A dictionary is an alphabetical listing of words. An entry word a word in boldface that is


being explained in a dictionary.

cascade (kas-kād’), v.t. fall or drop as a small steep waterfall


A dictionary is divided in to three parts. A beginning, middle and end.

1. Beginning of dictionary is letters A –H


2. Middle of the dictionary is letters G-L
3. End of dictionary is letters M- Z

To alphabetize a list of words or names, you start by placing them in A-B-C order according
to the first letter of each word
If you have two or more words that begin with the same letter, you will look at the second
letter. Ask yourself: “which of the second letters comes first in the alphabet?” If the first and
second letters are the same proceed to the third letters.

A thesaurus is a book that gives the synonyms and antonyms of a word.

Aside from synonyms and antonyms, a thesaurus also gives meaning and part of speech of a
word. Take this as an example.

Direction: List words in alphabetical order. Write words in each group of lines beside them.
Remember that sometimes you must look at the third or fourth letters in words to alphabetize them
correctly.
