Coulomb Law

This document contains 10 numerical problems related to electrostatic forces between charged particles. The problems calculate things like the force of repulsion between ions based on their charge, the mutual repulsion between charged copper spheres and how that force compares to gravitational attraction, how contact between spheres affects their repulsion, and the position of a third charge needed to achieve force equilibrium between two other charges. The document provides the questions and answers for teachers or students to practice solving electrostatics problems.

PHYSICS CLASS 12TH Numerical Problems

1. The electrostatic force of repulsion between two positively charged ions carrying equal charges is
3.7 x 10-9 N, when they are separated by a distance of 5 . How many electrons are missing from each
ion ? [Ans. - 2]
2. (a). Two insulated charge copper sphere A and B have their centres separated by a distance of 50
cm. What is the mutual force of electrostatics repulsion if the charge on each is 6.5 x 10-7 C ? The radii
of A and B are negligible compared to the distance of separation. Also compare this force with their
mutual gravitational attraction if each weighs 0.5 kg. [Ans. - 1.5 x 10-2 N , 6.67 x 10-11 ]
(b). What is the force of repulsion if (i) each sphere is charged double the above amount, and the
distance between them is halved ; (ii) the two spheres are placed in water ? (Dielectric constant of
water = 80) [Ans. - 0.24 N , 1.9 x 10-4 N]
3. Suppose the spheres A and B in question 2 have identical sizes. A third sphere of the same size
but uncharged is brought in contact with the first , then brought in contact with the second, and
finally removed from both. What is the new force of repulsion between A and B ? [Ans. - 5.7 x 10-3 N]
4. Two identical charges, Q each , are kept at a distance r from each other. A third charge q is placed
on the line joining the above two charges such that all the three charges are in equilibrium. What is
the magnitude, sign and position of the charge q ? [Ans. - Q/4]
5. Two point charges of charge values Q and q are placed at distance x and x/2 respectively from a
third charge of charge value 4q, all charges being in the same straight line. Calculate the magnitude
and the nature of charge Q, such that the net force experienced by the charge q is zero. [Ans. - 4q]
6. Calculate the distance between two protons such that the electrical repulsive force between them
is equal to the weight of either. [Ans. - 1.18 cm]
7. Two identical metal spheres having equal and similar charge repel each other with a force of 103 N
when they are placed 10 cm apart in a medium of dielectric constant 5. Determine the charge on each
sphere. [Ans. - 23.9 x 10-6 C]
8. two identical metallic spheres , having unequal, opposite charge are placed at a distance 0.90 m
apart in air. After bringing them in contact with each other, they are again placed at the same
distance apart. Now the force of repulsion them is 0.025 N. Calculate the final charge on each of them.
[Ans. - 1.5 x 10-6 C]
9. A small brass sphere having a positive charge of 1.7 x 10-8 C is made to touch another sphere of the
same radius having a negative charge of 3.0 x 10-9 C. Find the force between them when they are
separated by a distance of 20 cm . What will be the force between when they are separated by a
distance of 20 cm. What will be the force between them when they are immersed in an oil of
dielectric constant 3 ? [Ans. - 1.1 x 10-5 N ; 0.367 x 10-5 N]
10. Two point electric charges of values q and 2q are kept at a distance d apart from each other in air.
A third charge Q is to be kept along the same line in such a way that the net force acting on q and 2q
is zero. Calculate the position of charge Q in terms of q and d.
[Ans. - At a distance of − d from charge q]
