Spiritual Strongholds & Deliverance

July 30, 2011

Part 1
The Spiritual Landscape
Jesus Cast Out Spirits and Healed
α “Now when Jesus had come into Peter's house, He saw his wife's
mother lying sick with a fever. So He touched her hand, and the
fever left her. And she arose and served them. When evening had
come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed.
And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were
sick” (Matthew 8:14-16).
Power Over Spirits and Sickness
α “And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave
them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all
kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (Matthew 10:1).

α “There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And

there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who
works all in all” (1 Corinthians 12:5-6).

α “To [one] gifts of healings by the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians

12:9).
Principalities, Powers and Rulers
α “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly
places” (Ephesians 6:12).

α “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed
is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41).

α “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of
God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them,
because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Satan’s Army

nations.
2. Powers–Demons that have delegated authority to operate in
governmental centers.
3. Rulers of Darkness–Demons that seize and take hold of
governments.

deal with on a daily basis.

Spiritual Strongholds
1. A spiritual stronghold is a fortress resulting from wrong thinking
or beliefs that have taken root in an area of your life.

2. The stronghold can be purely mental or emotional in that only

you are aware of its presence, or it can present itself in a physical
sense, such as alcoholism or sexual perversion.

3. The core issue in both of these manifestations is your thought

life.

There is a Spirit Attached
ℵ“As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with
the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as
iron does not mix with clay” (Daniel 2:43).

α “And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity

eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise
herself up” (Luke 13:11).

Bringing Down Strongholds
ℵ“A wise man scales the city of the mighty, and brings down the
trusted stronghold” (Proverbs 21:22).
Deliverance
1. The war is in the mind.
2. We are delivered by the power of the Holy Spirit through the
renewing of the mind.

3. Our body has been crucified with Christ and we have become a
new creation in Him.

4. We need to turn all our thoughts towards God and develop a

heart of praise and worship.

The War is in the Mind
α “For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of
my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is
in my members” (Romans 7:22-23)
Part 2
Overcoming
Truth for a Lie
α “Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of
their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who
exchanged the truth of God for the lie” (Romans 1:24-25).

α “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether
they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into
the world” (1 John 4:1).
Every Thought Captive to Christ
α “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the
flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty
in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments
and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of
God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of
Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
The Lord is My Rock
ℵ“And he said: The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my
deliverer; The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My
shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my
refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. I will call upon the
Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my
enemies” (2 Samuel 22:2-4).
Our Sins are Forgiven
ℵ“As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our
transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

ℵ“Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool” (Isaiah
1:18).

α “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in

Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but
according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:1).
The First Resurrection
α “Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection.
Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be
priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a
thousand years” (Revelation 20:6).
Adoption as Sons
α “Having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to
Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise
of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the
Beloved” (Ephesians 1:5-6).
Conveyed Into His Kingdom
α “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might
destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8).

α “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public

spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15).

α “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed

us into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Colossians 1:13).
Seated in Heavenly Places
α “Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together
with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up
together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ
Jesus” (Ephesians 2:5-6).
An Eternal Kingdom
ℵ“And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a
kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall
not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume
all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).
Crucified with Christ
α “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live
by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for
me” (Galatians 2:20).

α “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires” (Galatians 5:24).
Put off Your Former Conduct
ℵ“Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel: Because you despise
this word, And trust in oppression and perversity, And rely on
them, therefore this iniquity shall be to you Like a breach ready to
fall, A bulge in a high wall, Whose breaking comes suddenly, in an
instant” (Isaiah 30:12-13).
α “If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as
the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former
conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind”
(Ephesians 4:21-23).
Temped by Our Own Desires
α “Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God; for
God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt
anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his
own desires and enticed” (James 1:13-14).

α “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our

sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Submit to God
α “For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother
and sister and mother” (Matthew 12:50).

α Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in

heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

α “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from
you” (James 4:7).

ℵ“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as

iniquity and idolatry” (1 Samuel 15:23).
Train My Hands for War
ℵ“Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war,
And my fingers for battle” (Psalm 144:1).

α “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which
you were also called and have confessed the good confession in
the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12).

α “And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean,
followed Him on white horses” (Revelation 19:14).
Prayer and Supplication
α Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being
watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all
the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).
Prayer and Fasting
α “Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why could
we not cast it out? So Jesus said to them, Because of your
unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard
seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and
it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However,
this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew
17:19-21).
Praying and Anointing with Oil
α “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the
church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the
name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and
the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will
be forgiven” (James 5:14-15).
The Whole Armor of God
α “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of
His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able
to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11).
The Whole Armor of God
α “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put
on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet
with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the
shield of faithwith which you will be able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and
the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians
6:14-17).
The Word of God
α “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly
equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
The Word of Their Testimony
α “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the
word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the
death” (Revelation 12:11).

α “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because
fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made
perfect in love” (1 John 4:18).

α “And we have known and believed the love that God has for us.
God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in
him” (1 John 14:16).
Overcome Evil with Good
α “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”
(Romans 12:21).

α “But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in
return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the
Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil” (Luke
6:35).
To Him Who Overcomes

as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne”
(Revelation 3:21).

α “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God
and he shall be My son” (Revelation 21:7).

ℵ“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength”
(Nehemiah 8:10).

ℵ“Let the saints be joyful in glory; Let them sing aloud on their
beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-
edged sword in their hand” (Psalm 149:5-6).
