IV. Question no 1 and 2 in section - A are one mark questions. They are to be
answered in one word or in one sentence.
V. Question no 3 to 5 in section - B are two marks questions. They are to be
answered in about 30 words each.
VI. Question no 6 to 15 in section - C are three marks questions. They are to be
answered in about 50 words each.
VII. Question no 16 to 21 in section - D are five marks questions. They are to be
answered in about 70 words each.
VIII. Question no 22 to 27 in section - E are based on practical skills. Each question is
a two marks questions. These are to be answered in brief.
SECTION A
1. a. Where does digestion of fat take place in our body? (1)
b. What is the mode of nutrition in human beings?
2. The number of malaria patients in a village increased tremendously when large (1)
number of frogs were exported from the village. What could be the cause for it?
SECTION B
3. a. What is the colour of Ferrous sulphate crystal? How does this colour change (2)
after heating?
b. Name the products formed on strong heating of Ferrous sulphate crystal. Support
your answer with required equation.

4. a. Name the information source for making proteins in the cell. (2)
b. State two basic events in reproduction.
5. a. A ray of light enters a rectangular glass slab of refractive index 1.5. It is found (2)
that the ray emerges from the opposite face of the slab without being displaced.
If its speed in air is 3 x 108 ms-1 then what is its speed in glass?
b.“The refractive index of carbon disulphide is 1.63”. What is the meaning of this
statement in relation to speed of light?
OR
What is meant by lateral displacement of light? Illustrate it with the help
of a diagram. List any two factors on which the lateral displacement depends.

6. a. When the powder of a common metal is heated in an open china dish, its (3)
colour turns black. However, when Hydrogen is passed over the hot black
substance so formed, it regains its original colour. Based on the above information,
Answer the following questions.
(i) What type of chemical reaction takes place in each of the two given steps?
(ii) Name the metal initially taken in the powder form. Write balanced chemical
equations for both reactions.
b. What are anti-oxidants? Why are they added to fat and oil containing foods ?
7. When a mixture of gases X and Y is compressed to 340 atm pressure and then (3)
passed over a catalyst consisting of a mixture of Zinc oxide and Chromium oxide
(heated to a temperature of 300°C), then an organic compound Z having the
molecular formula CH4O is formed. X is a highly poisonous gas which is formed in
appreciable amounts when a fuel burns in a limited supply of air ; Y is a gas which
can be made by the action of a dilute acid on an active metal; and Z is a liquid
organic compound which can react with sodium metal to produce Hydrogen gas.
(a) What are X, Y and Z?
(b) Write a balanced chemical equation of the reaction which takes place when X and
Y combine to form Z. Indicate the conditions under which the reaction occurs.
OR
a. “Sodium hydrogen carbonate is a basic salt”. Justify the statement.
b. State in brief the preparation of washing soda from baking soda with the help of
balanced chemical equation of the reaction involved.

8. Atoms of eight elements A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H have the same number of (3)
electronic shells but different number of electrons in their outermost shell. It was
found that elements A and G combine to form an ionic compound. This compound is
added in a small amount to almost all vegetable dishes during cooking. Oxides of
elements A and B are basic in nature while those of E and F are acidic. The oxide of
D is almost neutral. Based on the above information answer the following questions:
a. To which group or period of the Periodic Table do the listed elements belong?
b. What would be nature of compound formed by a combination of elements B and F?
c. Which two of these elements could definitely be metals?
d. Which one of the eight elements is most likely to be found in gaseous state at
room temperature?
e. If the number of electrons in the outermost shell of elements C and G be 3 and 7
respectively, write the formula of the compound formed by the combination of C
and G.
9. a. State the functions of any three parts of the structural and functional units of (3)
nervous system.
b. Mention the function of the hind-brain in humans.
c. List the components of reflex arc in correct sequence. State in brief the role of
brain in reflex action.
10. a. Name the site of exchange of material between the blood and surrounding (3)
cells in human being.
b. Draw a schematic representation of transport and exchange of Oxygen and
Carbon dioxide in human body.
c. List three characteristics of lungs which make it an efficient respiratory surface.
11. a. What is the nature of the image formed by a concave mirror if the (3)
magnification produced by the mirror is +3?
b. A concave lens has focal length of 20 cm. At what distance from the lens a 5 cm
tall object be placed so that it forms an image at 15 cm from the lens? Also
calculate the size of the image formed.
OR
a. If the image formed by a lens is diminished in size and erect, for all positions of
the object, what type of lens is it?
b. Name the point on the lens through which a ray of light passes undeviated.
c. An object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a convex lens of focal
length 20 cm. The distance of the object from the lens is 30 cm. Find (i) the
position (ii) the magnification and (iii) the nature of the image formed.
12.a.(i) Draw a closed circuit diagram consisting of a 0.5 m long nichrome wire (3)
XY, an ammeter, a voltmeter, four cells of 1.5 V each and a plug key.

(ii)Following graph was plotted between V and I values :
What would be the values of V /I ratios when the potential difference is 0.8 V, 1.2
V and 1.6 V respectively? What conclusion do you draw from these values?
b. A 9 Ω resistance is cut into three equal parts and connected in parallel. Find the
equivalent resistance of the combination.
13.a. An electric bulb of resistance 200Ω draws a current of 1 Ampere. Calculate (3)
the power of the bulb the potential difference at its ends and the energy in
kWh, consumed burning it for 5h.
b. The resistivity of a metal wire is 10 x 10−8 Ω m at 20°C. Find the resistance of the
same wire of 2 meter length and 0.3 mm thickness.
14. a. What happens when wood is burnt in a limited supply of oxygen? Name the (3)
residue left behind after the reaction and state two advantages of using this
residue as a fuel over wood.
b. What is a solar cell panel? Mention any two of its applications.
15. a. How is increase in demand for energy affecting our environment adversely? (3)
b. What are planktons?
c. What is the difference between the food habits of organisms belonging to the first
and the third trophic levels ? Give one example each of the organisms belonging
to these two trophic levels.
OR
a. State one advantage of using jute bags over plastic bags for shopping.
b. We do not clean ponds or lakes but an aquarium needs to be cleaned
periodically. Why?
c. What will be the consequence of the absence of decomposers in the ecosystem?

16. a. Explain the method by which Aluminium metal is extracted. (5)
b. Give the name and chemical formula of the ore of Copper.
c. How is Zinc extracted from calamine? Explain with equations.

17. a. What are Carboxylic acids? Write the structural formula of the functional group (5)
present in them. What special name is given to 5 – 8% solution of ethanoic acid in
water? How does ethanoic acid react with Sodium carbonate? Write a chemical
equation of the reaction and common name of the salt produced.
b. Write the name and molecular formula of an organic compound having its name
suffixed with ‘-ol’ and having two Carbon atoms in the molecule. With the help of
a balanced chemical equation indicate what happens when it is heated with
excess of Conc.H2S04.

a. Name the functional group of organic compounds that can be hydrogenated. With
the help of suitable example explain the process of hydrogenation mentioning
the conditions of the reaction and any one change in physical property with the

that are hydrogenated.

19. A blue colour flower plant denoted by BB is cross bred with that of white (5)
colour flower plant denoted by bb.
a. State the colour of flower you would expect in their F 1 generation plants.
b. What must be the percentage of white flower plants in F 2 generation if flowers
of F1 plants are self-pollinated?
c. State the expected ratio of the genotypes BB and Bb in the F 2 progeny.

Justify the statement with the help of an example and also give reason for the
same.
b. Define the term ‘evolution’. “Evolution cannot be equated with progress”. Justify
this statement.

26. In an experiment to study the relation between the potential difference (2)
across a resistor and the current through it a student recorded the following
observations.
On examining the above observations, the teacher asked the students to reject one
set of readings as the values were out of agreement with the rest. Which one of the
above sets of readings can be rejected? Calculate the mean value of resistance of
the resistor based on the remaining four sets of readings.
27. List any two factors on which the angle of deviation through a prism depends. (2)

How will you distinguish between a concave and a convex mirror?
