By John Ardent

I’m an old lady

And i don’t have long to live

Not to give no time left to give

I want to drink, I want to eat

I want my shoes taken off my feet

I want to talk but not to walk

Because if I walk, I have to know

Where it is I want to go
I want to sleep but not to dream

I want to play and win every game

To live with love but not to love

The world to move but me not move

I want i want for ever and ever

The world to work the world to be clever

Leave me be but don’t leave me alone

That’s what i want i’m big round stone

Sitting in the middle of a thunderstorm

There your are that’s true

Incorporating poetry into the classroom can be a powerful pedagogical practice, and the poem
"I'm an old, old lady" by John Ardent offers various strategies for doing so. Here are some
effective strategies for using poetry in language classes.
1.Determine what strategies can be applied?

Answer:

Incorporating poetry into the classroom can be a powerful pedagogical practice. According to
Collie and Slater (1999, p. 3-6) there are basically four reasons for language teachers to use
poetry in the classroom. These are valuable authentic materials, language enrichment, and
cultural enrichment. Beside that the poem "I'm an old, old lady" by John Ardent offers various
strategies for doing so:

A. Discussion and Interpretation: Begin by having a class discussion about the poem.
Encourage students to share their interpretations and emotional responses to the poem.
This helps build analytical and communication skills.
B. Analysis of Literary Elements: Teach students to analyze the poem's literary elements,
such as metaphors, symbolism, and structure. This enhances critical thinking and literary
analysis skills.
C. Creative Writing and Personal Reflection: After discussing the poem, have students write
their own poems or reflections on the theme of aging and desires. This encourages
creativity and self-expression.
D. Performance and Recitation: Encourage students to perform or recite the poem aloud.
This not only improves public speaking skills but also helps students engage more deeply
with the poem.
E. Empathy-Building Exercises: Engage in activities that encourage students to empathize
with the speaker of the poem, such as putting themselves in the speaker's shoes. This
promotes empathy and understanding.
F. Real-Life Connections: Relate the themes of the poem to real-life situations, personal
experiences, or the experiences of elderly individuals students may know. This helps
them see the relevance of the poem in their lives.
G. Assessment and Evaluation: Use assessments that require students to demonstrate their
understanding of the poem, whether through essays, presentations, or creative projects.
This helps evaluate their comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Incorporating poetry into the classroom is not only a means of improving language and
analytical skills but also a way to foster creativity, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the
complexities of human emotions and experiences. These strategies can help create a dynamic and
enriching learning experience for students.
