What’s In

Strategic analysis is the process of examining, using one’s rationality or

reason, the organization’s surroundings and resources, and how they relate with
each other to formulate a strategy to meet objectives and improve performance. It
is the understanding of an organization’s external and internal environments to
create a strategy for better utilization of resources in the pursuit of the

v

organization’s objectives and priorities. Such as understanding is drawn from the

facts, data and instructions at hand.
Strategic analysis involves rational processes which intuitive thinking relies
on one’s hunch and gut feeling.
Intuitive thinking is sensing or knowing without using rational processes
such ass reading facts and instructions. According to the dictionary, intuition is
“something that is known or understood without proof or evidence.” Simply put,
intuitive thinking is making choices and decisions according to one’s hunch and gut
feeling without knowing the reason why.

What is It

Global Networks
It deals with interrelations and interconnections of people, services, and
institutions beyond the local, domestic, or national borders and instead span
the whole world.

- Global networks appear in many forms such as international production,

networks, international security alliances, international amnesty, global
network for tropical diseases, and world watch for maritime life among
others. The networks are characterized by actors composed of people
governments, institutions or firms sharing common interests and
exchanging and interacting with one another.

Globalization

As cited in the Revisita destatica (2012), the term globalization refers to

the emergence of an international network, belonging to an economic and social
system. One of the earliest uses of the term "globalization", as known, was in 1930
- in a publication entitled “Towards New Education” to designate an overview of the
human experience in education.

Since the invention of the concept, globalization has inspired numerous

definitions and has had a history going back in time to the great commercial and
imperialist movements throughout Asia and the Indian Ocean since the fifteenth
century.

Roland Robertson, a professor of sociology at the University of Aberden,

was the first person who defined globalization as "the understanding of the world
and the increased perception of the world as a whole." Martin Albrow and Elizabeth
King, sociologists, define globalization as "all those processes by which the
peoples of the world are incorporated into a single world society.

It can be linked to the local, the national and the regional. On the one hand,
a connection is made between social and economic relationships and networks,
organized on a local or national, on the other hand, it connects social and economic
relationships and networks formed on wider scale the regional and global
interactions.

It is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies,

and governments of different nations. A process driven by international trade and
investment and aided by information technology. This process has effects on the
environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and
prosperity, and on human physical well-being on societies around the world. For
many developing nations, globalization has led to an improvement in standard of
living through improved roads and transportation, improved health care, and
improved education due to the global expansion of corporations. However,
globalization has had a negative effect on individuals who live in developed
nations. Some of the factors that cause globalization are migration and labor.

Migration is a movement to another place, often of a large group of people.

Labor is defined as work, especially hard physical work.

People are more willing to move between different countries today in search
for work. Remittances now play a large role in transfers from developed countries
to developing countries.

How globalization works

Globalization is driven by the convergence of political, cultural and economic

systems that ultimately promote and often necessitate increased interaction,
integration and dependency amongst nations.
Types of globalization

1. Economic globalization.
This type focuses on the unification and integration of international financial
markets, as well as multinational corporations that have a significant influence on
international markets.
The forerunners of economic globalization are the multinational companies
(MNCs) or transnational companies which have branches in two or more countries.

Example: Sportswear manufacturers such as Nike, Adidas and Sketchers;

beverage companies such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi; vehicle manufacturers such
as Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet and Hyundai; fast food chains such as McDonalds,
Jollibee and Burger King.

2. Political globalization.
This type deals mainly with policies designed to facilitate international trade
and commerce. It also deals with the institutions that implement these policies,
which can include national governments as well as international institutions, such
as the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization.
Example: International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Crime Court are
both located in Netherlands have jurisdiction over international cases.

3. Sociocultural globalization.
It is when the transmission of ideas, people, and goods around the world
have reached to such an extent that it leads to more interconnectedness between
people of different cultures.
2 components

Cultural globalization refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and

values around the world in such a way as to extend and intensify social
relations. This process is marked by the common consumption of cultures
that have been diffused by the Internet, popular culture media, and
international travel. Religion, language, cuisine, fashion, music and dance
and other ratifications of pop culture are the elements in cultural
globalization.

Example: Korean Pop(K-pop) culture with good looking singers and dancers
have become a phenomenon in many countries.

viii
9/26/2021

Social globalization covers the diffusion of beliefs, practices, and issues

concerning population, growth, media, urbanization, tourism, education and
sports that also drive nations, institutions and governments to expand social
relations.

Example: Students studying in colleges and universities outside their

countries has increased. (Koreans, Nepalese, Indians coming to the
Philippines to study in the University)

4. Financial Globalization is a collective concept that refers to increasing global

linkages created through cross-border financial flows. Financial integration refers
to an individual country's linkages to international capital markets.
www.shsph.blogspot.com 7

5. Technological Globalization is accelerated in large part by technological

transmission, the spread of technology across borders. Although the Philippines is
not the world's least technologically advanced country, it is far from leading. It ranks
83rd out of 138 countries in terms of technological readiness, according to the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

6. Ecological Globalization occurs when ecosystems are constantly exchanging

materials through the movement of air in the atmosphere, the flow of water in rivers
and the migration of animals across the landscape. The world is also becoming
highly interconnected through the movement of people and the transport of goods
locally to globally (EurekAlert.com).

7. Geographical Globalization is defined as the set of processes (economic,

social, cultural, technological, and institutional that contributes to the relationship
between societies and individuals around the world. It is a progressive process by
which exchanges and flows between different parts of the world are intensified.

Positive effects of globalization

1. Gives Access to a Larger Market

Through globalization countries and companies have access to a bigger consumer
base. Instead of only selling products in their country a business can expand to
other regions boosting sales and in the process making more money.

2. Provides Cheaper Goods for Consumers

Because of globalization a lot of companies are moving to areas where their cost
of production is low, they, in turn, offer cheaper products because they are not
expensive to make hence lower prices for consumers.

ix
9/26/2021

3. Globalization Wets Countries do what They do Best

For example, a country can buy cheap steel from another country instead of
making its own steel. They can then focus their efforts on making other things they
are good at like computers and export them to the countries they import cheap
steal from.

4. Leads to Better Economies

With many multi nation’s heading to Africa to tap the consumer base in this part of
the world more jobs are being created helping people in these countries get better
wages and improve their stands of living. This investments by these multinationals
or foreign countries also help strengthen the economies of these countries with the
foreign exchange they bring in. With an increased number of investors looking for
investment’s opportunities around the globe, country economies will benefit
wherever they invest. Through globalization economies of different
countries are becoming more connected to one another since they depend on
each other for trade.

5. Promotes World Peace and Unity

Globalization brings governments together so that they can tackle common goals
together. For example, due to globalization world leaders have seen the impact of
pollution and have resolved to tackle climate change together. Also, it is unlikely
that a country trading a lot of products and services with another will attack it or
want to go to war with it.

6. Innovation
The desire to make a profit has always been a spur to expanded trade, innovation,
and the communication of ideas. The great ideas from leaders spread more easily.

7. Better Quality and Variety

Competition from different countries drives firms to improve their products.
Consumers have better quality products and more variety as a result

Negative effects of globalization

1. Delocalization
This covers the decreasing face-to-face encounter both for local and international
transactions. Telephone, mobile phone, e-mail, and video chat have substituted for
the physical interactions of people, diminishing the opportunity to establish closer
and improved relations through personal encounters. It creates a sense of
detachment and a different perception of community in the individual.

x
9/26/2021

2. Decrease in the power of national government

Globalization is perceived to have shrunk the power of national government due to
the internationalization of financial markets, technology, and services which tend
to constraint the national governments freedom of action.

3. Rise of the MNCs

Considered as the forerunners of globalization, MNCs establish their branches in
countries with cheaper raw materials and workforce. They provide employment but
offers salaries lower than what they give in their mother countries. Their use of
local materials contributes the rapid depletion of the host country’s natural
resources and their deterioration of the environment.

4. Social Inequality
Unregulated capitalism led to the unbalanced economic development of some
regions

Interconnections of People and Nations

Globalization leads to interconnectedness of people and nations, where

people refer to a group of people with commonality, such as religion, culture and
language who lives in a specific area, while nation refers to a larger group of people
organized in a specific place, which embodied an independent government of its
country where they can decide on their own.

Try to imagine how can we connect to our loved ones especially in this time of
pandemic without technologies? Cell phones connect people all over the world like
never before. There are a multitude of platforms through which people can
communicate too, including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and
Snapchat.

Considering the new normal education, how can we enroll in our online
educational programs in school from anywhere in the Philippines without the
different platforms and access new information on virtual topics?

Collaboration means to work together with others to achieve a common goal.

Unconditionally sharing everything and helping each other while mutually working
together in cohesive “collective” in unusual roles embracing talents of each person
to synergize or invent something new in a way that: a. benefits all the groups, b.
serves the whole team’s goal, and c. may result to creative innovation.

Cooperation is the process of working together to the same end. It is an active

help from a person, organization etc. such as an orderly sharing of space and
resources. Cooperation means conditionally sharing information and resources

xi

while functioning together within an independent “connective” in typical roles with

workloads accepted as unequal to change something in a way that: a. benefits
some individuals in a group, b. meets their personal needs, and c. may result in
disrupted innovation.
