PAST SIMPLE

It’s when you describe the main events of the story in the order
they happened. It also describes a short action that interrupts an
action in the past continuous

EXAMPLES :

They watched a movie and went to a restaurant
She did her homework and went to sleep.
They made their speech but nobody cared about it.
He worked out 2 hrs and went home.
PAST CONTINUOUS vs SIMPLE PAST
It’s when you describe an action in progress at a particular time
in the past. It’s also a continuing action interrupted by another
action in the past. WHEN and While are connectors when you
combine the past continuous vs simple past. When usually
introduces simple past and While introduces past continuous.

EXAMPLES:
 I WAS WATCHING THE SOCCER GAME AT 3:00 P.M.
YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.
 THEY WERE EATING AT FRIDAY’S AT 9:00P.M.
 I WAS WALKING INTO THE WOODS WHEN I SAW A GRIZZLY

II. PAST PERFECT : it’s when you describe a completed

action that happened before a particular point in the
past. We form the past perfect with the following
pattern:
S + HAD + VERB PAST PARTICIPLE + COMPLEMENT

PAST PERFECT VS SIMPLE PAST: We also use it with

sequencing expressions: when, after, by the time, as soon
as,) when an action happened (past perfect) before
another event (past simple)
