(Ancient Theater )Greek 700 B.C. - 220 B.C. ➢ One of its highlights include festivals honoring their many gods, one god being
“Dionysus” with a religious festival called the “Cult of Dionysus”
Theater
➢ There are 3 types of drama, one of which is “Tragedy”, referring to goats
sacrificed to Dionysus before performances or to goat skins worn by the
performers in Greece tragedy was the most admired type of play, for it deals
w/ tragic events that have an unhappy ending. Thespis is the first actor &
nicknamed “Father of Tragedy”.
➢ Comedy being the 2nd, it’s derived from imitation and has no origins,
Aristophanes wrote 11 plays & out of all of them, Lysistrata only survived.
➢ Satyr being the 3rd, contains comic elements to lighten the overall mood or a
serious play with a happy ending the satyr play was a short light-hearted tale
piece performed after each trilogy of the tragedies it is an ancient Greek form
of tragic humor.
(Ancient Theater) Roman 3rd Century B.C. - 4th Century ➢ Had varied in interesting art forms like festival performances of state theater
A.D. (201 B.C. - 400 A.C.) acrobatics the staging of comedies of Plato and the highly verbally elaborate

tragedies of Seneca, Etruscan actors being the 1st experienced actors.
➢ Triumvir Pompeii was one of the first permanent non-wooden theaters in
Rome whose structure was somewhat similar to the theatre of Athens.
➢ Usual themes for Roman theater plays were chariots races gladiators and
public executions the Romans loved a good spectacle they loved to watch
combat, and admired blood sports and gladiator competitions.
Medieval Theater 500 C.E. - 1400 ➢ Since it wasn’t allowed in Europe, they traveled from one town to another as
puppeteers, jugglers, storytellers, dancers, singers, and other theatrical acts.

➢ “Mysére d’ Adam” or “The Mystery of Adam”, the story revolves around
➢ Adam and Eve and end with the devil capturing and bringing them to hell, and
after centuries, plays in medieval times are revolved around biblical themes.
Renaissance Theater 1400 - 1600 ➢ Is characterized by a return of classical Greek and Roman arts and culture,
and during the Middle Ages, mystery place formed a part of religious festivals
in england and other parts of Europe during the Renaissance period
➢ Commedia dell’arte and masques are presently seen at that time & are played
in most courts, and the 1st supporter being Queen Elizabeth I, Gorboduc,
a.k.a. Ferrex & Porrex, was an English play, and first performed the
Christmas celebration in 1561 and performed before Queen Elizabeth the first
on January 18 1562 by the Gentlemen of the Inner Temple.
➢ William Shakespeare is the mastermind out of all in this era, for he’s an
English poet, playwright, and an actor & is said to be the greatest writer of all,
even earning the title in England & is called as “Bard of Avon”. Some plays
like Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Cleopatra, Much Ado from Nothing, and more
are present in this era.
➢ ballet was performed in public during this period ballet is a formalized form of
dance that originated from the Italian Renaissance courts it developed and
flourished from Italy to France with the help of Catherine de’ Medici (Queen of
France), and Proscenium was developed at that time.
Baroque Theater 1600 - 1750 ➢ marked by the use of technology in current broadway or commercial plays,
and the theater crew uses machines for special effects and scene changes
which may be changed in a matter of seconds with the use of ropes and
pulleys, and are seen w/ it in films such as Vatel (2000), Farinelli (1999), &
different stages of Orpheus.
Neoclassical Theater 1800 - 1900 ➢ a movement where the styles of Roman and Greek societies influenced the
theater arts during the neoclassical period, the theater was characterized by
its grandiosity, costumes and sceneries were highly elaborate, and the main
concepts of the place were to entertain and to teach lessons, & decorum was
implemented, and only has 2 types of plays — Tragedy and Comedy.
➢ Pierre Cornielle, known as the Father of the French Tragedy, Jean
Baptiste Poquelin, known for his comedy plays, and Jean Racine were
all playwright directors back then, & they used “Limelight” in the U.S.
Romantic Theater 1800 - 2000 ➢ Have what we call as melodrama and operas became the most popular
theatrical forms, and such as acting scenery and costumes and dance were
important elements of theater.
➢ Victor Marie Hugo, one of the greatest and best-known French writers,
were also in that era, and other writers such as Charles Nodier, George
Sand, Heinrich von Kleist, Ludwig Uhland, Georges Bizet, Franz Lizst,
Richard Wagner, Frederic Chopin, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz
Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, and Hector Berlioz are all present in this
era.
