Protecting and Conserving Tropical
Rainforests, Coral Reefs and Mangrove
Swamps
MELC: Explain the need to protect and conserve tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and
mangrove swamps (S6MT-III-j-6)
Objectives: 1. Describe the rainforest, coral reefs, mangrove swamps
2. Identify ways to protect and conserve tropical rainforests, coral reefs,
and mangrove swamps
3. Explain the need to protect and conserve tropical rainforests, coral
reefs, and mangrove swamps
Let’s Explore and Discover
Unlocking of Difficulties
Reforestation is renewing forest Conservation is caring for and
cover by natural seeding or by the protecting our natural resources so
artificial planting of seeds or young that they continue to exist for future
trees. generations.
Palawan is known for its rich natural resources that include tropical
rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps. These attract visitors coming from
different places locally and internationally. These natural resources put its name
to the well-known 7 Wonders of the World.
These three ecosystems ( rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps)
have their unique environmental conditions to which living things have to adapt
for survival.

place?
They are regions with
year-round warmth and Why do people love
abundant rainfall. to go to these
places?
Like in other places, there are large tropical rainforests also found here in
Puerto Princesa City that provide homes as well as a breeding zone for the wild
animals mostly for the endangered and endemic species. The huge trees protect
us from flooding and hold a big amount of water for the dry season. They also give
us oxygen.
1
Conservation and preservation are ways that these forests will last. To
preserve them, we must learn how to appreciate and take care of them. Joining
any government programs about reforestation like “Pista Y Ang Cagueban” will
contribute to the sustainability of our forests. We must replant trees that are being
wasted and cut by loggers. Everyone should help in promoting its importance to
the members of our family and friends. We must fight against deforestation and
urbanizing for our future generation.
Have you tried exploring the
seabed nearby by snorkeling
or diving?
What have you observed?
Do you think they are
important?
The Coral reefs provide a home for a lot of marine animals that make marine
food chains active and continuous. It is also the so-called rainforest of the sea.
Corals belong to the animal kingdom grown for decades or longer.
We should keep in our hearts and minds that throwing any garbage in the
seas or any bodies of water will surely affect them. Picking up your trash and carry
away the trash that others have left behind will make you a marine debris
crusader. Conserve water! The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater
that eventually find their way back into the ocean. If you dive and see these corals
don’t touch them. Destroying them will mean stopping the reproduction of marine
animals like fishes, shrimps, etc. Instead, volunteer in any government programs
in protecting and conserving these coral reefs like the yearly coastal clean-up
drive.
Mangrove Swamps are places where river water
and seawater meet. It is very important to
conserve and protect our mangrove swamps
because they give us a lot of benefits. Their roots
can catch particles of silt, dirt, and sand that
build up shorelines. They protect coastal
communities from storm surges, waves, tides, and
currents. They are also breeding zones of other
marine animals.
There are ways in doing so like throwing your garbage properly, joining in
any programs that promote conservation and protection of these mangrove trees
like the yearly ‘Love of Nature” and the Coastal Clean-up drive, participate in
mangrove poster making contest and other competitions that promote the value
of this ecosystem.
Protecting and conserving these three ecosystems will make them exist for
future generations to enjoy.
