Thesis - Chapter 3

This chapter outlines the methodology used in the study. A descriptive research design was used to identify the types of disputes filed in barangays, their frequency, causes, and strategies used by mediators. The respondents were 96 members of dispute mediation committees across 8 barangays in Cauayan City, Isabela. Surveys using a closed-ended questionnaire were used to collect data on dispute types, causes, and effectiveness of mediation strategies. Data was analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and a 5-point Likert scale.

METHODOLOGY

This Chapter deals with the method in and procedures to be used in this

research, the respondent of the survey, the data gathering tools and the data gathering

procedures.

Research Design

This research study used the descriptive research design. This design was

useful to: (1) identify the topologies of disputes filed in the barangay; (2) Identify the

degree of occurrence of dispute in the barangay; (3) Identify the major causes of these

disputes and their level of frequency; (4) Identify the strategies utilized by the Lupong

Tagapamayapa in mediating disputes in the barangay; and (5) Determine how

effective are the strategies utilized by the Lupon Tagapamayapa in resolving disputes

and averting violence.

Respondents of the Study

The population target in this study was the Lupong Tagapamayapa specifically

in Poblacion, Cauayan City, Isabela covering the barangays Alicaocao, Cabaruan,

District I, District II, District III, San Fermin, Tagaran, and Turayong. There were 10

Lupon members in each barangay and for purposes of this study, the researcher

included not only the Lupon members but also the Lupon Chairman and the Lupon

Secretary. Therefore, there was a total of 12 respondents in barangay which was

equivalent to 96 respondents.

Data Gathering Instrument

Survey Questionnaires was utilized as data gathering instrument because of its

ability to reduce any bias and the collection of authentic data important for statistical

analysis. The researcher used a closed-ended questionnaire to assess the Barangay

Justice System in Poblacion region in Cauayan City, Isabela.

The survey questionnaire was divided into three (3) parts: Part I was designed

to gather specific responses on topologies of disputes filed in the barangay and its

level of frequency; Part II was designed to gather specific responses on major causes

of these disputes; and Part III was designed to gather specific responses on strategies

utilized by the Lupong Tagapamayapa in resolving disputes and averting violence and

its level of effectiveness. A total enumeration was employed to obtain data and

information from the respondents. The data was analyzed using Likert Scale.

Scale Range Level of Frequency Level of Effectiveness

1 1.00 – 1.79 Never Not Effective

2 1.80 – 2.59 Rarely Less Effective

3 2.60 – 3.40 Sometimes Moderately Effective

4 3.41 – 4.20 Often Effective

5 4.21 – 5.00 Always Very Effective

Data Gathering Procedures

The researcher obtained the specific information from the respondents through

the use of questionnaires to assess the Barangay Justice System in Poblacion, Cauayan

City, Isabela.

The questionnaire consists of three (3) parts. The first part was designed to

identify the topology of disputes filed in the barangay and show its degree of

occurrence and level of frequency. The second part was designed to identify the major

causes of these disputes and show its degree of occurrence and level of frequency. The

third part was designed to identify the strategies utilized by the Lupong

Tagapamayapa in resolving disputes and averting violence and assess its level of

effectiveness.

The following procedures was conducted by the researcher to gather relevant

information about the study: First, a request letter to conduct the study was prepared

by the researcher. Then the researcher administered the questionnaires and personally

retrieved it from the respondents. The researcher tabulated, analyzed, summarized,

presented and interpreted the data.

Sampling Technique

This study was conducted in the Poblacion Region of Cauayan City, Isabela

consist of Barangay Alicaocao, Cabaruan, District I, District II, District III, San

Fermin, Tagaran, and Turayong. A total enumeration was used to obtain the number of

respondents (a total of 96 respondents) as a source of data in this study.

Statistical Tools and Treatment

For better understanding of the results of the study, all data was gathered and

statistically treated using certain simple statistical tools and formulas. The statistical

treatment is necessary to find the natural tendencies, means of evaluation and he

majority trends of expressed opinions. The statistical tools consist of:

1. The Frequency – the study of quantitatively describing the characteristics

of a set of data is called descriptive statistics. Frequency analysis is an

important area of statistics that deals with the number of occurrence and

analyses measures of central tendency, dispersion, and percentile.

2. The Percentage – was also taken from each category after the mean had

been computed. Percentage of each class was determined by dividing each

sum with the total number of respondents then the result was multiplied

with one hundred. This statistical tool was utilized in statistically treating

the data on the demographic profile of the respondents to determine its

frequency and percentile.

3. The Weighted Mean – it was used to indicate the point of concentration per

item because it is more reliable and easily understood. This tool was used

in statistically treating data on the assessment of the Barangay Justice

System in the Poblacion Region of the City of Cauayan, Isabela.

4. The Likert Scale – this study utilized the Likert Scale method to determine

the degree of extend of the study variables. This is the criteria which served

as a basis for interpreting the results from the concept of boundary of

numerals. The reference of the Likert Scale used in this study was cited

from Vagias, Wade M. (2006) “Likert – Type scale response anchor”

Clemson International Institute for Research Development, Clemson

University. This Likert Scale was used to assess the Barangay Justice

System in the Poblacion Region of Cauayan City, Isabela.
