Activity 2 - The Indolence of The Filipinos

1. The document discusses 5 factors that contributed to the indolence of Filipinos during the Spanish colonization period: forced labor, a crooked education system, the establishment of gambling, a crooked religion, and high taxes. 2. For each factor, explanations are provided for how they caused indolence. For example, forced labor resulted in Filipinos giving up other work like agriculture. A crooked education system did not teach practical skills. Gambling altered perceptions that it could lead to easy money. 3. The response argues that some present-day Filipinos exhibit laziness and a "bahala na" attitude, blaming problems on fate instead of taking action,

5 FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO EXPLANATION WHY SUCH FACTOR

THE INDOLENCE OF THE FILIPINOS CAUSE INDOLENCE
1. Forced Labor Filipinos were subjected to forced labor
throughout the period of Spanish
colonization, which resulted in their being
indolence since they were forced to work on
ships, roads, and other public works. Due to
forced labor, in which they suffer abuse at
the hands of their employers, the Filipino
people have given up their other work, such
as agriculture and handicrafts.
2. A crooked system of education Having a crooked system of education during
the Spanish colonization has caused Filipinos
to be indolence. No formal education has
been taught in the school that is beneficial to
students' daily lives and can help the
development of the country, such as
industrial and other courses, and also that
will help them as students to be productive.
Instead of being taught at school about
preaching, that lowers their sense of worth as
people.
3. Gambling was established Gambling was established and tolerated
during Spanish colonization, which was led
by the friars and government officials.
Gambling, such as cockfights, happened
every day and on feast days. Gambling has
caused indolence in Filipino people since
gambling provides “sudden wealth” if you
win, which has altered their perception that it
can lead to easy money. As a result, Filipinos
began to spend more time and money on
gambling than on commercial and
agricultural endeavors.
4. A crooked system of religion Crooked religion during Spanish
colonization, in which naïve Filipinos were
taught that poor men could easily enter
heaven, has caused Filipinos not to work and
be productive.
5. High tax During Spanish colonization, a high tax
collection system was put in place, which
caused Filipinos who were involved in small
businesses, agriculture, and industrial
enterprises to give up on them because the
money they would make from sales would
only be used to pay the tax; leaving the
businesses they owned with no profit and
eventually business insolvency.

Write a paragraph-long response on this argument: Filipinos of the present time, in general,
are lazy people and often times condone to the “Bahala Na Attitude”

"Bahala na" is a common word used by Filipino people. It is usually viewed as a negative or positive
response to a situation. Filipinos are viewed as hardworking and resourceful among other nations.
They are very dedicated to their job, which is why thousands of Filipinos work overseas, but not all
Filipinos are hard-working and resourceful. In this generation, most Filipinos are lazy, which is why
most problems in our society still exist; thousands of Filipinos are unemployed and experiencing
poverty. “Bahala na" is viewed as positive when it raises one's courage and determination, makes one
persistent despite the uncertainties, and allows one to cope with unpredictable and stressful situations.
On the other hand, it is viewed as negative when people who have lazy traits use ”Bahala na” as
“whatever happens, happen“ and “come what it may”as a way of expressing a fatalistic attitude
towards life and surrendering it to fate. This kind of attitude results in Filipinos depending on their
fate rather than doing something that can help or change it. In the perspective of a student during a
midterm exam, instead of studying in order to obtain a high score, a lazy student uses “bahala na" as a
way of surrendering his or her scores to fate.
