2workshop Gadget - Excel Solver Project Question 2023-1

This document is an assessment for an operational research module. It contains instructions for students to answer all questions, submit work electronically, and not copy others. It also lists 11 graduate attributes and indicates attribute 5 on engineering methods and tools will be assessed. The assessment contains two sections - section A has two questions on linear programming and queueing theory, and section B has five questions formulating and solving a linear programming model to maximize profit for a workshop. Students are instructed to show work for specified attributes at a knowledge, development, or assessment level.

The purpose and level of this assessment will have been achieved when you have
demonstrated the skills and applied competence, in specified graduate attributes, on
a knowledge, development or assessment level assessed in different modules during
the course of your studies for this qualification. Competence in the eleven Graduate
Attributes listed below, have to be achieved through all the modules in the qualification.

The highlighted graduate attributes will be measured with this assessment, on the level
(knowledge, developed or assessed) indicated:

SECTION A [20]

1. Set up an initial simplex tableau, given the following two constraints and objective
function: [13]

Minimize Z = 8X1 + 6X2

Subject to: 2X1 + 4X2  8
3X1 + 2X2  6
X1, X2 ≥ 0
2. Cars arrive at two drive-through windows at a post office at the rate of 4 every 10
minutes. The average service time is 2 minutes. A single line would be formed and as
a car reached the front of the line it would go to the next available clerk. The Poisson
distribution is appropriate for the arrival rate and service times are exponentially
distributed. Both clerks work at the same rate.

Compute the probability that there are no cars in the system? [7]

SECTION B [30]

3. A workshop produces a gadget with two parts A and B plus its package C. A, B and C
must be processed through workstations 1, 2 and 3
The accountant analyses cost and sales data and states that each part A and B
produced will yield a R3, R2 contribution to profit respectively. Each package C
produced will reduce the profit by R1. The production manager specifies the following:
A cost of up to R9 is incurred at workstation 1, at least R2 at workstation 2 and at least
R5 at workstation 3.
Each part A produced costs R1 on workstation 1, R2 on workstation 2 and R3 on
workstation 3.
Producing each part B costs R3 on workstation 1, R3 on workstation 2 and R2 is
reduced from the cost at workstation 3.
Producing each part C costs R1 on workstation 1, reduces R1 from the cost at
workstation 2 and adds a cost of R1 at workstation 3.

i. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem. [10]

ii. Solve with the Simplex Method, using Excel Solver. [10]

iii. Generate a sensitivity analysis report [4]

iv. What is the maximum amount of profit that the company can get by having some
additional hours at workstation 1? [3]

v. What is the lowest number of hours allowable at workstation 2? [3]

Total marks = 50
Full marks = 50
