its best start in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Sunday and yet the
Philippines still got demolished by Iran at the Wukesong Arena in Beijing, 95-75.
After another two losses in the 17-32 classification phase, Gilas ended the horror trip to
China with a 0-5 record, one of two sure teams to finish winless in the World Cup
through the weekend.
At -147, Gilas is in the running to finish in last place unless Japan (-115), and Jordan (-
132) also finish with 0-5 records and end up with worse point differentials than the
Filipinos.
Ivory Coast is also 0-5 but they have better point differential than Gilas.
The Philippines actually had a strong start, firing six three-point shots in the opening
period. However, Iran still led after one, 30-24.
Gilas’ offense cooled off, managing only 26 point through the next two quarters and the
Iranians made their move, dominating for a 75-50 lead.
Iran cruised in the fourth, making sure to maintain a huge lead. With China’s loss to
Nigeria, the Iranians clinched an automatic Olympics slot in beating Gilas, ending up as
the best Asian team in the World Cup.
Iran and China both finished with identical 2-3 marks but the Iranians (+7) had superior
point differential compared to the Chinese (-10).
Hamed Haddadi was the high man for Iran, finishing with 19 points. Nikkhah Bahrami
added 17 while Benham Yakhchali dropped 14 points.
Robert Bolick hit a couple of triples in garbage time to lead Gilas in scoring with 15
points. June Mar Fajardo was good for 10 points and Andray Blatche finished with 12
before being ejected.
Arguing a call, Blatche was given two technical fouls in the fourth quarter.

Mexico players take lessons from Argentina rout
SAN ANTONIO -- Mexico's 4-0 loss against Argentina on Sunday ended El Tri unbeaten run in
2019, but despite the thrashing, players are hoping to learn from the experience.
Mexico started brightly, but mistakes capitalized on by clinical hat-trick hero Lautaro Martinez
saw Argentina head into the break four goals ahead, with the game at times looking like it would
get even more ugly for El Tri, bringing back memories of the 7-0 loss to Chile in Copa America
Centenario in 2016.
"It wasn't that bad," said Miguel Layun when asked about whether there were similarities with
that defeat. "It was looking like being a disastrous game but we closed it out at 4-0 and in the
second half, we were looking to score and reduce the deficit."
"We committed mistakes that national teams like [Argentina] don't forgive, we have to learn
from it and we know that it can't happen again," he continued. "Their goal situations came
quickly and leave a bad taste in the mouth, sometimes it is difficult to recuperate the rhythm."

Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was adamant that remaining united after the 11-game undefeated
run will be important.
"It's a friendly game, we have to move on and lift our heads," he said. "The work we have been
doing has been could, but we have to correct a lot of things, remain as a team and be united."
Porto winger Jesus Corona maintained that El Tri shouldn't get carried away by the loss.
"It could be that sometimes we go crazy, we should be more concentrated," said Corona. "We
have to learn and hopefully something like today this doesn't happen again."
"The mentality is ok, it's just sometimes this happens," he added "What are we going to do? The
mentality is there, we just have to be more concentrated."
Following Tuesday's loss, Mexico manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino said that his side needed
more games moving forward against top level opposition.
"I don't think [the defeat] is our reality and I also don't think that going 11 games without losing
was our reality," the ex-Argentina and Barcelona manager said after the game. "It's the second 'A
level' game we've had. The first was against Chile [in March]. And the substantial difference
against Argentina and Chile is that tonight we committed the kinds of errors in which we knew
Argentina could damage us."
Martino added that Mexico needs more games against world powers to test themselves regularly
in trying conditions
"What I also understand is that so that this can be a learning experience doesn't happen we have
to play more of these types of games and get used to them," he said.
