1. The document calculates pipe diameters, pump capacities, and heads for a ship's fire main system based on classification society rules. Pipe diameter is calculated to be 150mm to handle 140m3/hr flow. 2. Pump capacity is calculated as 171.77m3/hr total from two pumps at 85.89m3/hr each. Pump head is calculated as 48.01m including losses. A 100m3/hr pump rated for 100m head is specified. 3. Emergency pump capacity is calculated per rules as a minimum of 25m3/hr but no more than 40% of total fire pump capacity.

1. Calculation of Fire main pipe

Calculation of pipe diameter for fire main system based on BV

"The diameter of the fire main and water service pipes shall be sufficient for the
effective distribution of the maximum required discharge from two fire pumps
operating simultaneously, except that in the case of cargo ships other than those
included in [6.3], the diameter need only be sufficient for the discharge of 140
3
m /hour."

Q = 140 m3/h = 0.0389 3

m /s

"If galvanised steel pipes are used for sea water system, the water velocity is not to
exceed 3 m/s."

So the velocity = 2 m/s

Q = vxA
A = Q/v
A = 0,0389/2 m
A = 0.019444 m
dH = Q4
v
= 0.157385 m
= 157.3849 mm

According to the calculation, specification of selected pipe :

2. Calculation of Fire pump and pump capacity

Accoding to LR Rules and Regulations, total capacity of fire pump and capacity of
each pump as follow :

a) "pumps in cargo ship, other than any emergency pump : the quantity of water is
not less than four thirds of the quantity required in CH 1, Sec 10 to be dealt
with by each of the independent bilge pumps in a passanger ship of the same
dimension when employed in bilge pumping, provide that in no cargo ship other
than those included in [6.3], need the total requires capacity of the fire pumps
3
exceed 180 m /h."

b) Capacity of each fire pump : Each of the fire pumps (other than any emergency
pump requires in [1.3.3] a) for cargo ship) shall have a capacity not less than
80% of the total requied capacity divided by the minimum number required fire
pump, but in any case not less than 25 m3/h, and each such pump shall in any
event be capable of delivering at least the two required jets of water. These fire
pumps shall be capabable of supplying the fire main system under the required
conditions. Where more pumps than the minimum of required pumps are
3
installed, such additional pumps shall have a capacity of at least 25 m /h and
shall be capable of delivering at least the two jets of water required in [1.2.5]a)

Total Capacity of fire pump = 4/3 x bilge pump

3
= 171.7733333 m /h
Capacity of each pump :
Qfp = total required capacity / minimum number of fire pumps
3
= 85.89 m /h

V = Q/A
= 4417.03 m/h

Hs = From draft to hydrant in the navigation deck
= 20 m
Hp = Different pressure in suction side and discharge side

But from BV Part C for cargo More than 6000 GT pressure at nozzle 0,27 N/mm

"With the two pumps simultaneously delivering water through the nozzles
specified in [1.2.3], with the quantity of water as specified in [1.4.3], through
any adjacent hydrants, the following minimum pressures shall be maintained at
all hydrants :

b) For cargo ships :

o) 6000 gross tonnage and upwards = 0,27 N/mm2
o) Less than 6000 gross tonnage = 0,25 N/mm2

Nozzle for vessel < (P) = 0.25 N/mm²

6000 GT = 250000 N/m²
Density sea water (ρ) = 1025 kg/m³
Gravitation (g) = 9.8 m/s²

So head pressure is
Hp = ( Pdiscd - Psuct ) / ρg
= 250000 / (1025 x 9,8)
= 24.89 m

Hv = Difference speed between the suction side discharge. To head

velocity in the fluid velocity is assumed to discharge to the suction
side of the same: and there is no pressure difference between the
sides.
