Science PPT (Earth's Structure)

The document summarizes key layers and components of the Earth's structure in 3 paragraphs. It discusses the 3 major discontinuities that separate the Earth's crust, mantle, and core. It then explains the 2 main types of seismic waves, P and S waves, that travel through the Earth's layers at different speeds. Finally, it defines the lithosphere, asthenosphere, and tectonic plates, noting that the asthenosphere is a ductile region beneath the lithosphere composed of tectonic plates.

DISCONTINUITIES
The fundamental layers of the earth are
separated from each other by transition
zones. These transition zones are popularly
known as Discontinuities.

Mohorovicic Discontinuity - also known as Moho, is the

interface between the crust and the mantle.
By: Andrija Mohorovicic

Gutenburg Discontinuity - marks the boundary

between the mantle and the outer core.
By: Beno Gutenberg

Lehmann Discontinuity - is located between the liquid

outer core and the solid inner core.
By: Inge Lehmann
SEISMIC WAVES
is a mechanical wave of acoustic energy that
travels through the Earth or another planetary
body.

BODY WAVES – waves that travel below

surface of Earth.

P waves - travel fastest at a speed from 4 to 8

km per second at the Earth’s crust, hence they
are the FIRST TO ARRIVE AT A LOCATION
(surface).

S waves - usually travel at approximately 2.5 to 4

km per second and CAN ONLY TRAVEL THROUGH
SOLID MATERIALS, unlike the P waves which can
move through all states of matter.
