This mitten came to life during a very jolly evening with fabulous women,
and very tasty drinks…!
It happened under the influence of ca eine and a wee bit of alcohol, hence the name - but come on… It’s pretty great. :D
Needle size 2,5 mm and 3,0 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)
ABBREVIATIONS
k = knit stitch
p = purl stitch
m1 = make one stitch
k2tog = knit two stitches together
SSK = Slip, slip, knit - slip one stitch as if to knit, slip another stitch the same way, knit the two slipped stitches together
through the back loop.
cA = color A
cB = color B
The mitten can be knit longer if you wish, either before the thumb gusset increases (row 1 in the chart is repeated) or
before the decreases at the top (remember that changes will a ect the amount of yarn needed and that the pattern at the
top in the chart won’t be correct!).
CUFF
(knitted the same for both mittens)
Using the smaller needle and color A, cast on 56 stitches. Join to begin knitting in the round, being careful not to twist
your cast on.
Knit in 2x2 ribbing [k2, p2] untill cu measures 5 cm (or desired length).
You will now knit one increase row as followed: *[k5, m1] 5 times, k3* Repeat *-* one more time. (= 66 stitches).
Change to the larger needles and start knitting according to the main chart.
On row 18, put the 16 thumb stitches on a piece of scrap yarn or a stitch holder, cast on 6 new stitches. In the chart
these new stitches are marked with N, note what color the new stitches should have!
Continue knitting according to the chart. Thereafter break yarn and leave a longer tail for cA!
Graft the remaining 18 stitches with cA using kitchener stitch (https://youtu.be/qwl2ob4Anog).
Transfer the 16 resting thumb stitches back to the bigger needles from the scrap yarn/stitch holder, pick up 6 new
stitches from the 6 cast on stitches on the opposite side and also pick up 1 stitch on each side of these 6 stitches
(= 24 stitches).
When you pick up the 1+6+1 stitches, make sure they fall in correctly colorwise. Use the chart below for guidance. The
chart also shows the placement of the new stitches in reference to the 16 other thumb stitches.
Knit according to the chart until the thumb is 0,5 cm shorter than desired length.
After knitting to 0,5 cm less than desired length you will knit two decrease rows accordingly:
Decrease row 1: [k2tog cB, k2tog cA] to the end of row (= 12 stitches remaining). Break yarn for cB.
Decrease row 2: (cA): k2tog to end of row (= 6 stitches remaining).
Break yarn and pull it through the remaining 6 stitches, tighten carefully.
Weave in all ends, give your mittens a nice bath, block them and then call your friends for a nice knitting date at your
favorite co ee house - or bar!
Cheers!
