A. Tick the correct answer.
1. Which of the following is an example of a class I lever?
a. Slide
b. Wheelbarrow
c. Crowbar
d. Screw
Ans: c. Crowbar
2. Which of the following is an example of a wedge?
a. Screw
b. Tweezers
c. Tongs
d. Knife
Ans: d. Knife
3. Which of the following is an example of a class II lever?
a. Fishing rod
b. Nutcracker
c. Scissors
d. Flag pole
Ans: b. Nutcracker
4. What is the concept on which the jack used by a person to lift car works?
a. Screw
b. Wedge
c. Lever
d. Pulley
Ans: a. Screw
5. Which of the following is an example of a class III lever?
a. Fishing rod
b. Nutcrackers
c. Scissors
d. Flag pole
Ans: a. Fishing rod
B. Fill in the blanks.
1. The human arm is an example of a class III lever.
2. A pulley has a wheel with a groove for the rope or chain to move over it.
3. Wedge are used to cut hard surfaces.
4. A screw is a simple machine which looks like a nail with grooves on it.
5. An inclined plane is simply a slope over which a load can be pushed up or down.
C. Complete the table by naming the simple machine used to do each type of work and also its type
or class.
S.No Work performed Name Type of Simple
Machine
1 To cut cloth Scissors Class I
2 To move a load up Pulley Class I
3 To break a nut Nutcracker Class II
4 To open a door Wheel and Axie --------
5 To cut a piece of wood Screw --------
D. Give reasons for the following statements.
1. A knife can cut an apple, but a screw cannot.
Ans: A knife has a sharp edge used to cut an apple while a screw does not have any sharp edge.
Rather, the spiral on the screw helps to thread it into the objects such as wood or concrete wall.
2. A see-saw is a class I lever while a tweezer is a class III lever.
Ans: A see-saw is a class I lever as its fulcrum is located between the load and the effort. While a
tweezer is a Class III lever as the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load.
E. Answer the following questions in one word.
1. Give two examples of a wheel and axle arrangement.
Ans: An egg beater and a steering wheel
2. What is the function of a wedge?
Ans: A wedge is used to cut through things.
3. What is a simple machine?
Ans: A machine with few moving parts is called a simple machine.
4. Where is screw used?
Ans: A screw is used to hang pictures on a wall or to lift a car.
F. Answer the following questions in brief.
1. How are a screw and an inclined plane related?
Ans: A screw is actually a modified inclined plane wrapped around its pole. It has a groove at its
head for a screwdriver to fit in it easily.
2. Differentiate between a fixed and a movable pulley.
Ans: A fixed pulley has a wheel fixed at a place and the rope moves in the grooved rim of the wheel.
It changes the direction of the applied force.
On the other hand, the wheel is not fixed in a movable pulley. It is free and movable. The load is
directly attached to the pulley.
3. Why a sewing machine is called a complex machine?
Ans: A sewing machine is called a complex machine as it is made up of two or more simple
machines.
4. Write a short note on the inclined plane.
Ans: An inclined plane is a slope or a titled surface used to move heavy loads up and down. It
changes the direction of the force applied and reduces the effort needed to do the work.
Ramps in schools, hospitals and malls and slides in playground are examples of inclined planes.
G. Answer the following questions in details.
1. What is a lever? Give two examples of each type of lever.
Ans: A lever is a simple machine that helps us to move or lift a heavy object by using less force.
Class I: a crowbar, pliers
Class II: a nutcracker, a nail clipper
Class III: a shovel, a fishing rod
2. How is water lifted up from a well? Explain the whole process.
Ans: The water is lifted up from a well using the pulley method. A pulley has a wheel with a groove
and a rope, belt or a chain that moves over the groove of the wheel to lift the water up from the
wall.
3. Raj wants to hang his art work, framed by his mother, on the wall of his room. Which simple
machine should he use to do the work? A nail or a screw? Why?
Ans: Raj should use a screw to hang picture frame on the wall as the spiral of the screw threads it
into a concrete wall.
