DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS V

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the pupils are expected to:
a. Derive the formula in finding the area of a rectangle.
b. Find the area of a rectangle.
c. Illustrate the area of a rectangle given.
d. Show the value of cooperation.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

TOPIC: Finding the Area of a Rectangle
REFERENCE: Mathematics for Everyday Use, Pages 170-179
MATERIALS: Puzzle, Visual aids, Dice, Chalkboard, Small White board,
White board marker, Power Point Presentation.

III. LEARNING PROCEDURES

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Daily Routine
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

Class, let’s start our day with a prayer. Let’s bow Lord, thank you for this beautiful morning
our heads and feel the presence of God. that we are alive and healthy, thank you for
guiding us in our everyday life, we pray to
you our Lord to guide us in the right way
and make us safe from harm. In Jesus name
we pray Amen.
Good Morning Class!

Before you take your seat make sure that your

chairs are properly arranged.
Who’s not around today in Group 1? How about in None Ma’am
Group 2?

Before we start let’s sing a song, you know the Square and circle (2x)
song Square and Circle? Triangle (2x) Rectangle and Oblong (2x)
Let’s Sing! Diamond (2x)
2. Drill (Mental Game Computation)

Today we will have a game, I will group you into 2

groups. Boys Vs. Girls. I will show you a
mathematical equation and you just multiply what
is shown without the use of pen and paper. Raise
the flag if you want to answer. The group with the
highest score wins the game.

But before we start do still remember what I

always tell you when you are working as a group Every time we work as a group or team we
or team? cooperate and have unity.

Example:
9x 2 = 18 3 x 9 = 27
7x 3 = 21 6 x 4 = 24
8 x 5= 40 4 x 3 = 12

3. Review
Now Class, let us recall our lesson yesterday. What It’s about area!
is it all about?

What is area? Area is a space occupied by a shape.

Area is a space occupied by a shape.
Very Good! Will you please repeat what is area?
To find it’s area we need to find how many
How do find the area of a square? square units can fit in a square or simply
multiply it side by side.
The formula in finding the area of a square
is A=S x S.
Very Good! And what is the formula in finding the
area of a square? Unit square - is a square where each side is
equal to 1 unit.
What is a unit square?

Let’s answer these examples before we proceed to

our next lesson. A= S x S
A=5cm x 5cm
1.) 5cm x 5cm = A= 25 sq. cm
2.) 6inch x 6inch =
3.) 3m x 3m =
4.) 2m x 2m=
5.) 4cm x 4 cm=

4. Motivation (Puzzle Game)

Yes ma’am.
Now class I have here a painting I want to decorate
it at home but it is in puzzle form, can you help me
fix it?
B. Lesson Proper
1.Presentation of the Lesson Its shape is rectangle!

Class, what shape did we create after fixing the

painting? Because it has two parallel lines.
It has four right angles, and it has length
Why did you say that it is a rectangle? and width.
Good! What else?

Very Good! It shape is rectangle because it has 2

pair of parallel lines it has 4 right angles and it has
length and width.

Now I can put the painting in my house, but I need

to find the area of a rectangle first for me to know Yes ma’am!
how many square units does it occupy. Can you
help me find it?
It has 5-unit square on its length.
2.Discussion
Will you count the number of unit square it has on
its length? It has 3unit square on its width.
It has 15unit square in all.
Very good! How about on its width?
Now how many square units it has in all?
Very good! That’s one way of finding the area of By multiplying the length which is 5 and
a rectangle by counting its square unit. the width which is 3 . 5 x 3=15.
What else? How did you get 15?
Very Good! Therefore, we find the area of a
rectangle by multiplying the length and the width.

Again, how do we find the area of a rectangle? We find the area of a rectangle by
multiplying the length and the width.

In that case what do you think is the formula in The formula in finding the area of a
finding the area of a rectangle? rectangle is A=L x W.
Very Good! Will you please repeat what is the
formula in finding the area of a rectangle? The formula in finding the area of a
rectangle is A=L x W.
Very good! What is the first step in solving for the
area?
First, Write the formula A= L x W
Then what is the next step.?
What is the last step? Substitute the length and the width which
is A= 5 x 3
Very good then don’t forget to write the unit of Solve for the area. A=15 sq.mm
measure like what we do in solving the area of a
square. For example, Sq. cm, Sq. m, Sq mm.
Again, Write the Formula, Substitute and then
solve.

Here are another examples, using

(Pick A Door Game) try to solve the
following on your notebook.

1. 9cm x 4 cm=
2. 7mm x 3 mm=
3. 8 cmx 5 cm=
4. 10inch x5 inch=
5. 7m x 5 m=

Is that clear?
Any questions?

Yes ma’am!
None ma’am!

3.Fixing skills (Group Activity Dice Game)

I have here a dice each face has a problem in

solving the area of a rectangle using your white
board and marker solve and illustrate your answer.
I will group you again into 2 groups, Group 1 are
boys and group 2 are girls. Raise your board if
you’re done so I will call you the group with the
highest score wins the game.

Is the direction clear class?

C. Generalization
How do we find the area of a rectangle?

Yes ma’am!
Again, how do we find the area of a rectangle?
We find the area of a rectangle by
What is the formula in finding the area of a multiplying the length and the width.
rectangle?
We find the area of a rectangle by
multiplying the length and the width.
D. Application The formula in finding the area of a
Now class using your white board and marker, I rectangle is A=L x W
want you to find the area of a rectangle given in
the problem I will give easy, average and hard
questions solve and illustrate your answer I will
give you 2 minutes per question.

Example
Find the area of a rectangle with a length of 10 cm
and a width of 2 cm?
A=L x W
A=10cm x 2cm
A=20 sq. cm

Illustration:

Solve the following:

(Easy)
1. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of
6cm and a width of 2cm.
2. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of
8cm and a width of 2cm.

(Average)
1. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of
10cm and a width of 2cm

2. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of

12cm and a width of 5cm

(Hard)
1. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of
10m and a width of 8m

2. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of

11cm and a width of 10cm

IV. Evaluation
I. Directions: Find the area of the rectangle
given. I Will give you 5 minutes.

1.
2.

3.

4.

5.

II. Directions: Solve the following.

1. L= 35inch W= 15inch
2. L=15m W=5m
3. L= 10 cm W=6cm
4. L=16m W= 3m
5. L=36m W=6m

V. Assignment
Direction: Solve for the area of a rectangle
given in the problem.

1. Luke buys a cabinet whose length is 30m

and 11m on its width. What is the area of a
cabinet?

2. If a rectangular garden has a length of 250m

and a width of 150m, what is its area?
