This is probably one of our most popular songs. Why? Well just listen to the sound file. This
beautiful tune flows and glides and flits like a butterfly in flight. It is easily accessible and very
effective when sung in parts and the lyrics are poetic “Soft as silk and lighter than air, Teach me
to glide, If I can float at your side, There will be no-one happier than I, Butterfly” Try with Key
Stage 3 (and upper Key Stage 2) and you’ll see why people love it.
Teaching notes
This song is written for Key Stages 2 and 3 with these purposes in mind.
1. It should be enjoyable enough for the children to want to sing it.
2. It includes some part singing which should be easily accessible to all children.
3. It should be ‘dance friendly’ so that it can be interpreted in dance.
When you start this song, don’t attempt to tackle the 2nd vocal lines straight away.
The words and tune are designed to be challenging and fun – so give the children plenty of
time to learn them. Once you feel confident, go back and try the second vocal line. Don’t try to
fit them together yet – just learn the line. Again, once you feel confident, split the children into
two groups and sing the parts together.
There is an ideal opportunity for solo performances at the start.
Part singing is good to tackle in large groups, so perhaps combining classes in school would
be a good idea.
