It’s when you describe the main events of the story in the order
they happened. It also describes a short action that interrupts an
action in the past continuous
EXAMPLES :

THEY HEARD A STRANGE SOUND AND CALLED THE POLICE
THE PRINCIPAL SENT THE MEMO BUT NOBODY READ IT.
