What is Diabetes ?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your
blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high.
Blood glucose is your main source of energy and
comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone
made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food
get into your cells to be used for energy.
Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough or
any insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose
then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your
cells. Over time, having too much glucose in your
blood can cause health problems .
There are a few type of Diabetes :
a) Type 1 diabetes
Your body does not make insulin. Your immune system attacks
and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type
1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults,
although it can appear at any age. People with type 1 diabetes
need to take insulin every day to stay alive.
b) Type 2 diabetes
Your body does not make or use insulin well. You can develop
type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. However,
this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and
older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes.
c) Gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes develops in some women when they
are pregnant. Most of the time, this type of diabetes goes away
after the baby is born. However, if you’ve had gestational
diabetes, you have a greater chance of developing type 2
diabetes later in life. Sometimes diabetes diagnosed during
pregnancy is actually type 2 diabetes.
d) Other types of diabetes
Less common types include monogenic diabetes, which is an
inherited form of diabetes, and cystic fibrosis - related diabetes
What is the symptoms of Diabetes ?
These are some common symptoms :
1. Urinate (pee) a lot, often at night
2. Are very thirsty
3. Lose weight without trying
4. Are very hungry
5. Have blurry vision
6. Have numb or tingling hands or feet
7. Feel very tired
8. Have very dry skin
9. Have sores that heal slowly
10.Have more infections than usual
People who have Type 1 diabetes may also have nausea,
vomiting, or stomach pains. Type 1 diabetes symptoms can
develop in just a few weeks or months and can be severe. Type
1 diabetes usually starts when you’re a child, teen, or young
adult but can happen at any age.
Type 2 diabetes symptoms often take several years to
develop. Some people don’t notice any symptoms at all. Type 2
diabetes usually starts when you’re an adult, though more and
more children and teens are developing it. Because symptoms
are hard to spot, it’s important to know the risk factors for
type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes usually doesn’t have any obvious
symptoms. If you’re pregnant, your doctor should test you for
gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. If
needed, you can make changes to protect your health and your
baby’s health.
What is the cause of Diabetes ?
There are not underlying cause of diabetes ,
but there are some of the Diabetes risk factors .
Type 1 Diabetes is thought to be caused by an immune
reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake). Risk factors
for type 1 diabetes are not as clear as for prediabetes and type
2 diabetes. Known risk factors include :
A. Family history: Having a parent, brother, or sister with type
1 diabetes.
B. Age: You can get type 1 diabetes at any age, but it usually
develops in children, teens, or young adults.
You’re at risk for Type 2 Diabetes if you:
a. Have prediabetes.
b. Are overweight.
c. Are 45 years or older.
d. Have a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes.
e. Are physically active less than 3 times a week.
You’re at risk for Gestational Diabetes if you:
a. Had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy.
b. Have given birth to a baby who weighed over 9 pounds.
c. Are overweight.
d. Are more than 25 years old.
e. Have a family history of type 2 diabetes.
What is the cure for Diabetes ?
Despite active research, type 1 Diabetes and type 2
Diabetes has no cure. Treatment focuses on managing blood
sugar levels with insulin, diet and lifestyle to prevent
complications and blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels are in a
normal range again. This doesn't mean diabetes has gone for
good. Same as Gestational Diabetes , but Gestational diabetes
usually goes away after give birth
How to prevent Diabetes ?
For type 1 Diabetes , We do not know how to prevent type
1 diabetes by it is thought to be caused by genetics .
For type 2 Diabetes ,there are some of the common way
to prevent it :
a. Drinking more water and fewer sugary drinks
b. Eating more fruits and vegetables
c. Making foods healthier
d. Having more physical activity
For Gestational Diabetes :
a. Checking your blood sugar to make sure your levels stay in a
healthy range.
b. Eating healthy food in the right amounts at the right times ,
follow a healthy eating plan created by your doctor or
dietitian.
c. Being active , Regular physical activity that’s moderately
intense (such as brisk walking) lowers your blood sugar and
makes you more sensitive to insulin so your body won’t
need as much. Make sure to check with your doctor about
what kind of physical activity you can do and if there are any
kinds you should avoid.
d. Monitoring your baby. Your doctor will check your baby’s
growth and development.
