Each scholarship is described below. Some scholarships are need-based, others are not. If in doubt, apply! Return
all completed Rye High School Scholarship Applications to Mrs. Zapakin in the Counseling Office no later than Friday,
March 31st at 3:00 pm. Late applications will NOT be accepted. Please follow all directions on page 8 of this packet.
Senior Recognition Night

PARENTS’ ORGANIZATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Number of awards varies. All seniors are encouraged to apply. Scholarships will be awarded by the Parents’ Organization with
consideration of financial need.
PORT CHESTER TEACHERS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
This scholarship will be awarded to a student expressing interest in the field of education who is recognized for his/her
contributions to Rye High School.
WOMAN'S CLUB OF RYE
Two scholarships are given: one to a boy and one to a girl. Applicants should have financial need, exhibit academic achievement
and promise, demonstrate capabilities of leadership and responsibility, and participate in community service and meaningful
extracurricular activities.
WOMAN’S CLUB OF RYE – CHILDREN’S PHILANTHROPY SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants should be high school seniors who, through their efforts, exemplify the mission of the Woman’s Club, “In essential
things unity, in doubtful things tolerance, in all things, charity.” Applicants must be a Rye resident and demonstrate a genuine
caring for the less fortunate children in our community by working directly with them and making a difference in their everyday
lives. Résumé and essay directly related to their service to the community must be submitted. Financial need is a consideration.
E.A.G.L.E. AWARD
A student will be chosen who has demonstrated commendable effort and success in overcoming and/or compensating for his/her
learning difference. This scholarship will benefit the student as they pursue future aspirations in college or in the pursuit of a
career. To apply, applicants must complete an essay describing how they have overcome or compensated for their learning
differences.
THE YEDOWITZ – McGEE TRACK SCHOLARSHIPS
Up to two scholarships awarded to students most representing the spirit of the Rye Track program in terms of academic, “track”
record, and dedication; selected by the coaches.
RYE YOUTH SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to one male and one female who have made a significant impact on the Rye community through their participation in
soccer. Criteria includes participation on Rye Youth Soccer travel teams, community service at youth camps, refereeing youth
games, playing or managing at the JV or Varsity level, and/or other involvement in the Rye soccer community. Please submit a
brief essay (approx. 250 words) describing the impact you have made on the Rye community through your involvement in
soccer.
RYE GIRLS SPORTS, INC.
Awarded to a senior who has participated in the Rye Girls Softball program.
THE JOHN NUGENT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Presented by the Rye Football Association, this scholarship recognizes a senior who is a scholar-athlete, a leader, and who serves
as an example to others on and off the field. Community service may be considered.

THE BEN BEDINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Sponsored by the Rye Football Association, this scholarship is presented to an athletic leader, a role model and someone who
demonstrates good citizenship both on and off the field.
THE RONALD SASSONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a student demonstrating a passion for music. Music participation will be a deciding factor. Financial need will also
be considered.
THE CLASS OF 2008 MICHAEL DEVITO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of a graduate of the Class of 2008, this scholarship is awarded to a senior who best exemplifies Michael’s qualities of
leadership and compassion, someone who reaches out to all in their class, and who is known for always making others laugh and
smile. An additional essay of approx. 250 words is required, describing how you exemplify these ideals.
GEORGE P. THOMAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
George Thomas was a graduate of the Class of 1948 of Rye High School and a life-long resident of Rye who cared deeply for his
community and its schools. This scholarship will be awarded to a scholar/athlete who displays the same pride and dedication to
Rye High School and its surrounding community.
THE EMILY JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Rye Historical Society is providing this scholarship to a senior who demonstrates a devotion to community service and who
has a love of history.
RYE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Rye Historical Society is providing two scholarships to students with a love of history. The scholarship essay prompt
question is: “Why does history matter today?”
ELEANOR LEVENSON AWARD
Awarded to an individual who is respected by the school community for integrity and motivation, good moral character, effort to
realize their fullest potential, community service and shows evidence of leadership. This award is not based on financial need or
outstanding scholarship.
ROBERT C. HILL MEMORIAL AWARD
Award is presented to the child of a member of the Rye Teachers Association or to a deserving student evaluated on scholarship,
leadership, and merit.
THE PATTI CAPONERA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of a Rye Middle School Math teacher, this award is given to a student who has a love and appreciation of Mathematics,
a great sense of humor and, most importantly, displays support and respect for peers and community.
RYE ROTARY – VARIOUS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Number and amounts vary. Awarded to graduating seniors who, in the opinion of the Rye Rotary Foundation’s Scholarship
committee, have met to an outstanding degree, the criteria of community service, academic achievement and extracurricular
involvement. Financial need must be a consideration.
THE CARROLL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Christ’s Church of Rye awards a one-time scholarship to a Rye High School Senior with a devotion to community
service, an openness to people from all walks of life, and a demonstrated financial need. Financial need must be
addressed in a written essay.
THE PETER BISHOP SCHOLARSHIP FUND AWARD
Number and amount vary. Academic promise and consideration of need. For further information, contact the Rye Presbyterian
Church.
M&G HENDERSON AWARD
Number and amount vary. Awarded to students with a strong academic record, promise, and consideration of need.

DAVID E. RETIK/CHRISTOPHER D. MELLO FOUNDATION AWARD
The Christopher D. Mello Scholarship is awarded by the Foundation, established in memory of a beloved member of the Rye
Community, and a 1994 graduate of Rye High School, who tragically lost his life on September 11, 2001. The scholarship will
be awarded to a student who has earned the respect of faculty and fellow students and has demonstrated a contribution to the
school community, academic improvement through hard work, and involvement in extracurricular activities.
DEANE H. FLOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a senior who best demonstrates love for Rye High School through leadership and creative problem-solving abilities.
The recipient must display continued respect for the dignity and worth of people within the Rye High community, as well as the
world at large–someone who has demonstrated the belief that a high school student can make a difference in the world.
WOOF HANEMAN/RYE YMCA SCHOLARSHIP
This one-year scholarship will be awarded to a member of the senior class who meets the following criteria: exhibits a strong
effort in the classroom; is involved with the Rye YMCA (active member, volunteer, or working as a staff member); demonstrates
active and positive involvement in school activities and/or the broader community. The applicant must provide a separate essay
(250 words or less) that describes their Rye Y experience and what it has meant to them.
DICK MURDOCH LEGACY AWARD: The Reverend Richard Murdoch (Rye Presbyterian Church) was dedicated to the
youth of Rye. This award recognizes a senior who has integrated Dr. Murdoch’s legacy into service to the school and community
by working to become better at whatever they choose to do, showing a steady vision for the future, and remaining open to new
opportunities and experiences. NOTE: the Rye Youth Council will present this award.
FEFFI STIASSNI MEMORIAL AWARD: This award was established in honor of Feffi, a highly creative Rye student who
used her outstanding energy and positive approach to life to help others. It is presented to a senior who has demonstrated
exceptional creativity and caring for others. To apply, the applicant must complete a separate essay describing their involvement
in an activity, which has enhanced their self-worth. NOTE: the Rye Youth Council will present this award.
KARENA SOMERVILLE AWARD: Karena was a 1964 graduate of Rye High School who later worked in the field of
communications and was very active in community service. The scholarship will be given to a student who has demonstrated a
commitment to the field of communications and community service. To apply, write a short paragraph on future plans in this
field during college and after college. NOTE: the Rye Youth Council will present this award.
RYE YOUTH COUNCIL AWARD: This award is presented to a high school senior who has internalized the RYC motto,
“character matters”, and who has made significant contributions to the Rye Youth Council and to the community throughout his
or her high school career. NOTE: the Rye Youth Council will present this award.
SENIORS4SENIORS AWARD: Sponsored by The Osborn, this award is presented to a high school senior who has made a
significant contribution to intergenerational programming in our community. Applicants are asked to include a brief statement
about their intergenerational experiences. NOTE: the Rye Youth Council will present this award.
SUZANNE C. MURPHY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: This award recognizes a senior who has courageously
accepted personal challenges and used his/her inner strength to graciously move forward. The development of personal character
has led the recipient to the service of others. The recipient understands the art of listening, and recognizes and encourages that
potential in others. Write a brief statement on why you meet the criteria for this award. Students can apply or be nominated.
NOTE: the Rye Youth Council will present this award.
THE STEVEN MULVEY ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Sponsored by the Rye Police Benevolent Association and Mrs. Steven Mulvey. To be awarded to students participating in football,
baseball, and to a female golfer. Write an essay reflecting why your participation in this sport has been a meaningful experience
during your high school career. Describe your “zest for life,” and how you are a good teammate and bring positivity to those
around you.
WALTER WORTHINGTON JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to graduating seniors based on need. Students must be 2022 graduating class of a secondary school. Applicants must
write an essay about their ability to help those in need. For example, how you have stood up to prevent bullying, better the Rye
Community or committed a selfless act of kindness.

THE CHURCH OF RESURRECTION LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
A student will be chosen for this $2000 scholarship highlighting his/her unselfish leadership in the Rye community. Students are
required to write an essay explaining how they have been able to give back to the community as a leader encouraging others to
model citizenship.
THE STANLEY LABER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Stan Laber was a retired teacher and worked in the Rye City SD for over ten years at both the High School and Midland School
as a computer aide. He was an accomplished musician and singer-songwriter. Stan lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease in
August 2019. Carmela and Stan’s daughter graduated from RHS in June of 2019. The Stanley Laber Memorial Scholarship is
awarded to a student demonstrating how his/her passion for music has changed his/her life and possibly the lives of others. An
essay describing the student’s interest and involvement in music is required.
THE NATURE ACCESS COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Awarded to a student who has pursued a service project or an innovative solution to address the intersection of social and
environmental justice issues in Westchester County. The recipient may have demonstrated this by addressing an environmental,
conservation, and/or sustainability challenge in an underserved Westchester community.
THE EDITH READ FOUNDRESS AWARD
In honor of the founder of the Rye Nature Center, Edith Read, this scholarship is presented to a student who has demonstrated a
commitment and passion for the conservation of resources within Rye. This commitment and passion could be shown through the
creation of, or substantial work on, a project to advance conservation awareness, a commitment to sustained volunteer work at a
local environmental/conservation facility or institution, or other extensive efforts to protect the resources of our community.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FUTURES AWARD
Awarded to a student who has demonstrated an interest in environmental science, ecological research, and/or environmental
education. The recipient may have shown this through a long-term research project, an investment of time in educating others
about nature, or an intention to pursue academic studies in a field related to the natural sciences.
THE CHARLIE NORTHSHIELD AWARD
Charlie Northshield was a beloved member of the Rye High School faculty from 1974 to 2007. The Charlie Northshield Memorial
Award will be granted to a graduating senior interested in pursuing a career in building, design, technology,
the skilled trades, or the military. Applicants are asked to provide a brief statement describing their post-graduation plans.
RYE PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a son or daughter (grandchild/niece/nephew) may be considered) of an IAFF member (current or
retired). Child of a police officer or DPW may also be considered. Applicants must provide a 500-word essay describing the
importance of civil service in our communities. Community service, academic achievement and need are considered.
AMERICAN LEGION, ED EMPSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is available to Rye High School seniors who have a military veteran as a member of their immediate or extended
family. The scholarship is intended for a student who wishes to pursue a career in a skilled trade, such as medical technician,
culinary arts, automotive mechanic, electrician or plumber. The student is asked to write an essay of no more than 250 words
describing their interest in their chosen vocational field and their plans upon completing their studies. Copies of the students’
academic transcript and their resume are also required.
RYE GARNETS ICE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to an ice hockey player who demonstrates good character and achievement on and off the ice. A short
essay is required: Please explain how the Rye Hockey culture has had a positive impact in your life and how you exemplify its
qualities of honor, integrity, trustworthiness, respect, commitment, and teamwork. .

In some cases, where noted, the application must be mailed directly to the sponsor.
AGATHA DURLAND SCHOLARSHIPS: GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP: (Anyone applying for the General Scholarship will
also be considered for the following Byron Hawkins Special Award) Number and amounts vary. Applicants are secondary school
seniors who intend to pursue college studies in health, medical, and allied science fields, including psychology, physical therapy,
and environmental science. Students must have demonstrated academic achievement and commitment to science studies as well
as extra-curricular motivation. Financial need is a consideration but not a requirement. Recipients are afforded the ability to re-
apply for continued assistance from ADF each of the following years of undergraduate studies as long as they meet requirements
that demonstrate to ADF their continued involvement in the science fields.
BYRON HAWKINS SPECIAL MEMORIAL AWARD SCHOLARSHIP: (Students must apply for the Agatha Durland
Scholarship to be automatically considered for this Byron Hawkins Special Memorial Award.) This scholarship is awarded to
one outstanding student among those considered for the ADF General Scholarship who strongly exhibits the characteristics Mr.
Hawkins did throughout his life - generosity, honesty, humility, and loyalty - who plans to enter a health-related field that will
serve to better the community mentally, physically, or socially in a tangible way. Financial need is a consideration but not a
requirement. Scholarship is $3000, with the ability of the recipient to re-apply for assistance up to $2,500 each of the remaining
years of undergraduate education. Consideration will also be given for 5-year programs.
MARY FRIESE LOWE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Multiple scholarships are awarded annually. They are renewable yearly, but a new application, which is available through Mr.
Barber’s office, must be filed each year. Contact Richard J. Barber, 24 Haven Avenue, Rye, NY (914-967-3040) for inquiries.
The completed application must be mailed to Mr. Barber at the above address by April 7, 2023
THE GAIL HARRISON ROMAN / RYE ARTS CENTER AWARD
This $500 award is for a high school senior who has demonstrated a passion and commitment to excellence in the creative arts at
school or in the community and for whom the creative arts contributed to his/her educational experience (includes visual, digital,
performing, literary, instrumental and/or vocal music, photography, film, dance, and/or design).
RYE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHOLARSHIP
Applicant must be a Rye student who has been employed by a member of the Rye Chamber of Commerce or a Rye non-profit
organization for at least sixty hours in the past calendar year. Students will need a letter of recommendation from their
supervisor. The student must write a one-page essay describing what their work has meant to them and what their plans are for
the future.
THE LITTLE GARDEN CLUB OF RYE SCHOLARSHIP
The Little Garden Club of Rye Scholarship is presented to a student who has demonstrated a commitment and passion for
environmental science, horticulture or sustainability and conservation of resources within Rye. This commitment and passion
could be shown through substantial work on a project related to these areas of interest or a commitment to sustained volunteer
work at a local facility or institution to protect the resources of our community.
